I normally drive to work, but am dusting off the bike for this week!

We are going to Cornwall on holiday at weekend with caravan, I hope we don't have to pitch up at roadside on the way and make it there, but we don't come home for two weeks so it will either be over or shit will have really hit fan and I will be past caring

Orangejuicemarathoner · 26/09/2021 21:17

@maddiemookins16mum

Three of my team (of 12) have contacted me today to say they can’t come in on Monday as have no petrol. They live 6-8 miles away, we have excellent buses. I said I’m happy to be flexible with start/finish times but need them in the office (they cannot WFH).
buses might not be an option if they are already at capacity by the time they reach your employees. But walking might be an option, assuming no disability
Skysblue · 26/09/2021 21:18

Quarter of a tank left…

Local petrol stations have no petrol…

I’ll do a couple of short journeys that I’ve committed to but after that looks like I’ll be walking everywhere!! Hope things get better soon.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 26/09/2021 21:19

We have already had a lot of disruption and shift cancellations over the weekend

ItsAChalkengingWank · 26/09/2021 21:21

My sons school is 20 miles away. I drive him, so 80 miles a day and have quarter of a tank. Hoping somewhere has some on Tuesday / tomorrow

CovidinPrimary · 26/09/2021 21:21

If it’s not sorted by Tuesday I won’t be able to take DC to school unless DH takes unpaid leave (already waaaay into our savings due to furlough).

I work from home so could probably do a 15-16 hour day teaching DC from home and catching up on my work.

I have many fucking meetings and deadlines this week though. Thank you all selfish people who decided that they needed to top up on petrol because TEN garages didn’t have any.

Also really annoyed as I waiting for my electric car 😩

cheeseAnd · 26/09/2021 21:22

My dc will be off school because we can’t drive them in

CovidinPrimary · 26/09/2021 21:23

Ps I can’t walk to school, we go to a very small primary 4 miles away as wasn’t able to get into any of the two walking distance schools nearby a car is a must.

There isn’t even a footpath (rural school)

4 miles is doable, but not on a country road without a pavement. Can you use footpaths across fields?
kristplankook · 26/09/2021 21:27

I'm a social worker so may have to curtail my visits to urgent only and work at home. Not that different from early Covid days but at least then I had the fuel to make the longer journeys.

OrangeBananaFish · 26/09/2021 21:29

I live rurally with no other way of getting to work. However, I do have half a tank so that should see me through half the week (possibly longer). Surely things will either be better by then or we will be back to that time in 2001 (I think) when there was no fuel.

CovidinPrimary · 26/09/2021 21:31

I work as well, so even if I wanted to walk 16 miles a day to take DC to school that also means I have missed a lot of work. And no the fields don’t have right of way, we walk around here lots and know every path.

It’s so totally selfish of people and the media to react this way.

I have friends who are in home carers and don’t have fuel to make visits to vulnerable people

TroysMammy · 26/09/2021 21:32

I've got half a tank. Will be going out with a friend tomorrow and my DM starting immunotherapy on Wednesday and I'm taking her. I'm off work until the following Wednesday so I'm sure I'll be able to get petrol somewhere by then.

Gilly12345 · 26/09/2021 21:32

I think anyone with a brain should be looking to make changes for a while with the petrol situation, car share, walk and not take unnecessary trips etc.

Clickbait21 · 26/09/2021 21:33

I'm due to drive from London to Hull for a wedding next weekend and am worried. Can't afford to get the train.

Veryverycalmnow · 26/09/2021 21:34

I predict public transport will be busy and more cyclists on the roads!

Shellfishblastard · 26/09/2021 21:35

I am genuinely shocked to read this thread - I thought they said that there was no need to panic because there was enough fuel for normal use?

Have places run out because of the panic buying it because they have a shortage already?

Availableforbaking · 26/09/2021 21:36

I walk or cycle locally anyway most of the time, it’s amazing the number of people found here still making completely non-essential journeys - lady who parked outside my house on 3 separate occasions today to walk your dog I’m looking at you!

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 26/09/2021 21:38

@whynotwhatknot

What selfish gits tinsel-who needs months and months worth of petrol in their cars just to sit there
I've been here 4 years and I've seen them drive those cars a handful of times. They walk/cycle everywhere and genuinely don't need that amount of fuel. My dad said to him 'don't go bragging about that mate, desperate people do desperate things.' And it's so true!!

Horrible people. First to panic buy toilet roll, pasta, hand soap and sanitizer when covid hit too.

@WindBlowAutumnDays

I regret being a decent person and thinking of others. I got petrol when there were no ques after hearing the initial news that there may be a problem, I guessed it would cause panic buying, I had little fuel so only bought a little more to not run out until the rush sorted it's self out, now 90% of the petrol is gone and a refinery is going bust. I now have a crisis not of my making that requires a tank plus of petrol and all I have is a little. I regret not filling to the top like others now.
I feel a bit the same as you Past some petrol stations on Saturday with queues but not too bad and had a bit of fuel so thought I won’t get swept up in the panic and make things worse, but now here we are and my town is completely out of diesel. I need to get the kids around and get to the office.
MilduraS · 26/09/2021 21:44

Fortunately not. By happy coincidence I filled up shortly before this kicked off and petrol usually lasts about a month (only go in two days a week, car is a tiny 1litre engine). I have a 20 minute drive down the M1 so cycling isn't an option and public transport is about 2 hours. DH hasn't been so fortunate and only has a quarter tank so might need to use my car on the days I'm off.

Im in the same position, I have about 200 miles in the tank thank god but it won't lasting with school runs for my daughter and getting to and from work. My husband is a lorry driver and luckily has a full tank to get to work.
VicSynix · 26/09/2021 21:44

My DP is meant to be having an operation on Thursday. We've got just enough petrol to get to the hospital for the PCR test, then to take him in and collect him. But seriously worrying that it will be cancelled because the staff can't get there. Very, very pissed off with people right now.

Oh, and my job involves visiting elderly and vulnerable people in their homes. Perfectly happy to walk to the ones in town, but the ones in the villages will just have to wait if this doesn't get sorted.

Garages order when they're at a certain level. After knowing your usual usage for time of year and that for the area, you generally have a fair idea of how much you need.

An unexpected increase of purchases like this means they can't get an order in any quicker.

Kind a like those of us with oil heating we know when we're going to need a fill, but it takes up to 5-7 days for delivery.

Similar here - my driving instructor was also being decent by filling up on Friday (when needed) and presuming he'd be able to fill up further on the way. Everywhere else has now run out, he's cancelled all of today's lessons and has tomorrow on hold. He's got pupils taking tests (including me) this week and if he can't find any petrol there go the tests.

My saving grace is that I insisted on getting a house near the tram, so I can still go out and about :D
