Do you know where your nearest public telephone box is?

Watching Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy atm and one of the characters goes and uses a telephone box. Got me thinking that I don’t actually know where my nearest is? I live in a village so not very big.

Last time I actually used one was probably in the early 90’s?

Yes but its literally opposite my house. So I'd have to be spectacularly unaware not to have noticed!

waybill · 02/10/2021 16:48

There always used to be one outside the chip shop about a mile away, but I've no idea whether it is still there or not - can't say I've noticed.

FOJN · 02/10/2021 16:49

I think I might know but wouldn't bet my house on its location. I can't remember the last time I used one.

CamdenLurker · 02/10/2021 16:49

The only telephone box I know of in my town now houses a defibrillator, there one in the next village that's a book exchange.

In4mation · 02/10/2021 16:49

Come to think of it, no I don’t. Are there any working ones still around?

The only ones I can think of have been turned into book swap stations.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 02/10/2021 16:50

Yea, but every time I've walked past it it's been destroyed in some way so doubt it would ever actually work if I needed it.

milkytwilightt · 02/10/2021 16:57

I thought our village had one but it seems we don’t. I must’ve Made that up

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/10/2021 16:58

I'm guessing there's one at the airport. (About a mile away, not just any random airport!) However I've never been inside the airport to look.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 02/10/2021 17:01

The one near me got removed. The only ones left are in the city centre and they're not in use either.

Loubiemoo · 02/10/2021 17:24

According to Google my nearest is 8 miles away Shock

I have no idea!

RedBonnet · 02/10/2021 17:28

Not sure what's in them, but we've got two of those old red ones and they're listed 😳

I'd live to have one for the garden 🥰🥰

ConfusedDotty · 02/10/2021 17:28

I live in a village, ours is outside the church with 2 foot high weeds growing in it. Come to think of it, I can't remember seeing it for a while, maybe it's not there anymore.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 02/10/2021 17:29

I have no idea. We were watching something last night and someone didn't have a mobile. DH said they could just use a phone box and I was wondering how likely it was that you could find one even in a city.

SpindleWhirl · 02/10/2021 17:35

It's on the nearest A road, outside the tattoo parlour, opposite Spoons and the bookies, just down from the priority red pillar box for covid PCR test returns and round the corner from a small evangelical church that hangs out oppressing women at the local sexual health clinic.

Agatha Christie had nothing on this shit.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 02/10/2021 17:45

Directly opposite my flat. I've heard some real humdingers of conversations as a result.

ThirdElephant · 02/10/2021 17:47

Yes. It's not far. One of the old fashioned red ones.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 02/10/2021 17:52

I've just googled and they tell me there is one 8 miles away. Which is a total lie, obviously.

HeronLanyon · 02/10/2021 17:52

Yes. Around 4 years ago I actually had to use it (think my mobile was lost/stolen and for some reason I had to make a really urgent call and I was pasig by one I walk by many times every week without even loci it nuire. I felt self conscious even opening it and being inside of it ! It worked. I had slightly forgotten what I do and I was remembering those cards we used to have to put in the slot which obvs I didn’t have. Luckily I had change. I was one with the little silver push buttons for numbers. Took me back !

Returnoftheowl · 02/10/2021 18:31

No, not a clue!

BogRollBOGOF · 02/10/2021 18:38

City centre 3 miles away?
The one for our neighbourhood was removed a couple of years ago.

I tried to use it over 10 years ago when I'd had a post CS check at the GP and was supposed to call DH to pick me up, but forgot my phone. It either wasn't working or needed a phone card. Either way, I ended up taking half an hour shuffling the half mile home. I'd had SPD so it was my longest walk in about 3 months.

MargaretThursday · 02/10/2021 18:51

Yes. Opposite our old house. Failing that the pub certainly used to have one.

Imatramp1 · 02/10/2021 18:52

Mine is 2 mins Way . But they are mors like crack boxes now.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 02/10/2021 18:53

There's one incredibly near me (several within a 5 min walk) - but I live just off a main road in London. Not sure how well any of them work - only ever seen them used for piss, crack, and rough sleeping. Sad

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/10/2021 18:53

Used to be one at the end of my street, now I've moved to a new build estate its probably the one in the high street but I've got no idea if its in working order or not.
