Food poisoning dice roll

I had a chicken fillet burger for dinner this evening and followed all cooking instructions. Was eating it in dim light and thought it felt a bit too... juicy.

Big light turned on. Burger raw inside. I reckon I swallowed about 3 decent sized raw bites. Envy

I'm working all day tomorrow (teacher). What are my chances of getting off with a lucky escape?

Anything I can do / eat / drink to minimise impact? My tummy already feels burbly but suspect it's hypochondria and/or over awareness!

Gosh, it's difficult to say. Luckily most UK chicken will have been vaccinated from salmonella so its campylobacter that could be on the cards.

dalmatianmad · 26/09/2021 21:53

What time did you eat it?

OneMorePieceofCheese · 26/09/2021 21:53

@dalmatianmad

What time did you eat it?
About 8pm.

Hmm, tricky. Are we talking raw as in there was visible blood? Or just a bit pink?

There are many stories I've read of this happening and nothing came of it. Apparently, whilst not ideal it is not 100% guaranteed to make you ill, particularly if the chicken was well stored and prepared in the first place.

Chicken is crammed full of antibiotics these days isn't it?

lljkk · 26/09/2021 22:00

Only about 10% chance you'll be ill, OP.

There was no blood - it was a chicken thigh fillet burger, but it looked a lot like raw chicken - mainly the texture was too wet, and yes, pinkish but genuinely looked like uncooked chicken. You could see the change at the edge of the burger where it had cooked properly and was white.

It had been stored properly my end (freezer burger, cook from frozen), but obviously can't comment on the supply chain!

I was at a BBQ once where some chicken was being slow cooked on the BBQ...like you we ate in dim light once it was dark and I probably had about 1/3 of it before realising the texture wasn't quite right and that it was still raw in the middle 😭 however I suffered no ill effects at all! Think positive and hopefully you'll be fine!

Fluffypastelslippers · 26/09/2021 22:08

You will probably be fine tomorrow but I would expect to become ill with campylobacter later in the week Sad

akandjakh · 26/09/2021 22:08

"Chicken is crammed full of antibiotics these days isn't it?"

No of course it isn't 🤦‍♀️🙄

FlorallyBankrupt · 26/09/2021 22:10

Ooh, now chicken thigh fillets DO look red in the middle, it's where the meat was attached to the bone - and they are fattier than breast so will seem "juicier"!

Maybe it wasn't undercooked at all? I recall getting in a right lather over a piece of pink chicken I found in a pub salad. It was stained with beetroot.

FizzyPink · 26/09/2021 22:11

Yes, when I had campylobacter it took a good few days to make itself known before I ended up in the hospital.

If it was a frozen one, aren’t they basically pre cooked anyway?

thisplaceisweird · 26/09/2021 22:11

Hopefully you'll be ok but I thought everyone cut into chicken a bit to check or at least used a meat thermometer!
Next time chop it in half

OneMorePieceofCheese · 26/09/2021 22:14

Normally they are! This was a posh Aldi one and it was definitely, definitely not precooked and definitely raw.

It was a monster of a burger. Retrospectively there's no wonder it didn't cook in the 30 mins cooking time.

If you have any of the arsen alb., 30c homeopathic remedy or can get some from a chemist or health food shop they will do the trick. I take them on holiday - I once realised I was eating raw pork and within the hour I was not only feeling sick my temp went up but a few doses of arsen alb solved the problem. It has the energy of arsen and encourages the body to think its been poisoned and trigger the immune system to respond in this way from my understanding.

ittakes2 · 26/09/2021 22:26

Some parts of thigh meat can stay red/pink even if other parts go white.

I know... but this was raw. Taste, texture, colour, everything. Envy Vom. (Well, not yet thankfully.)

Sending all good vibes Cheese! I sympathise, but try to look at the positives - you only had about 3 mouthfuls, your body is pretty good at zapping unwanted pathogens if the load isn't too heavy, and it isn't a given that anything nasty was lurking in the meat anyway.

Fingers crossed, hope you can distract yourself. I'm phobic about such things so I have been where you are and paced many a room in my lifetime. Flowers

I might have spoken too soon. Just passed out and nearly shat myself in a shopping centre.

On a train home, sitting close to the toilets.

NB it could be IBS but it's been a while since I've had an attack this bad!

OP posts:
Fluffypastelslippers · 29/09/2021 16:10

Oh no OP Sad

Gladioli23 · 29/09/2021 16:38

Hopefully it is IBS, as even if it's still grim at least it might pass sooner.

Do you have any IBS meds? I find they can help reduce exacerbation of symptoms caused by the stomach bug sometimes.
