I'm home alone today and except for whatsapping my friends have nothing to do with this incandescent rage and hopeless sadness.

Anyone else need to talk? Sad

@Pallisers

There are many evil women like men who would do the same if they could- a person being male does not give them a higher propensity for being basically evil.

That makes no sense. Off the top of my head I can think of about 10 ways I could injure my 6 foot 2 husband without breaking a sweat. Presumably all the women who apparently have the same drive to violence as men would figure it out too.

You can think of 10 ways to injure a 6ft 2 male without any potential physical retaliation... really? There is an issue with violence in society but the way of dealing with it is harsher prison sentences for those that commit it and the death penalty for the man that has killed Sarah reintroduced.
TidyOmlette · 29/09/2021 17:40

I would fully support the death penalty for situations like this. There’s absolutely no room for doubt and it was premeditated. Years in jail with cushy rooms and visitation rights aren’t punishment.

endofagain · 29/09/2021 17:41

I am sure I read that elderly women over a certain age are not included in the official rape and murder statistics.

Simonjt · 29/09/2021 17:41

@EsmaCannonball

The statistic of two women murdered a week is only for women murdered by a current or ex partner. Crime statistics are unsatisfactory and unreliable. Some exclude child victims, some exclude older people, some only allow a victim to be counted a certain number of times per year, sexual violence is counted separately from other violence, and, of course, some crimes are more likely to go unreported.
I didn’t know that, thats awful.
HeronLanyon · 29/09/2021 17:41

jennifer I’m at the Bar. Yes I’m in crime. I’ve said what I think above. I don’t think it will ever happen. I’d love a week of feeling safe - live in central London and experiencing something I’ve never experienced before - absence of generalised alertness/fear/precautions when out an about in my community. I don’t think it would ever happen. There are fundamental human rights arguments against it ever happening. I don’t think that means we can’t imagine it and realise how astonishing it would be for women.

JaneJeffer · 29/09/2021 17:41

I don't think there's any deterrent for men like him. He would have known as a police man that he would get caught but that didn't stop him. Any prison sentence he gets will not be long enough.

Duchess379 · 29/09/2021 17:42

I'm a retired police officer & I'm absolutely mortified at this cretin! We should seriously bring back hanging. Just when we thought public confidence in the police couldn't get any lower, Couzens strikes, terrifying most women in the UK. For what it's worth, police officers hate him as much as you do. I hope he gets a good seeing to in prison. Absolute a-hole 😠

Jennifermadison · 29/09/2021 17:42

@WrapAroundYourDreams

The vast majority of men don't care about women being murdered- really?

It's telling that you're more bothered about some of us being completely fucking sick of shitty men (and I mean the shitty ones, not all, but like many on this thread I'm so sick of NAMALT and all the handmaidens who spout this crap) that our opinions and trust of them is in the gutter, than what is actually happening to women ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Sarah Everard, Sabina Nessa, Julia James, Bibaa Henry, Nicole Smallman. They are just a small number of recent victims. I couldn't possibly remember the rest because their are enough fucking awful men that keep doing this. All the time.

If men cared, they'd stop with their shitty misogynistic jokey comments, they'd care about sexism, they'd listen when we call ourselves feminists rather than shifting uncomfortably in their seats. Being a man who thinks it's wrong that some men hurt women is nowhere fucking near enough.

I would support the death penalty being brought back for killers like this police officer but your ridiculous rants saying most men don't care about murdered women are embarrassing.
pucelleauxblanchesmains · 29/09/2021 17:43

"going around saying you’re terrified of all individual officers is over the top" I didn't say that though did I? I asked how I'm meant to trust that any individual officer isn't going to hurt me. And the Harold Shipman question is stupid in that a) I make a calculated risk to trust any individual doctor but I am also aware that some doctors abuse their power and yes sometimes this does make me wary and b) the Harold Shipman case made people more vigilant and changed how some things operated: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-30192721

WrapAroundYourDreams · 29/09/2021 17:43

The only person spouting crap are ignorant people like you trying to stigmatise all men by dribbling about curfews etc. I'm sure your tune would soon change if it was your son or husband under curfew but maybe it wouldn't.

Aw, poor men Hmm

Do you really not understand that the suggestion of a curfew for men is in part meant to be symbolic, for men to actually understand the restrictions that women put upon themselves to keep themselves safe from the scum of the earth like Couzens? The restrictions that society suggests women put on themselves? Don't walk where it's dark, don't wear headphones, hide your jewellery and phone, keep your keys in your hand etc etc.

I have a son. I have a daughter. When they are grown I will worry about them both but I can't imagine for a second I will worry about a similar fate to Sarah Everard befalling my son. I will be terrified for my daughter though. And I would hope my son would understand the symbolism involved in observing a curfew. And that he would understand his male privilege.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/09/2021 17:44

@MrsRobbieHart

Men kill women in the uk at a rate of over 2 a week. This wasn’t evil at work, this wasn’t an anomaly or a one off. This is normal life! This is tolerated and permitted in our society. For it to change, all men have to change it. All of them.
Yup.

Women are murdered by men at a rate that dwarfs most terror incidents, but this doesn't merit days of mourning, memorials, etc. It's just normal life. It cannot go on.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 29/09/2021 17:44

Also, @SteffGreen1812, two teachers at my school did abuse their students and I'd be lying if I said that after that had been found out and they had been convicted I wasn't much warier around male teachers.

LikeACatInTheDark · 29/09/2021 17:44

I hope he gets a good seeing to in prison.
I can't agree with this - you can't tackle rape culture by endorsing rape...

Rebeccasmoonnecklace · 29/09/2021 17:45

I can only begin to imagine how absolutely terrified Sarah Everard must have been, the news updates today have been shocking. I also keep thinking about the recent murder of Sabina Nessa too. Just two innocent women who should have been safe walking at night. My heart breaks for them.

sleeponeday · 29/09/2021 17:45

@Jennifermadison

If anyone witnessed a crime of a black man murdering a person and claimed " all black people " should have curfews and take collective responsibility they would probably be arrested for racism and rightly so. It seems that men are fair game where one commits a terrible crime yet just based on what's between their legs they should endure a curfew and take collective responsibility?

Some real crackpots posting on this thread- the tarring of all people with one brush based on race or gender is disgusting and the same trait as a society we condemn in racists. Can you imagine if it was the other way around and society said the same thing about women.. you wouldn't be able to hear yourself speak with the cries of misogyny regarding a specific crime

99% of sexual crimes are male perpetrated. 88% of their victims are women.

Around 13500 men are in prison for sex offences at any one time, as opposed to around 120 women.

95% of prisoners are men, and of the 5% who are women, hardly any are convicted of violent offending - it's almost all property crime, and half of those women are jailed for a crime that was committed to support the drug habit of someone else - and that someone else is usually a man.

Shall I go on? Because believe me, I can. There's an avalanche of data to show that women very rarely harm others. Men commonly do. That's just a fact.Of course not all men do this. But almost all who do this are men. The distinction is not complex.

These facts are why we have separate spaces for women, and why we need them. Women are effectively under a curfew - see all the comments about Sarah Everard going home 'at a sensible time'. Most women don't stroll around the streets at night alone, do they?

The problem is male violence. We are smaller and less strong, and if a man seriously wants to harm us, our chances of effective self-defence are almost nil. Women pose no risk to men. Men pose a risk to one another, and above all, to us - male on male violence tends to be linked to drugs, gangs, other forms of clear criminality. Male violence to women tends to be interpersonal, and/or sexual. It is because we are women.

These are all facts.

Claiming black people pose a risk to white people is racist because it's not true. It's a hateful lie.

Claiming men are the problem when it comes to risk to women is true. It's just pointing out that water is wet. It is not hateful to state truths.

Almost all those who inflict violence upon women are men.

Great, so this thread has now descended into "won't someone think of the menz"

Fuck off, I don't give a shit about men or their hurty feelfeelz at this particular point in time.

thelastgoldeneagle · 29/09/2021 17:46

Poor Sarah, and her poor poor family. They sounded absolutely tortured in their victim statements. So, so hard to listen to.

But have you seen this article? www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/sep/28/at-least-15-serving-or-former-police-have-killed-women-in-uk-since-2009-report

Something is seriously wrong with some of the men who want to join the police. Shocking.

WrapAroundYourDreams · 29/09/2021 17:46

No it's embarrassing that you want to come on a thread like this and show more concern at the opinions some of us have, based on our own lived experiences, as though this causes men actual harm in anything like the way women are subjected to. Every single day.

I'm also glad for you if you are lucky enough to have never feared a man, or the police. That fear never leaves. Ever.

I just wanted to take a moment to share my story and my view on the Sarah Everard case just like many of you, to get it off my chest.

In 2018, I took a taxi home rather than walking and was kidnapped by the taxi driver. I was assaulted and kept in the taxi locked for hours before I was finally released- I’m guessing out of a guilty conscience- it was harrowing. I’d taken a taxi as I thought it was safer than walking (like I’d always been taught). Only five days after this incident, I was then getting the bus home and followed by a different man who kept shouting that I needed to speak to him, he loved me, he wouldn’t touch me if I just stopped. I’d never seen him before in my life. Both times it was around 7pm. Luckily since, I’ve learnt to drive but that’s a privilege and many woman aren’t able too, so have to walk or take public transport.

There are many mixed messages about woman staying safe, get a taxi don’t get a taxi, walk in lit areas don’t walk at all, trust a police officer, now dont. I actually think they key lies in school with giving young men (13 and up) and young women if necessary, real life stories and heavier lessons about safety and consent and the dangers of pornography against real life.

With so much access to the internet, so many men become bored with what they consider “vanilla” sex. They watch more dangerous and darker things and it becomes ingrained. It’s so important to teach young people the dangers of pornography and the importance of respect and consent and real home in the image that it could be their mother, sister friend in those dangerous positions out late at night.

I think the solution lies with education, as like has been said- there’s not much women can change as they’ll be attacked no matter what.

I don't endorse rape but I could not care less what happens to him. He deserves the worst.
antoniawhite · 29/09/2021 17:48

I hope he never leaves prison again.

And all my thoughts are with Sarah's family, who will replay forever their imaginings of what happened to their lovely girl.

maxiflump1 · 29/09/2021 17:48

@WrapAroundYourDreams

Not the police.

Really? You don't think the police are to blame, not even in this case, not even a tiny bit?

As an institution they are corrupt and rotten to the core- they don't give a shit about women. They look after their own, cover for their corrupt colleagues and their record of failing to protect women and children speaks for itself.

You have no idea how hard the police work. I'm a child abuse detective and I tell you me and my colleagues work out arses off day and night to try and keep woman and children safe. We see and hear things that most people could never even imagine so don't try and tell me that we fail the vulnerable in society. I've spent hours working overtime to ensure men get remanded and have gone home to my own children broken and exhausted. If you think you could do any better please try. And I tell you something else most coppers despise bent cops and would do their upmost to root them out.

I'm with you @Bordois, it's laughable what @Jennifermadison wants to call 'embarrassing'.

I've read her family's impact statements. I don't even know what to say. I'm so fucking angry. So angry and so so sad.
