Dear OP. Well done for getting it sorted. That takes such courage. My best friend actually had to have 14 teeth removed last week. The build up and her fear were the worst bit. She was so relieved when it was done. I really hope it goes well for you.

Unsuremover · 01/10/2021 23:45

I worked on reception in a dentist many moons ago and I can say hand on heart there wasn’t a day went by when someone wasn’t visibly nervous and probably once a week someone showing extreme anxiety. The only time it was commented on was during my training, which was to train me to treat as the normal thing it is. Dentists and dental nurses are used to it, more often than not sympathetic to it and it certainly doesn’t faze them or warrant comment. I was also blown away by how many people don’t have their own teeth, you’d honestly be surprised.
Even after all that I still hate going to the dentist. Steer into and accept it’s weird and scary but then you’ll be out the other side.

ShowerOfShite · 02/10/2021 00:24

Hats off to you OP for being brave enough to get it all sorted.
My own teeth are awful and I need most of my front ones removed.
I am working up to it, I'm horribly embarrassed by my teeth. I hope it all goes well 😊

KloppsTeeth · 02/10/2021 01:00

Flowers for you op. My aunt had the same procedure as you, and was nervous but very relieved now it is all done and she has her implants and bridges. She feels much more confident too.

CorianderAndCream · 02/10/2021 10:26

Had a bunch of my top ones out as a teen. The needle hurts a touch but then totally painless!

Stath · 02/10/2021 11:28

Sending you calming thoughts for your procedure @Imatramp1

Have you thought about asking your GP for diazepam for the appointment? Especially if you’re comfortable mentioning your experience with being abused and your fears?

All the best.

Justilou1 · 02/10/2021 11:42

You might find wearing headphones and listening to music or a podcast might help your stress levels too.

Cantdecidewhich · 02/10/2021 11:51

I hope it all goes well for you and ignore the nasty comment!

Do you min if I ask the cost please? I am just researching getting this done and considering going abroad but would prefer the UK.

I will be terrified too but it will be so worth it in the end. You will have a beautiful smile soon!

@SweetBabyCheeses99

There’s only really one thing that causes teeth to rot - the bacteria from plaque. Poor diet combined with not brushing will do that.
Not true, I have inherited (genetic) predisposition for gum disease.

Teeth are fine, only 2 fillings, but age has meant my teeth are gradually loosening.

And for the record I have a report from a gum specialist to confirm this. Which is useful as 90% of dentists (that I've been to) just assume you don't brush.

I've used te-pe brushes and a waterpik for years. It is not always poor brushing.

@Imatramp1
You should be so proud of yourself and what a role model you are, being so incredibly strong physically and mentally in front of your children. You’re such a star Flowers Wishing you well for the next few months xx

@SweetBabyCheeses99
You should be ashamed of yourself. My mum & I have had to spend between us hundreds of thousands of pounds on dental work due to a degenerative chronic health condition that has a knock-on effect to our teeth. Like another poster said, go and educate yourself. Angry

@PeoplePleaserBe thank you Smile the out come will be good in the end.

I think sweetbabychesse was looking for a reaction possibly to try and cause a pile on. As the comment was made and just vanished so either wanted a reaction or now just feels silly Grin

Good luck with it all OP, keep us up to date with how you get on.
I have periodontal disease (years of smoking- now stopped- and genetic) and am on the first part of trying to get it all sorted. I'm scared and worried I'll lose my teeth but am trying to be brave and get it sorted. Everywhere I look people seem to have amazing teeth, and I feel so sad that that's not me too. Hopefully we'll both get our smiles back soon. Good luck x

Absolute rubbish and massively unhelpful and insensitive.

My brother and I had the same diet, same check ups, dental care growing up etc and I ended up with loads of fillings and he's still never had a single one.
He also smoked heavily and wasn't exactly great at brushing etc as a teenager, I've always been very particular about brushing and have never smoked.

My dentist says people's teeth are very different, some people can eat rubbish and have poor dental hygiene and never have any or like me, not be so lucky like me.

So @SweetBabyCheeses99 as I said at the start of my post, totally unhelpful nonsense.

Good luck op Thanks

Oh my goodness I do feel for you. I've only had one tooth removed and it was traumatic. What helped me was taking paracetamol then ibuprofen in turns and the mouth wash that helps with bleeding gums. Do not bend over even to tie your shoes. And rest as much as you can. It took me a week for the pain to go. But I ended up with well healed gums.

I hope it goes well.

Thank you . I might even do a before and after pic.

And yes I notice that as well. I feel like everyone around me has perfect teeth perfect skin and hair. They fall out of bed and still look good. I can spend ages getting ready and look like I fell out I fell out or bed.

I hope you get sorted I'm sure you will be fine. I think having an understanding dentist is pretty important

Thank you. I'm not one bit worried about the after pain to be honest. It's just the dentist part of if. Then the numbness after. I can imagine being on the bus dribbling 😩. I have been through so much pain with my teeth. That having done removed will be a walk in the park compared to pain I have had in the past.

People who have had implants. If you had to have temporary dentures. How did you manage? Especially the bottom ones. Did you use anything to keep them fixed in ?

OP posts:
IncessantNameChanger · 03/10/2021 16:35

Oh bless you OP. That sounds crappy. If you have a happy place you can try to picture yourself there if you feel a rising panic. Its actually quite consuming to do so is a good distraction. Take a few really deep breaths then picture yourself arriving. Then every detail of the visit.

I had a hour long MRI last month and I'm ok with them but they can get a bit much. I pictured myself at a favourite beach with the kids getting out the car, shouting to them to not run off, unpacking the car, walking up the hill, seeing the beach, walking over the sand .... then it was all over. I almost fell asleep. Not it's not visualizing being relaxed it's totally retracing steps. Then theres no head room for other things

My son has just had 5 teeth removed from his bottom right of his mouth, and he was so worried beforehand.
Yes he now has gaps and at the moment he doesn't care as he is out of pain, he is back at the dentist this week to discuss the next steps. He had his jaw broken a few years ago and it all stems from that and he also has Marfan's.
But you are taking such huge steps and I wish you well and a speedy recovery. Cheers to the start of a new you and don't forget to document it all so you can see how far you have come.

I hope your son is OK and he's on the mend . I think its good that there are more choices now with what a dentist can do. Flowers

A before and after pic would be brilliant 😊 Yes I feel the same, I get a bit obsessive looking at people's teeth and smiles and wishing I could be like that... I really hope we both get sorted soon. Just a quick question, how are you paying for your treatment? 10.5k is a lot of money, I hope my treatment isn't that much otherwise I'm screwed Confused!

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 03/10/2021 18:10

Agree with @Justilou1,

A podcast or music that relaxes you is the way to go. My dentist is happy to for me to listen to my music. If she needs to ask something she just gives my arm a wee tap. I also use a stress ball to give my hands something to do. She also lets me have a time out if I’m struggling, I just have to raise my hand. She is the sweetest dentist ever.

Good luck and may your new smile bring you much joy.
