I normally drive to work, but am dusting off the bike for this week!

I've got a 500 mile round trip next week so I've filled up but am definitely nervous 😬

WindBlowAutumnDays · 26/09/2021 19:59

I regret being a decent person and thinking of others. I got petrol when there were no ques after hearing the initial news that there may be a problem, I guessed it would cause panic buying, I had little fuel so only bought a little more to not run out until the rush sorted it's self out, now 90% of the petrol is gone and a refinery is going bust.
I now have a crisis not of my making that requires a tank plus of petrol and all I have is a little. I regret not filling to the top like others now.

YetAnotherWalk · 26/09/2021 20:05

We will have to walk every single school run all week if things don't settle down. I needed fuel on Friday but wasn't prepared to go and sit in a queue blocking the main road. Tried 6 stations yesterday - none to be had and nothing today either at the 3 closest to us (DH checked on the way through to taking DC to their activity)

He (DH) will be OK to commute to work for a few days fingers crossed

PinkBuffalo · 26/09/2021 20:14

I usually fill up on a weekend for the working week. Not been able to get any and no other way of getting to work.
I can manage one day there and back but other than that no. My plan is I start work early am, the town I work in has a morrisons whose garage opens at 06:00 I am desperately hoping they might have delivery overnight ready for opening. If not then I will have to take rest of the week off work which is a pain we are so short staffed and I have so much work. I can some wfh but not much it is so stressful 😢

SquirmOfEels · 26/09/2021 20:16

Me, no, but I think I'll get an earlier bus as they might be rammed.

DH has rescheduled his whole week as he was meant to be at a couple of distant sites, and doesn't have enough fuel to cover the itinerary and no certainty of when he'll be able to get more. Getting stuck would be considerably worse all round than WFH, which is what he will be doing

voxnihili · 26/09/2021 20:30

I’ve got 2 days of fuel left then will have to go by train. It’s times like this that I’m glad DD goes to nursery near where I work. She loves the train so she’ll be incredibly excited.

PatchworkElmer · 26/09/2021 20:33

I’m going to see if I can work from home on Tuesday to save a bit of fuel (I realise I’m very fortunate to have this option!) but will have to go in on my other ‘office day’. I’ve got to do a long drive next weekend and am hoping things are more settled by then.

Larryyourwaiter · 26/09/2021 20:33

I’m worried. I fill up every few weeks but I’m in my 2nd week now. I have to drive to work, there’s no other way. I leave the house when DC go to school and home around the same time as them. Public transport would make me hours late.
Hope it calms down.

dementedma · 26/09/2021 20:36

Yup, back to working from home having only just got back there after sodding Covid!

EmmaStone · 26/09/2021 20:37

I've got about a quarter tank left and need to commute for the first 3 days of the week (which also serves as getting the children to school). We live rurally, there is no other option besides driving, and we also don't have many petrol stations locally - I did a 20 mile round trip today and all the forecourts (the 3 'local' petrol stations) were closed (Tesco's open for emergency vehicles). I'm hoping things sort themselves out a bit in the first half of the week. Although with government all living and working in London, I guess they're not that fussed 😡.

I've got a friend due to start a 15 day course of radiotherapy this week terrified she won't be able to get to hospital due to the shortages. Puts things into perspective.

Latenightreader · 26/09/2021 20:39

I’m working from home two days this week. I am really worried that I won’t be able to drive the 200 miles home on Thursday (currently working away). I really need to collect some warmer clothes for me and my daughter, plus her birthday presents, and if I don’t go home this weekend I won’t be able to go until November, plus the house will have been unoccupied for longer than my insurance allows. I was supposed to go three weeks ago but we all had Covid. Also, I really, really want to sleep in a real bed for a couple of nights. I just want my two days at home...

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 26/09/2021 20:41

Dh and I share a car, I normally drive to my work on the days he wfh but I'll walk this week. He works too far away to walk, get bus/train as he starts at 5am. We have enough petrol for 3 days.
Both kids get the bus to school, will be interesting to see if it still comes, school is 12 miles away so too far to walk.

skippy67 · 26/09/2021 20:42

We're supposed to be taking dd back to uni on Tuesday. If we can't get any petrol, she will go back on the train with a suitcase, and we'll move the rest of her stuff when we're able to fill up.

waybill · 26/09/2021 20:43

I was supposed to go to an event today, but I decided not to go. I had enough fuel to get halfway there, and that was it. The decision was made for me really.

amusedbush · 26/09/2021 20:44

Thankfully I filled up to about three quarters of a tank a week ago. I drive DH to work every morning (he doesn’t drive and can’t carshare due to covid) but as luck would have it, he is in Tuesday-Friday this week then off for ten days. I wfh anyway so hopefully things will be back to normal by then!

8dpwoah · 26/09/2021 20:51

Thankfully DP had already arranged to work from home from Monday as we are on pre-induction self imposed isolation but he would have been changing to that if not. I managed to get fuel so I could get to my three medical monitoring appointments this week and so if I do get told to go in early for induction my partner will be able to come and do the 30 min drive each way to hospital at least a couple of times before anything major happens, and be able to get me and new baby back home. But he won't be visiting every day while I'm on antenatal if nothing much happening as can't risk running out later in the week.

He does have about a third of a tank left in his car too from his normal fortnightly fill up if we get desperate but we would rather leave that sat on the drive in case of a real emergency on top of baby-related stuff.

If I hadn't managed to get fuel on Friday I would have been incredibly stressed over the weekend seeing how things have panned out, I'm not ashamed to say I panicked when my gauge went past 1/4 full which is my normal 'I'll fill up next time I'm going past a station' trigger anyway. Ordinarily we'd have just sat tight at home but that's the luxury of me being on leave, him being able to WFH, and having plenty of food etc in at all times now having learned from the events of the last 18 months.

EarthSun · 26/09/2021 20:52

I've a long journey this week (350 miles each way). I had been umming and arring whether to drive or take the train (I'd normally get the train but covid made me reconsider) - but think this has decided it for me!

maddiemookins16mum · 26/09/2021 20:53

Three of my team (of 12) have contacted me today to say they can’t come in on Monday as have no petrol. They live 6-8 miles away, we have excellent buses. I said I’m happy to be flexible with start/finish times but need them in the office (they cannot WFH).

wendz86 · 26/09/2021 20:54

I was meant to be driving to my sisters today but we got train instead. Will prob walk to childminders more this week, normally i would drive to drop kids. Depending on if i get fuel later in week will walk to gym friday. I have about 47 miles left so trying to save for any emergencies.

pourmeanotherglass · 26/09/2021 21:01

No I'll cycle to work as usual, as will most of my colleagues ( city centre hospital with no staff parking). I hope our patients make it in OK.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 26/09/2021 21:05

My poor dad is a Hackney driver in London. No fuel = no work = no money.
He's in absolute shreds about it.

Especially because he's currently in the NW with me (I've just got out of hospital..), he has enough to get back to London; but won't be able to work.

Then you've got people like one of my neighbours who only drives of a weekend, once in a blue moon, who has filled up both his and his wife's car - plus 2 Jerry cans each. He's openly admitted that it'll last them months. I said to him 'That's fantastic, wonder what my dad will do when he's got no fuel to work though?' neighbour replied 'Ach that's a shame'
He's lucky I'm so sore from surgery, I was a hair away from damaging neighbourly relations.

FreeBritnee · 26/09/2021 21:09

There’s no way they’ll allow that refinery to go bust in this climate. It’s to do with a huge VAT bill so the government will be coming to some agreement I’m sure.

DP managed to get diesel today with no queue so both of us have got enough to be normal for a week/2 weeks. Then we’ll just limp along with everyone else I guess while this shit show rumbles o.

FreeBritnee · 26/09/2021 21:10

on.

CosmicComfort · 26/09/2021 21:11

Likely have to cancel training Friday and just do my work hours. Have to do essential journeys only as have to get DS1 to Uni next Sunday, it’s 110 miles away. At the moment if I am careful, I can get there and back (I think), the plan beyond will be bike to work if I can’t get fuel.

I’m a nurse and do 12.5 hour shifts so a cycle ride on top is not a joyous prospect but won’t have a choice.

I am more concerned about colleagues who travel further, if they cancel their shifts all hell will break loose, wards don’t function without nurses.

whynotwhatknot · 26/09/2021 21:12

What selfish gits tinsel-who needs months and months worth of petrol in their cars just to sit there
