So I went on holiday on my own…

A few weeks ago I posted about going on holiday on my own and how anxious I was and got some lovely support. Thought I’d update you - got home a few days ago and it was the best time ever. Airport was a breeze, no check-in hassle, got taxi to apartment and did nothing except what I wanted when I wanted. I didn’t eat out very often, preferring to have snacks on the balcony reading my kindle. And this might sound weird but how liberating not to have to wear clothes - naked sunbathing on the balcony! Not an option with teenagers. I found the whole experience quite erm arousing and wish I’d brought some ‘toys’… I am definitely doing this again.

@TheYearOfSmallThings

I’m thinking maybe next September for my trip and then if DH comes we can go drive to see the Fall colours.

Check the foliage maps - I think September might be too soon for the best colour. My parents were over in early October (they did an Oktoberfest and leaves boat trip) and they said the leaves were just starting to turn then.

We've been Sept a couple of times and it was roasting and it fall like at all. Your plan sounds wonderful.

I'd love to go on holiday on my own, not sure my OH would be so keen

CraftyBugger · 09/10/2021 20:01

So I may have booked a week in Majorca next June. Although I've done it before I still have a few nerves, this time I've booked a package which I'm feeling better about. Last time I booked a package and was always worried about the transfers not turning up and not having anyone around to ask for help if I needed it.

MsAnnFrope · 09/10/2021 20:06

God I’m jealous. I used to travel a lot for work and tag on exploring time before or after conferences. I need to do at least a weekend away on my own soon!

hairybakers · 09/10/2021 20:30

This thread has inspired me to start thinking about my big bday next year... I think a three day break to Lake Como at the mandarin Oriental may be calling my name!

PanicBuyingSprouts · 09/10/2021 20:48

I can remember that thread @Lucky44 and you saying that you were going to pull up your big girl’s pants and go. At no point did you mention throwing the pants away and going nude!

So pleased that you went and enjoyed it Smile

No need to blush, it sounds fabulous and I’m really please for you Smile

@MinnieMountain I went to Vienna on my own in December many moons ago, absolutely loved it. I went to get Christmassy and it didn't dissapoint as there are so many Christmas markets. I was on a proper budget and stayed in a hostel and got cheap standing opera tickets, ate a lot of pastry, saw lots of art and had a great time.

TheChosenTwo · 09/10/2021 21:16

Sounds wonderful (apart from the naked sunbathing, just not my jam but good for you!).
I love the idea of just disappearing off on my own for a couple of weeks, no one else to please, just wake up and start wandering.
Holidays with dh and the 3dc aren’t quite the same although usually relaxing but pleasing everyone gets quite tedious at times!

MinnieMountain · 09/10/2021 22:05

That’s just what I was hoping for @Mateypotatey. Think I’ll go in September though as I’m not a fan of snow. The opera is a good idea.

amusedbush · 09/10/2021 22:09

Sounds amazing! I took myself off to London (from Glasgow - not quite as exotic a trip Grin) for a weekend to see the Harry Potter play in spring 2019. It was my birthday, I was desperate to see it and my friends had either seen it or didn't care about it, and DH isn't a Potter fan. In the end DH was jealous of my jolly and ended up coming down with me anyway!

In November 2019 my work sent me to a conference in London so I went down early and spent the weekend there myself. I absolutely loved it - I pottered around Covent Garden, did a bit of shopping, ate a delicious Sunday roast at Hawksmoor by myself, streamed Netflix to the hotel TV from my phone and chilled out with cans of cocktails and Percy Pigs Grin

@CraftyBugger apply cream to your upper back using your right palm to left shoulder & vice versa, then put cream on the back of your right hand & apply cream to your left lower-mid back & vice versa

Apart from the potential for melanoma on the nips (am an Aussie and an overly-dramatic sun-dodger) it sounds divine! Especially the not bothering to cook, etc. I’m so sick of everyone else looking to me to keep them alive atm.

Sidge · 10/10/2021 10:30

@TeenMinusTests @poppym12 I stayed at the Melia Salinas in Costa Teguise. Thoroughly recommend it. Not a low budget option but worth it IMO. Great location right on the beach, amazing food, very clean, peaceful, no kids lol.

@Madcats the Canaries/Spain needed nothing going out if you’re double jabbed, passenger locator form before return to UK (a pain the bum but easy enough to do) and a PCR on day 2 after return. I booked with On The Beach who included a free PCR which I received before I went and just had to register, to do on return.

Every previous holiday has been with someone, and with DC, several someones.

I don't mind, have had some good times, but am thinking that next year, I do a few days away on my own. I'm a single parent now, but the DC are old enough to leave alone for a few days. In fact, I mentioned the idea, and they're cheering me on.

The idea of sitting somewhere pleasant, with my music and crochet, books, etc, seems so relaxing for me.

I do have a holiday booked for the three of us as well.

Clymene · 10/10/2021 10:56

I was on your other thread. I am so glad you went and had such a great time! SmileSmileSmileSmile

Madcats · 10/10/2021 10:57

Sidge that looks lovely. I'd forgotten that there are some really cheap deals outside school holidays. Wouldn't it be funny if we all rocked up to the same hotel for a solo winter sun trip! Lanzarote is about 24 degrees in November, in case you are wondering - I've just googled it!

Our big holiday for next year is an extended family rental in....The Peak District. My inlaws aren't the best cooks so I'll be doing the catering for 10+. We'd just started planning a splurge safari, too, which we'll now have to shift to 2023.

Hey ho.

@Peridot1

I’m also planning to go to ‘live’ in New York on my own for a month.

Always wanted to live there but never did. Have been a few times and loved it but always go with someone who hasn’t been before so we do the same basic tourist stuff. So I said to DH I would like to go for a month and he said do it. So my plan is to book a serviced apartment or similar and go for 3 or 4 weeks. DH might then come and we will go somewhere for a week together. He’s been a few times on business so has no interest in NY itself.

I want to be able to really spend time doing museums, walking around areas and just taking my time rather than speeding around over a long weekend.

I love this idea! It sounds wonderful 😊
legosunqueen · 10/10/2021 14:56

What an inspiring thread! Well done OP, so envious of @Peridot1 too!

Rkyii55 · 10/10/2021 15:03

Amazing to all the solo travellers. The eating alone thing would make me feel a bit self conscious though.

3luckystars · 10/10/2021 15:32

Great thread, it is definitely giving me ideas!!

EBearhug · 10/10/2021 17:35

Eating alone isn't a big deal - there are loads of people who travel singly for business, and slso for leisure, as this thread shows. No one will notice. I was able to get into a couple of places that couples and families were getting turned away from.

MinnieMountain · 10/10/2021 17:50

I’ve booked Vienna for next September Grin
