Help! Last minute city break ideas needed

SlouchingTiger · 03/10/2021 07:50

Have left it very, very last minute due to COVID.

I need to book something as time is running out.

Ideas please for a city break location for DH’s big birthday.

We have absolutely loved Rome, Amsterdam and Berlin.

So where now? Barcelona or somewhere else in Italy?

He wants to go to New York but that’s not allowed yet…

Any ideas, please? I feel as if nothing can compete with Rome and so feel a bit stumped and DH isn’t great at making travel decisions!

Privacy not quite what you had in mind, but we loved Belfast and the Antrim coast. Took the car on the ferry from Liverpool abs really enjoyed a day and night in Liverpool too.

*Privacy = probably!

Venice is wonderful

MinnieMountain · 03/10/2021 07:57

Malaga.
Great sherry and tapas bars.
Lovely beachfront that goes for miles.
There’s an old moorish palace and an older Roman fort above it.
It’s not as touristy as Barcelona or Venice (although Venice is stunning).

Valencia is really nice

SlouchingTiger · 03/10/2021 08:06

Thanks both.

I’ve heard Valencia is lovely. I also love the idea of going to Ireland but I reckon DH will want to go to somewhere that’s a bit more of a classic city break destination as it’s a big birthday. I don’t think he’ll go for a thinking outside of the box location (Although I like places that are off the beaten track, personally).

*thanks all, not both

Are you both fully vaccinated? If not, Italy requires 5 day quarantine (I looked at going but DD is 9 so not vaccinated).

Also they are v strict on leaving if you test positive, I know of a couple who went over summer & can't leave until they have a negative PCR

tigerbreadandtea · 03/10/2021 08:09

Seville

ChimChimeny · 03/10/2021 08:10

I loved Barcelona, wanted to go see half term as the weather is 19/20 so pleasant for sightseeing.

MaybeAMoaner · 03/10/2021 08:13

Edinburgh
Dublin
Barcelona

NotPennysBoat · 03/10/2021 08:14

Dubrovnik
Salzburg
Copenhagen

Ekofisk · 03/10/2021 08:15

Would suggest Vienna but I’m not sure whether Austria accepts UK proof of vaccination.

DH recommends Cadiz.

AuntieMarys · 03/10/2021 08:17

I preferred Palma to Barcelona.
Dubrovnik is fab, especially if he liked Game of Thrones.

SlouchingTiger · 03/10/2021 08:18

Yes, we’re both fully vaccinated. Gosh, that’s worrying about the tests to leave Italy. Would that still apply now? Perhaps less likely now that return to uk testing requirements have reduced ( not entirely sure what they though!)

Actually I probably sure have factored COVID in a bit more into the decision making : do they have random on arrival tests and what are current Covid rates? (I’m fully aware that I need to do this but wanted to decide on the shortlist first)

Wow! Loads of great ideas. Much appreciated. We have family in Scandinavia so probably not Copenhagen. DH has been to Dubrovnik without me actually, but did love it! Cadiz sounds intriguing…

Actually, DH has just really surprised me and announced that he has done some research just now and is erring towards Venice… I now need to do the dreaded Covid research!

Btw I would’ve put Istanbul on my own list!

Porto is lovely, as is Lisbon.

katscamel · 03/10/2021 08:31

Istanbul is amazing....lived there for a while and go back whenever I can. Ljubljana is nice, Seville, Tallin, Bologna,...so many places...so little time

You can check entry requirements on the Gov foreign travel advice website.

Verona with a train trip to Venice.

Slightly more relaxed than the cities you have been to but lots to see.

HelebethH · 03/10/2021 08:36

Vienna

RedRum27 · 03/10/2021 08:38

Yesterday we booked Venice for three nights for end of October. Surprisingly cheaper than what we expected and staying in San Marco. Travel rule changes come in on 4th October so makes it a little easier. Go for Venice! And near to Verona.

EdgeOfTheSky · 03/10/2021 08:40
