So I went on holiday on my own…

A few weeks ago I posted about going on holiday on my own and how anxious I was and got some lovely support. Thought I’d update you - got home a few days ago and it was the best time ever. Airport was a breeze, no check-in hassle, got taxi to apartment and did nothing except what I wanted when I wanted. I didn’t eat out very often, preferring to have snacks on the balcony reading my kindle. And this might sound weird but how liberating not to have to wear clothes - naked sunbathing on the balcony! Not an option with teenagers. I found the whole experience quite erm arousing and wish I’d brought some ‘toys’… I am definitely doing this again.

bravo!
I went away on my own but only in the UK and fitted in some visits to friends as well. People looked at me like i was mad when I said I was doing it but what's better than being able to do whatever you want, when you want?!?

MinnieMountain · 08/10/2021 12:51

Nice one OP.

Where did you go? I need some solo ideas apart from walking.

Yogawankonobi · 08/10/2021 12:52

That’s sounds amazing! Well done

Cheeseandlobster · 08/10/2021 12:55

It's just so liberating! Good for you op. I did this last year and loved every second. I am due to do it again soon. Sadly I don't think the weather will be good enough for sunbathing but I am looking forward to just pleasing myself all week

Snailhaterz2 · 08/10/2021 13:00

Well done! I've just booked 4 days in Paris by myself in about 6 weeks. I'm spending a LOT of time planning what I'm going to do.

Yogawankonobi · 08/10/2021 13:08

@Snailhaterz2 that is my dream! Have you been before?

Snailhaterz2 · 08/10/2021 13:11

@Yogawankonobi Not for 20+ years. I've booked an airbnb studio, and have a guidebook - I can't wait!!

Peridot1 · 08/10/2021 13:14

I have just done the same. Without the nude sunbathing though.

Went to Greece. It was a busy resort I’d been to many times so I felt very comfortable there. Lots of time on the beach reading and just looking at the sea. Could easily have done another week.

MIL keeps asking did I really go on my own. Did I meet anyone. Her friends are amazed I went on my own. Would any of my sisters or friends not go with me. Keep having to point out that that would defeat the object of BEING ON MY OWN.

I was quite happy having lunch or dinner in the various restaurants. Had my kindle. Thought I’d have room service a few times but went down for dinner each night.

Loved it.

StormBaby · 08/10/2021 13:16

I did the same ten years ago, went to Spain alone, and I still carry that same wonderful zen feeling around with me now. It changed my life

Sidge · 08/10/2021 13:23

I’m on holiday alone right now!

Second time I’ve done this. It’s very relaxing and quite liberating. I spend my whole life pleasing everyone else and this is all about me for a change.

Friends say I’m brave but I see it as natural. As long as you plan it and are prepared it’s no braver than anything else.

No nude sunbathing for me though as I’m in a hotel!

I’m also planning to go to ‘live’ in New York on my own for a month.

Always wanted to live there but never did. Have been a few times and loved it but always go with someone who hasn’t been before so we do the same basic tourist stuff. So I said to DH I would like to go for a month and he said do it. So my plan is to book a serviced apartment or similar and go for 3 or 4 weeks. DH might then come and we will go somewhere for a week together. He’s been a few times on business so has no interest in NY itself.

I want to be able to really spend time doing museums, walking around areas and just taking my time rather than speeding around over a long weekend.

AuditAngel · 08/10/2021 13:42

I travelled to Greece alone, and am sharing a house with a friend/relative. Definitely enjoyed the solo travelling

What an amazing idea! I'd love to do that.

I've been to Prague on my own. It was just so nice to wander the streets on my own, just following my nose and stopping off for coffee and cake when ever I fancied it. Had a wonderful time.

MissAmbrosia · 08/10/2021 13:43

I'm planning a few days away at half term as dd is away on a course and dh is starting a new job. I can't wait. Planned some tourist type activities and noted a few nice restaurants. Peace and quiet!

LuvMyBoyz · 08/10/2021 14:28

I’ve booked 3 nights in a town 200 miles south of where I live to sightsee some places of interest (to me) at my own pace and to my heart’s content. Having huge fun planning and preparing. I’ve done day trips before but this is my first stop over. Can’t wait!

thereisonlyoneofme · 08/10/2021 14:40

I have had a few weekends in the Uk on my own but found it quite hard to fill the time somehow ! I always do a city break so there should be plenty to do. Not been brave enough to go abroad on my own yet!
I go to the theatre on my own and friends are amazed, Ive no one to go with so it Hobsons choice. Just been to see Only Fools and Horses musical.

onetwothreeadventure · 08/10/2021 14:43

I intend to do that too @Peridot1. I lived there for many years but it was always a blur of working, travel, socialising... I am hoping to rent an apartment for 2 months next year and just enjoy the city and eat all the great food!

This sounds amazing, would love to do this but probably wouldn't want to come back!
Imatwinmum · 08/10/2021 14:51

I wish I had the confidence to do this!

One day I hope.

When DD was 4 months old (she was undiagnosed CMPA), I ran away to a hotel for a night. Ordered room service, got into bed and read my book. It was amazing.

chocchipbrioche · 08/10/2021 14:55

I have been travelling by myself for the last 25 years. In my early 20's I went away on holidays with friends but they ended up irritating me and we had completely different ideas about what holidays are so ended up in arguments.
After that friends got married and had kids and finding myself single it was either sit at home and dream about going away or just do it. The first time was a little nerve racking but after that I found my stride and have been all over the world.
I love being able to get up in the morning and decide what to do that day, no hour long negotiations or planning around other people itineraries.
I love to keep myself to myself so lying by a pool with my book or touring around somewhere without having to keep up conversation with someone suits me well. Sometimes I sit and chat with people on holiday but mostly it's my time for peace and quiet and switch off from the world.
The only thing that bothers me a little is eating alone where I always feel I have a big red arrow above my head pointing out the solo traveller but I always have my book with me and it means I can eat at any restaurant I want.
I've had a few negative experiences and a few scary ones being a single woman traveller but in the whole it's been fab

EileenGC · 08/10/2021 15:04

I mostly travel alone, it’s bliss. No waiting around for others to find their passports or liquids at the airport. No waiting to order at restaurants or spend 30 min each morning debating what the plan for the day is. No arguing over who sleeps where and what time lights out should be. I set the pace of whatever I decide I’m doing.

I had a one week trip through Scandinavia planned, right after Covid hit, but I’m hoping I can do it summer 2022 or 2023. I can’t wait!

I sound super antisocial but this is to compensate for all the work trips I do which normally involve 200 of us travelling together for 2-3 weeks at a time, which tiring after a while. I love my colleagues but it becomes a bit much at times, so I make up for it with lots of solo trips Grin

Embracelife · 08/10/2021 15:09

Sounds wonderful

Badabingbadabum · 08/10/2021 15:11

I would adore a holiday on my own. Perhaps not a whole week but a long weekend in Italy. Sigh.

I have never been so jealous of any post I’ve read on here. Have an incredible time, this is going to be my escapist fantasy from now on!

That sounds amazing and I would love to do it one day. I would also love to hire a car and visit upstate NY, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough for the driving.
