Does anyone else use subtitles all the time?

So since I was a teen I use subtitles when watching tv constantly.
I was watching a dvd at my dads when I was a teen and he said ' why have you got subtitles on?' And it only clicked then that it's not the norm.

I know that it is usually for people hard of hearing but I just feel content knowing I can read what they are saying. If someone has a strong accent I always know I can read what they are saying.

People even say how can you read and watch? Well I take a second to glance at the words then take it in and it's easy to follow the story still.

I've not stopped since my teens and my partner is used to it now.

Does anyone else rely on subtitles?

Yes, all the time. Means I can have the volume lower.

Don't like watching without the subs.

rainbowandglitter · 03/10/2021 17:19

No I've never used them. How do you watch what's going on if you're reading subtitles the whole time?

Tiredpigeon · 03/10/2021 17:20

Yes, I do and have done for years. Other people seem to think it's odd but I seem to understand it better when I can read what's going on!

Leftphalange · 03/10/2021 17:21

Yes and it drives my husband crazy. He doesn't mind the netflix ones but hates the sky ones for some reason.

HappyPumpkin81 · 03/10/2021 17:21

Yes all the time. It annoys me when other people don't have them on 🙂

Only takes a second or two to read them.
Crumpetsandhoney · 03/10/2021 17:21

I use them all the time I prefer it I'm not deaf. I've also read it Increases children's literacy.

Lots of people think it is weird though

Marmite27 · 03/10/2021 17:21

We always have them on, I can have the volume lower and still follow the programme. I also don’t miss anything when they invariably start mumbling.

I have them on for the children too, I’m sure it’s contributed to their reading proficiency.

userxx · 03/10/2021 17:21

Yep, all the time. Glad I'm not the only strange one!

0blio · 03/10/2021 17:21

Yes, we always have them on. There has been something wrong with channel 4 sound and subtitles for a few days and I've really missed them, especially on Bake Off where some of the contestants have really strong accents.

SolitaryTree · 03/10/2021 17:22

Usually no. Not if I’m watching an English speaking film/programme.
But I really do enjoy watching non English speaking films with the subtitles and often actively seek them out.
I never have a problem with reading the subtitles and watching the film at the same time.

annacondom · 03/10/2021 17:22

Never used to but I do now. I find that if actors mumble or have strong accents then I get so much more out of it with the subtitles on. DH is the same.

Namechangeforthis88 · 03/10/2021 17:22

We've got in the habit of having them on, not always, but some programs seem to have a lot of muttering or talking too fast. When we were in a flat I didn't want to put the volume up.

Flunked · 03/10/2021 17:22

Yup, I use them all the time.

degsydoodoos · 03/10/2021 17:23

I never used to, but my son has them on by default on Netflix and I've got used to them being on now. I find it weird when they're off now.

wishing3 · 03/10/2021 17:23

Me! I started when baby would be sleeping in the lounge in the evening and I had tv on quiet, now it’s weird without them.

hugoagogo · 03/10/2021 17:24

It's great for when eating something crunchy. Grin

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 03/10/2021 17:25

Yes, I’m pretty deaf despite hearing aids so it makes it possible for me to watch many programmes.
My husband also has the habit of talking/repeating what someone’s just said which drives me potty. Having subtitles means I can a) ignore him b) still watch the programme!

PinkBuffalo · 03/10/2021 17:25

Yes I always do
But I have auditory processing issues and without them I cannot understand what people on tv are saying

SylvanasWindrunner · 03/10/2021 17:26

Yes! Always and have for as long as I can remember.

Emsmaman · 03/10/2021 17:28

We do! DH and I aren't british and we struggle to understand some accents so apart from live TV where there is a lag, they are always on. Also good that you can keep the volume low.

vampirethriller · 03/10/2021 17:28

I always do!

Row1n · 03/10/2021 17:28

Yep all the time. The adverts are always far too loud compared to the programme, actors all mumble at some point when theyre trying to be dramatic and in some programmes the back ground noise is far too loud. I also find a lot of american accents hard to understand as they seriously mumble and blur their words together.

OldSpeclkledHen · 03/10/2021 17:28

All the time since I got my first tv in my room (I'm 44 now 😳) ... been wearing heating aids for 4 years... still have subtitles on (guess it's more habit now)

Brigittebidet · 03/10/2021 17:28

Yep - particularly when it’s for something with “accents” (frankly anything other than RP). I also hate having loud TV so it helps.
