Do you know where your nearest public telephone box is?

Watching Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy atm and one of the characters goes and uses a telephone box. Got me thinking that I don’t actually know where my nearest is? I live in a village so not very big.

Last time I actually used one was probably in the early 90’s?

I don't even seem to be able to work out how to search for one.
I tried what seemed like the obvious phrase in DuckDuckGo, this is the top hit. ConfusedGrin

Google maps says 37 miles. I actually thought they were a thing of the past.

Molehillfromamountain · 03/10/2021 00:07

We have a traditional old red one at the end of the road, very handy for giving delivery drivers directions.
It's not in service though, the local council are thinking about putting a defib in there.

PickAChew · 03/10/2021 00:10

Just down the road, outside a pub. Last used it to shelter from a, sudden rainstorm when doing a pokemon go raid, about 3 years ago.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/10/2021 00:11

Oh, I've found one, 23 miles away. Except the street view of where it's supposed to be doesn't show one. Confused

And a quick check of the station in the nearest town a mere 5 or 6 miles away says it has telephones.

PickAChew · 03/10/2021 00:17

I wouldn't trust Google, as it lists the nearest one to me as 12 miles away.

PickAChew · 03/10/2021 00:21

It's very sad looking

plinkplinkfizzer · 03/10/2021 00:21

I would have to guess and say in the nearest pub which is 5 min. away ,other than that I don't know.

Coogee · 03/10/2021 00:27

Yes. About 600 yards from where I am sitting now.

Coogee · 03/10/2021 00:30

Just checked Google and, apparently, the nearest one is 163 miles away.

Nonsense.

Nat6999 · 03/10/2021 00:35

Outside Farmfoods next to the local primary school, we used to have three within 5 minutes walk of my mum's house, now only that one left.

SirenSays · 03/10/2021 00:51

I know where three are. One is a red one in a tourist area and I think one of the others may actually contain a defibrillator rather than a phone.

BoredZelda · 03/10/2021 09:27

No idea. Nobody uses them anymore, time to get rid of them all.

Fifthtimelucky · 03/10/2021 09:38

My nearest is about 1/2 a mile away outside the fish and chip shop. I've never seen anyone use it though and have no idea whether it is functional.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/10/2021 09:42

the one round the corner has gone, and there was another down the road, which has also gone,
another one a couple of miles away is now full of books

icedcoffees · 03/10/2021 09:45

The nearest one that's still an actual phone box is probably about 30 miles away.

The nearest two to us are used as a massive fish tank and a book exchange (not at the same time) Wink

LynetteScavo · 03/10/2021 10:01

I found one a mile from my house just before the first lockdown. I used it to see if it worked (it did) I and made DH take a photo of me using it.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/10/2021 10:08

Yes, in town 8 miles away. We did have one on our road, but they removed it because it was used by the village youth for youthly activities.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/10/2021 10:10

Google says the closest is 92 miles away Hmm

starfishmummy · 03/10/2021 10:44

None in my area. There were some in the city centre but rum by a private company (black boxes with phones and wifi); I know where one was but not sure if it is still there. However I will be in that location next week so I will have to have a look!!

LindaEllen · 03/10/2021 10:48

We have one at the little cluster of shops at the top of our road, but I have no idea if it's actually working or not.

Coogee · 03/10/2021 11:22

No idea. Nobody uses them anymore, time to get rid of them all.

Not very sensible in areas with no mobile signal. Like where I am now.

Yubaba · 03/10/2021 11:28

There is one next to our local park, I’ve never seen anyone using it and it has a whiff of piss every time you walk past it.

torquewench · 03/10/2021 11:35

The only one I can think of is outside my office. A few years ago it was in the local paper as the only people using it were drug dealers using it for business calls

RuthW · 03/10/2021 11:48

All the ones in my area are now defibs.
