Thetford as an area for young kids

Miles2003shark · 11/10/2021 13:15

Hello all, we are filming a property show for Channel 4 and have a young family with 3 young kids. 7, 5 and 2.
The buyers love the house but wanted to know a little bit about the area...is it good for young kids, types of things they could do with their kids, clubs etc. Any info would be amazing

Thanks Miles

Thetford itself is - dare I say it - a little bit shit. It does have a very decent leisure centre with a nice pool though, plus easy access to various forested areas. For shopping you have Bury St Edmunds nearby and that's pretty good. Schools aren't great at all, sadly.

ichundich · 11/10/2021 13:39

Is this the standard of journalism now?

Bagelsandbrie · 11/10/2021 13:44

Thetford is rough. We live 18 miles away from it and visit it for High Lodge, the McDonald’s and the garden centre. I would not want to live there - my dh used to. It’s a bit like a country version of the roughest bits of South London (I used to live in South London).

ProfYaffle · 11/10/2021 13:52

Hmm. Thetford's a real mix - Ancient House museum is good, has a kids club and great links with the Sikh community, the Priory ruins are nice, riverside area especially with Bush Adventures paddleboarding from there is great, good open water swimming, walks in the surrounding areas etc

But yeah, my kids found Greggs in Thetford really scary when they were little!

FreeBritnee · 11/10/2021 14:00

I had no idea Thetford was rough!!

Some of us are happy livjng in S London 😉

But Thetford does suffer from rural deprivation, not great transport to other places etc.

Siriisatwat · 11/10/2021 14:38

It’s a shitty place.

I used to live a few miles away. We moved to West London when my ds was 8, he was far, far happier growing up in London.

Siriisatwat · 11/10/2021 14:40

Oh and Miles - come on, you are being fucking lazy. I worked in TV before I had kids, researcher and I did the leg work instead of asking on forums. Tut tut.

SummerHouse · 11/10/2021 14:46

So you are posting in a work capacity? The family are the buyers you are making a show about? I think you would be better asking people there now. It's got a bad rep, like Boston in Lincolnshire, but there are redeeming features. Thetford Forrest is a childs dream to grow up with on their doorstep. Centre Parcs a stone's throw away. Near to Norwich, excellent city.

TheMagiciansNiece · 11/10/2021 14:48

A lot of people from rough parts of London were rehoused there.

I live in Norfolk and wouldn't want to live in Thetford

zafferana · 11/10/2021 14:51

Do Kirsty and Phil know this is how you do research for their show @Miles2003shark???

It was a London overspill town but that was about 60 years ago I think?
JizzyJane · 11/10/2021 14:57

Thetford also has Long Stanton Spice Museum just up the road, its a great day out

is that you, Alan!?
terrifa · 11/10/2021 15:37

I'm from Norfolk, Thetford is rough as arseholes.

Siriisatwat · 11/10/2021 15:47

I can’t wait to see what Kirsty and Phill get from this.

“We have Peter and Hillary, looking to relocate with their three children to Thetford, which is rough arseholes”

MinnieMountain · 11/10/2021 16:26

It was rough when I worked there in 2004/5. Does that help?

Oh my, of had a mouthful of tea, it would be spat out.

So to summarise for Miles, research so far can be scripted as follows.

"This shit hole, part of a government resettlement plan for shady Londoners, boasts a great leisure centre, where families can unwind after a terrifying trip to the local Greggs."

😂😂

Yeah, this didn’t go well for Miles.

SummerHouse · 11/10/2021 19:35

Where is Miles?

Sleepyquest · 11/10/2021 19:37

Thetford is horrid lol. Bury St Edmunds isn't far though and that's lovely. There's also High Lodge which is nice, but other than that, I would not go to Thetford for anything else

CaveMum · 11/10/2021 19:44

I’m about 45 mins south of Thetford,. Only thing worth visiting in the area is High Lodge and Center Parcs!

VladmirsPoutine · 11/10/2021 19:46

Does mumsnet get a commission for this?
