I normally drive to work, but am dusting off the bike for this week!

I managed to get some yesterday morning after being on the red. There were no problems getting it. I only put in what I need, didn't fill up to the top. My brother lives elsewhere, he managed to fill up to the top (£70) even though he doesn't work and lives in the town. He walks everywhere. He's left the car outside his house, and isn't planning on using any of it. He is part of the stupid brigade, taking excess resources, when he didn't need them. He did the same with food, during the first lockdown.

Yes, I will be allowing more time for the bus or switching to the tube as our local area has been gridlocked due to people queuing for fuel and blocking the roads

Tjsmjs · 27/09/2021 06:46

We’ve stayed very local all weekend to conserve fuel so we can get to work this week. I work in the NHS- I’m dreading us potentially being even more short staffed than usual. The ward is already short because of staff sickness.

We have a day trip planned later in the week, with tickets prebooked. We might have to cancel if we can’t fill up beforehand. It will be disappointing as it is to celebrate my sons bday as DH is deploying the following week and away for his actual bday. My son will know no different and we will find something local to do but it is money we’ve already spent.

So what happens 50 years from now when fuel runs out completely?

In 50 years infrastructure will have changed, there will have been time to plan, prepare and implement changes. It's nothing like the current situation.

Well I'd like to hope on 50 years we will have made changes to infrastructure and the way we live as we will have had approximately 49 years and 360 days more notice that there will be no fuel in comparison to the 5ish days notice we had before this situation arose.

It's a little bit of a nonsensical argument in relation to the current situation.

Fuel is not going to suddenly run out in 2 days in 50 years time it will be a gradual process of changeover over the years so not relevant to this thread about plans in the next week or so, maybe start your own thread.
RoseAndRose · 27/09/2021 07:07

In 50 years time, it will be 41 years since the last new petrol car was sold.

I think things will be rather different by then.

beautifullymad · 27/09/2021 07:12

We've spent hours driving and queuing from station to station yesterday as we have a 350 mile trip to get home to our children today. Mild panic set in yesterday after the fourth empty station with no diesel. Luckily we found a smaller station on the outskirts limiting fuel and over a few hours we filled up there. I had the train route planned out in case I had to leave my husband until he could get fuel and get home to the children. The train is possible it just takes so much longer and costs three time the amount of driving up so it's never a practical option.

WindBlowAutumnDays · 27/09/2021 07:19

How many times did you go back and forth to this petrol station? Did you take a few pounds with drive home then an hour later go back and carry on until your tank was full?

bonbonours · 27/09/2021 07:19

My (teen)) kids got the train to their activity which I'd usually drive them to. I'm now considering making that the norm as their school commute ticket covers it.

From an environmental point of view, people who can walk or bike to their destination probably ought to be asking themselves why they usually drive. It's mostly habit. I got in a habit of cycling to school with my son unless pouring with rain. And my kids have from the start, walked to the station to go to school where a lot of parents near me drop them there. Maybe take this opportunity to change your habits.

narkyspirit · 27/09/2021 07:33

it should all be back to normal in the next few days, people panic buying because of the media.

I am working in different locations this week, mostly with a commute of 80ish miles daily, I have a 1/3 tank of fuel, am I concerned? No!!

This week the media will predict a shortage of something else people will decide they can't possibly live without, so brace yourselves for that.

Well that's no help today though is it? 😂

I have just under a quarter tank. I can work from home luckily but I need to go into the office Thursday so I'm hoping I can get some by then. I also didn't want to add to the problem. I can probably use public transport at a push but it'll take longer to get there.

What a shit show eh?

RoseAndRose · 27/09/2021 07:39

@CandyLeBonBon

No of course it isn't.

I was responding to the poster who asked So what happens 50 years from now when fuel runs out completely?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/09/2021 08:24

have to go back to horse and cart!

rosesarered321 · 27/09/2021 08:38

Were on holiday in Northumberland and at the moment we're OK. We've changed our plans on what to do, to things that are very local.

Or back up plan is to leave the car up here and take the train home and collect at a later date. But I hope and don't think it will come to that, I'm not going to spoil my long awaited holiday by worrying about it.

DinosApple · 27/09/2021 08:39

I've cancelled my flu vaccination as a) I feel shit, and b) it's 40 miles round trip.

Luckily, I have enough fuel to get to the nearest PCR test centre (28 mile round trip). We both work walking or biking distance luckily and kids can get the bus.

RumHoney · 27/09/2021 08:40

I am trying to sit tight until the weekend. I have half a tank (filled up 2 weeks ago but don't drive that much due to doing a couple of days per week WFH and cycle commuting about half of my office days). We stuck to our plans at the weekend which involved a bit of driving. Today is the only time I need the car this week, I'm in work and have another 10 miles to get home. The roads didn't seem any quieter than normal.

I will need fuel for longer trips on Saturday and sunday. Part of me is tempted to get some on the way home if I see some rather than going out specially for it on Friday, but then I'd be adding to the problem so I will try to sit tight. Worst case scenario we can get the train on Saturday, although my dad who I'm meant to be giving a lift will no doubt whinge. Sunday is just us but not doable by public transport.

insancerre · 27/09/2021 08:48

I don’t drive so I have no need to buy any petrol
I walk to work
Dh has a hybrid so a tank full lasts ages as he is working from home
Luckily he filled up last week before all this chaos started
I feel quite lucky not to be affected, seen lots of posts from people worried about how they are going to get to work. Sad reminder of how much people rely on their cars

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 27/09/2021 09:07

I managed to fill up this morning, twenty minute line. I had literally nothing in the tank and I live in a village that has two buses a day so the sensible option is a full tank really-but I still feel a bit guilty.Surely everyone must have panicked that's going to panic by now and it will die down?

greenlynx · 27/09/2021 14:02

We had less than 20 miles in ours last Friday so went to fill up before weekend (DD’s got 2 activities on Saturday) it’s surprisingly quiet and no queues. However we decided to stay at home on Sunday to save fuel as we’ve got DD’s college, clubs and 2 upcoming hospital appointments this week.

Scoobygang7 · 27/09/2021 14:19

OK he's just got back off shift and they're having to set a max spend. Not because there's a fuel shortage but because of the increased demand. They've put delivery order in but it won't arrive til Wednesday.

Yet again distribution centre has fuel as it usually does they don't have a shortage. They just have an issue with people panicking and emptying out the garages, which is leading to inability to transport the fuel to the garages. If people stop bloody panic buying it'd all run as normal.

Scoobygang7 · 27/09/2021 14:20

In ability to transport it quick enough, not that they can't transport it as normal.

DahliaMacNamara · 27/09/2021 14:41

We have enough petrol, just, for the things we need to do over the next few days, provided DH is allowed to go back to wfh. Shouldn't be an issue as he's working alongside overseas teams this week so isn't missing any vital office interaction.
Or so I thought, but DH has already done 80 stressed miles forgetting things at both ends and having to schlep back and forth, and now presumably work late due to time spent schlepping. Happy happy days.

MissCalamity · 27/09/2021 14:59

I have about 70 miles left which will probably last until this time next week, I'm going away this weekend but made the decision to go on the train last week so that's definitely a good move as I may have not been able to fill up.

I'm hoping all the panic buyers will have filled up within the next few days and it's all back in normal soon.
