How can I make money I'm desperate?

throwitaway9 · 06/10/2021 16:18

Due to reasons out of my control, I am in a really tough financial spot. I have a two year old DS who stays at his dad's for a night or two per week. I am a full time student.

I am desperate to make money, but I don't know how. I did a waxing course but got no interest. I've thought about baking cupcakes and biscuits but not sure how well that would do. What do would think about organic, homemade dog treats?

Does anyone have any "side hustle" ideas or other ways similar to the above? I have even applied to a few gentlemen's clubs to be a dancer but I can't bring myself to do it.

I'm sick of always being stressed about money and not being able to give DS everything I feel he deserves.

I second bank healthcare assistant, that's what I did when I was studying to be a nurse.
How about contact tracing? They are really busy where I am and have just taken on loads of new staff and take on casual staff too, good money as well.

Try website Prolific and be a participant on surveys and psychology studies??

Royal Mail xmas jobs - loads of shifts, very flexible, decent money, easy work.

pisspants · 06/10/2021 16:59

You should take a look on the money section here, there is an ongoing thread called make £10 a day which has a new thread each month. I was in a tight spot a couple of years ago and through there found several side hustles that helped me a lot. I now only do low risk casino using Team Casino which I make about £200 to 300 a month from but it is not for everyone.

@throwitaway9 if you're doing a medical course why not join your local nhs Trust as a bank nursing assistant. You can choose the shifts that suit you, money is good and you get experience. In my Trust loads of medical, physio, nursing and paramedic students join the nursing assistant bank.

I agree about cleaning. It's tough to find people at the moment. Find a road with small houses near a station maybe.

Possibly also gardening but that's less flexible with hours and you'd need to make sure they provided tools. I had a friend who advertised herself as a weeder rather than a gardener as she liked gardens but wasnt an expert.

What gap are you trying to fill? If you cleaned 4 h a week you could be looking at £48 a week?

LadyMuckington · 06/10/2021 17:07

Nothing massively helpful to add but IME the gentleman’s clubs around here aren’t doing very well at the moment. Nobody is making anywhere near as much money as they were pre Covid and you still have to pay a floor fee to work (anything between £20-£50 for the night but that’s area dependant, some charge more) so you could end up losing money if you don’t do very well. So please don’t look at it like an easy fix if you’re struggling.

MrsRobbieHart · 06/10/2021 17:09

You’d probably make more money if you offered to clean the gentleman’s club!

LadyMuckington · 06/10/2021 17:11

Also are you claiming UC? Stupid but I thought students couldn’t claim it and didn’t know that certain exemptions applied (like having a child or claiming PIP) and didn’t claim for my first two years of being a student!

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 06/10/2021 17:13

Get on the bank at your local hospital as a HCA. When I was a student they paid £17 per hour on a Sunday, so I would try to work a 12 hour shift most Sundays to tide me over.

Even if they aren't actively advertising atm, Google the contact details and give them a ring.

TheDrsDocMartens · 06/10/2021 17:16

Uni research studies often pay. I used to get Amazon vouchers from a few researchers.

2bazookas · 06/10/2021 17:16

Get a cleaning job for cash.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 06/10/2021 17:22

Could you join an agency and do bank as a hca in a hospital. You can pick your own shifts and pay is usually weekly. The one round where I live is nhs professionals

daisyjgrey · 06/10/2021 17:24

Ooooh @throwitaway9 ok, you can definitely push that further if it's the uni that has done this to you. Unfortunately the only way to get anywhere with uni admin is to annoy everyone you can think of, day in and day out until you get somewhere. It's shit, it's long but it does work and they will eventually sort it. Cc in heads of school, HR, student wellbeing/services and include your reps.

I’ve made £40 from doing surveys on Prolific website this week.. it’s not a lot but it helps to save it up!

housecoat1968 · 06/10/2021 17:34

My friend very quickly set up an ironing business and was busy quickly. She doesn't drive so customers drop and pick up from her house.

Holidaytan · 06/10/2021 17:35

Amazon flex is great for ad hoc part time work. Paid weekly.

Tuliprain · 06/10/2021 17:50

Which companies pay for online surveys please? I will google but would like someone to recommend

Boatingforthestars · 06/10/2021 17:55

Set up a Facebook page as a self employed cleaner, a friend of mine started this year and is charging £15 an hour and is stacked.
Only outlay is she provides her own chemicals and cloths etc.

You'd be amazed at how many people will throw money at someone else to not have to do their own cleaning.

There's loads of business out there

Definitely sign up for staff bank for the hospital.

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 06/10/2021 18:02

@throwitaway9

He is in childcare due to my degree being full time, I get 85% of the costs covered by the childcare grant service as it's a medical course. I really need something with flexibility as my uni hours are unpredictable
Can you tutor? Online sites will be useful - findmeatutor might be worth looking at.
In4mation · 06/10/2021 18:04

Overnight carer.

Ring care agencies.

I also know some teaching agencies need over night carers in special need residential homes - worth ringing around as not all do.

In4mation · 06/10/2021 18:05

You can often sleep while you are there, they just need someone on call.

A medical student where I live did online tutoring to A-Level students to make extra money.
