Looks dreadful but tastes amazing?

Last night I made a veg traybake with baby potatoes, carrots, leeks, mushrooms, peppers, loads of garlic. Then towards the end I put on some cherry tomatoes and tenderstem broccoli and stirred through some cottage cheese.
It was scrumptious but looked dreadful ( mushroom coloured stock mixed with cottage cheese covering every element); even worse when I warmed up the leftovers for lunch!

What do you make that tastes better than it looks?

Not just you, I make a Spanish dish called Potaje, cabbage, carrots, celery, courgettes, onions, peppers, chick peas, and pasta. Smoked paprika and herbs, Looks like green slop but I have queues for it if I announce I’m making it!

Missed out spinach, vital ingredient!

FelicityBeedle · 30/09/2021 23:30

@Gilead
I’ve just googled that, looks gorgeous. Will be making soon

MusicTeacherSussex · 30/09/2021 23:35

The sultan's pleasure! Its basically a lamb tagine style ottoman Casserole which is lovely but you serve it in a bed of blitzed aubergine with quark and it looks gross but it tastes like heaven on earth

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2021 23:39

I made a creamy tomato sauce for pasta that looked like vomit. It was lovely.

WildImaginings · 30/09/2021 23:57

Every time I make risotto, no matter which veg I use (courgette, peas, butternut squash etc) it looks like grey gloop because I use mushrooms in my veg stock.

Tastes bloody lovely, no matter how it looks!

NotMyCat · 01/10/2021 00:01

Corned beef hash. Looks grim but delicious with red cabbage and bread and butter

NotMyCat · 01/10/2021 00:01

Photo evidence of grimness

Looks dreadful but tastes amazing?
RockinHorseShit · 01/10/2021 00:04

I make a thing we call cheesy risotto, basically peppers, sweet corn, onions, mushrooms, peas, tomatoes & any other odd bits of veg that need using up coked in cheese sauce & rice, with a bit of paprika

It looks like someone has vomited into the pan🤢 but it disappears fast as everyone loves it

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/10/2021 00:07

I make beef stew that looks like a cow pat on a plate. It tastes amazing though.

Eminybob · 01/10/2021 02:16

Sweet potato dhal. Genuinely looks like sick, including carrotty chunks Envy
Tastes lovely

Gilead · 01/10/2021 15:06

@FelicityBeedle it’s one of those things you’ll find all over, but with regional differences. May I recommend the use of smoked paprika, rather than sweet.
I’m going to ave to make this over the weekend!

Gilead · 01/10/2021 15:06

Have to! Apologies!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 01/10/2021 15:48

My mum makes a gluten free polenta cake. It looks... weird. It looks like it should be savoury and have a terrible texture.
Except it isn't and it doesn't! It's very nice and you can't tell its GF.

CatTerrier · 01/10/2021 15:58

My mum's chicken soup looks like vomit but tastes A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

Pikamoo · 01/10/2021 16:30

Braised chicken feet...looks like, well, chicken feet. Taste and texture is really nice though.

withiceplease · 01/10/2021 16:44

@Gilead
I'll be making that thank you
Is yours a specific recipe?

Gilead · 01/10/2021 19:37

I will write it out with timings later tonight or in the morning, it’s the one my Abuela (grandmother) used to make. She was from Gibraltar.

MintyCedric · 01/10/2021 19:42

I created Mexican Potato Hash a few weeks ago to use up some random leftovers...

Half a tin of potatoes, sliced
2 rashers of smoked bacon, chopped
3 spring onions, sliced
1/3 red pepper, chopped
1/2 small tin sweetcorn
Patatas Bravas seasoning
Generous tblsp creme franchise
2 slices of Mexicana Cheese

Fry bacon, then add potato and cook until golden. Add onions, pepper, sweetcorn and bravas seasoning and cook for a couple of minutes. Add creme fraiche and cheese and stir until melted and heated through.

Looks dreadful but tastes amazing?

Baba ghanoush. Just looks like greyish mush. Tastes divine. Decorate with lemon and parsley to disguise the grey.

withiceplease · 01/10/2021 19:47

Gilead thank you 😊

Gilead · 02/10/2021 00:55

Couple of cloves of garlic,
I teaspoon of Italian mixed herbs
I large Onion
Two celery sticks, medium length.
Desert spoon of smoked paprika.
Tin of Chick peas, tin of tomatoes
Vegetable stock cube
Small bunch of spring greens, or small sweetheart cabbage, shredded.
Two large Carrots
Largeish courgette.
5 or six nines of frozen spinach
Macaroni
Grated cheese.
Chop onion, garlic, celery, finely and fry gently. At the point onion is clear add smoked paprika and sir through for a couple of seconds. Add tinned tomatoes, cabbage and spinach. Fill tin with water and add stock cube. Add to pan. Add mixed herbs. Simmer for about half sn hour. Add thickly chopped carrots and chunky chopped courgettes. Cook for another fifteen minutes then add pasta.
This should be gloopy, it’s a combination of a soup and a stew, the macaroni will absorbed excess moisture and it tastes better for being slightly overcooked.

Serve topped with grated cheese and chunks of fresh bread.
This is a veggie version. Some people add potatoes but I don’t like it.
For a non veggie, some areas use chorizo chunks and others fried belly pork.
Hope you enjoy!

(Dessert, not desert)!
