I’m so excited about something I can’t sleep

Honestly I’m like a child (or me, to be fair…) at Christmas! It’s going to be a long month at this rate

Moved from London to Denmark just over a year ago. Moved alone and haven’t seen any friends or family in that time and due to covid/passport I haven’t been able to get back and I’ve been v v homesick.

Just booked flights to go back for a visit next month and I’m beside myself with excitement (mainly because I get to eat Greggs, cheese and onion crisps and good Indian food but suppose I’m a bit excited about friends and family)

I really hope anyone who has been away from their people gets to visit them soon! It’s been a suckfest of a year fir it! X

That is really exciting!

I have heard a lot about Greggs but have never been there. What would be the top 3 things there?

Does your family know you have booked flights?

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 01:34

Thank you for sharing my excitement Grin

Sausage roll, cheese and onion pasty and a sausage bean bake Grin

I’ve put quite a lot of thought into this!

My parents do (because I wanted to stay in their spare room!) but no one else does yet. Smile

Oh, that is exciting, OP! I hope you have the best time visiting home! Enjoy you sausage roll (and your family!)

Insert1x20p · 09/10/2021 03:05

Totally get your excitement.

I'm about to book flights to go back to UK next summer from HK. Have been in Hk for 550 days without leaving which is a LOOOOONG time to be stuck somewhere you can drive end to end in just over an hour Grin. Unfortunately will probably have to do 3 weeks hotel quarantine with the DC on my return but still worth it.

I watched all three series of Marcella just for the rainy London street scenes. Can't wait to get back and go to "big Tesco" (it's the little things) and not have to wear a mask outside.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 08:09

Thank you Grin I did finally get to sleep but woke up about 3h later excited again 😂

I have a list of foods I am excited to eat again when I come back which is probably what’s waking over my brain rather then friends and family…my parents are great but their no M&S blt sandwich, pack of cheese and onion crisps and bottle of Diet Coke (or a Chinese takeaway) Grin

Insert1x20p Hah! I couldn’t watch Marcella last month because it made me homesick 😂
Oh that’s so exciting!! Enjoy the big Tesco when you get back!

Narrows eyes suspiciously at OP.

Going back to the UK next week and looking forward to EXACTLY the same things, although slightly superceded by meeting my new grandchild and seeing my son for the first time in 18 months Grin

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 09:16

vajingleberry sure grandchild is cute and all but it’s no big Tesco Grin

(Congratulations! I’m Excited for you and your visit!)

@IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece

Wow - I can't believe you guessed their name. Big Tesco has a lovely ring to it - obvs Tessie for short Grin

ThePug · 09/10/2021 09:21

Can you not get Diet Coke in HK?!

TheChosenTwo · 09/10/2021 09:21

Op that’s so lovely and I’m excited for you! How many weeks/days to go before you can sink your teeth into some stodgy Greggs baked goods?! (I walk past one on my way to work every day and I’ve never tried anything from there!)
I would miss our food so much if I ever absconded Grin

Howshouldibehave · 09/10/2021 09:22

Missing the point here but can you not buy cheese and onion crisps in Denmark!?

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 09:24

vajingleberry beautiful name, hope the speed of the birth meant they were a Tesco express Grin

TheChosenTwo 38 days! I’m like a small child with excitement today Grin.

(Thank you to everyone sharing my joy!)

I'll join you guys in being excited, booked Italy tickets for half term - haven't been since early 2019. Can't wait to show off DS2 to my gran (he's 20m and she has never met him).

Might get to meet my cousins new baby too (she's due late October).

Food wise, I'm also excited about crisps Grin (Fonzies, an Italian cross between a twig let and a wotsit) and chinotto (a bitter Coke like fizzy drink)...and the pasta and pizza and coffee of course.

Hope everyone has lovely holidays Smile

vajingleberry · 09/10/2021 10:30

@ThePug @Howshouldibehave

I am in France not Denmark but no, it is almost impossible to find actual Diet Coke and has been for some time.

There is a kaleidoscopic range of crisp flavours, but Cheese and Onion is very rarely one of them! Lays Cheese and Onion are indistinguishable from Walkers, but it is very rare to come across them in a supermarket round here. If I do see them then I tend to buy in bulk.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 10:39

Yes, Diet Coke doesn’t exist here. Coke Zero is their coke of choice and you can occasionally get coke lite which is vaguely passable with a ton of ice but really tastes like crap!

And cheese and onion crisps just are not a thing, I found cheese and onion lays once which taste identical but never found them again! Salt and vinegar Pringles are also a rare find!

Camomila oh exciting! Enjoy your trip

You also can’t buy individual packets of any crisps so have to buy share size bags which doesn’t do well for the waistline!

Insert1x20p · 09/10/2021 12:27

Can you not get Diet Coke in HK?!

It's me that's in HK, and no, only Coke Zero since about a year or so ago. We always had "Coke Light" that was pretty much the same as Diet Coke (different sweetener though I think). Then they streamlined the range so it's fat coke or Coke Zero only. Sad days.

Insert1x20p · 09/10/2021 12:29

We have cheese and onion crisps but salt and vinegar hard to find. Bbq and Nacho cheese seem to be the mainstream choices here. Also "salted egg" which is kind of nice actually, in a weird kind of way

IhateBoswell · 09/10/2021 12:31

Aah sounds good, I'd be giddy too 👍🏻

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 13:37

Insert1x20p can’t say the idea of salted egg crisps is winning me over!

I think this is my favourite MN comment ever :-)

Enjoy your trip. Very jealous.

Thanks ZZ Grin

Ah bless ya OP Grin I've just booked flights to the UK for Christmas - haven't seen my family for two years and whilst I'm excited about seeing them I'm also secretly excited about going to Tesco and Primark 😉😂

vajingleberry · 09/10/2021 16:29

Breaking news! OH needed to go to the "big town" so I tagged along and am now the proud owner of no less than 8 giant bags of cheese and onion crisps.

I also acquired 3 bottles of Coke Light which I have never seen on the shelves before. I shall report back on whether it is acceptable.

My hand luggage to the UK will have the appropriate amount of space for proper tea bags and I will try not to cry about no longer being able to bring back bacon Sad

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 09/10/2021 16:35

PresidentJoey yay! Join me in the going home excitement!

Oh good work vajingleberry. Enjoy a crisp for me!!

Whereabouts in the world are you?

I miss proper bacon! (Danish bacon is rubbish! And don’t get me started on the atrocity that is sausages here!!).
I plan on bringing back tea bags, crisps, biscuits and cold and flu relief Grin
