I normally drive to work, but am dusting off the bike for this week!

I used a bus today and will do again for the rest of the week
Pain dropping the kids off but need to save what fuel we have for emergencies and if it stops raining I'll use my bike 🚴

myheartskippedabeat · 27/09/2021 16:15

@EmmaStone

I've got about a quarter tank left and need to commute for the first 3 days of the week (which also serves as getting the children to school). We live rurally, there is no other option besides driving, and we also don't have many petrol stations locally - I did a 20 mile round trip today and all the forecourts (the 3 'local' petrol stations) were closed (Tesco's open for emergency vehicles). I'm hoping things sort themselves out a bit in the first half of the week. Although with government all living and working in London, I guess they're not that fussed 😡.

I've got a friend due to start a 15 day course of radiotherapy this week terrified she won't be able to get to hospital due to the shortages. Puts things into perspective.

@EmmaStone

Tell your friend to phone oncology at her local hospital and ask for TASL ambulance assistance - they have been priorities for fuel in Lincs and Notts and I'm sure other areas too and ask for their help
I hope she gets sorted

@ItsAChalkengingWank

My sons school is 20 miles away. I drive him, so 80 miles a day and have quarter of a tank. Hoping somewhere has some on Tuesday / tomorrow
Is there anyone you could car share with?
Ratched · 27/09/2021 17:58

Well, I got my radiotherapy today. I caught 3 buses there, 3 back.
I left home at 9:00 and got back at 4:35pm.
I am on my knees with exhaustion. I am not going tomorrow, I just can't face it. Will try getting some fuel again, 8f u can i will go. If not fuck it.

Ratched · 27/09/2021 17:59
  • if I can go

Sorry

TuftyMarmoset · 27/09/2021 18:24

Nope, I don’t have a car anyway. I live in a big town with really good buses and rubbish parking.

Flowers do you mean you would miss radiotherapy tomorrow? I'm sorry to hear that. Can you find anyone to help you?
Ratched · 27/09/2021 19:21

@lannistunut sorry, that was a bit garbled.
Yes. I will try for fuel in the morning. If there is none, I won't go, I just can't. I have never felt so bone tired.
I don't know anyone who could take me. Friends work, my brother is abroad, other family miles away.
I'm just tired. Will be okay in the morning🙂

Nidan2Sandan · 27/09/2021 19:32

I live rurally with no bus route to be kids schools and it's a fast country road with no paths so cant even walk them there.

Luckily we filled both cars before the shit really hit the fan, but we would have filled them both up on that day anyway so not panic buying just doing our usual.

I can wfh and DH cycles and gets the train so we can cope there, but I'm worried about the schools situation.

How long can this last realistically? I mean, eventually people have to all have enough fuel to stop all going & buying up at once and the petrol companies will catch up. Surely!! A week, two??

I hope you can get there tomorrow! Will send you good petrol vibes!

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 27/09/2021 21:12

@FortunesFave Agree, they should get priority!!

But unfortunately, not many others do.

choirmumoftwo · 27/09/2021 21:15

We need to drive from Lands End to Newcastle via Cardiff and Lancaster over the weekend. We have about a 450 mile range in the tank. Not sure we'll make it without a refill.

BigRedDuck · 27/09/2021 21:28

My boss cancelled our meeting this week as he was worried I wouldn't get the kids to school after driving there and back.
We have just under half a tank of diesel in both cars. They will likely have to be siphoned into DHs van so he can get to/from/site to site at work. Otherwise there really will be food shortages. I'm lucky enough to work from home but the kids need driving to and from school due to distance and lack of footpaths (rural).
We might have to start pooling lifts with the neighbours although their kids go to different schools. Hopefully this will be over before we have to worry about that though.

Have managed to get fuel today, had to leave work mid shift to queue at the fuel station opposite. Took 30 mins to move about 200 yards.

I’m a nurse so really need fuel to get to work. So grateful to my boss for letting me go during work time. Starting at 7am and finishing at 19;30 does not give you a lot of time to source fuel!

Why does being a nurse mean you really need fuel to get to work?
HarebrightCedarmoon · 29/09/2021 22:54

I got fuel today before car went into the red, so with my normal pattern of fuel-buying. But I didn't get a full tank as I normally would as some pumps were closed and there were lots of other cars behind me.

To look after sick people maybe?

lannistunut · 30/09/2021 06:36

@TheHouseILiveIn Why does being a nurse mean you really need fuel to get to work?

Confused what kind of a stupid question is that?

Pretty hard to care for patients from home, obviously, and pretty unsafe to leave patients without care.

Kintsugi16 · 30/09/2021 06:45

So frustrating (elderly)
I spoke to a family member last night.
FM: “did you manage to get petrol”
Me: “yes but it’s taking me ages to get to work as roads are blocked with people queuing”
FM “good, and I suspect you will be keeping it ‘topped up’ like everyone else”

NO, no I won’t!

It's not a stupid question. Being a nurse doesn't 'make' you need fuel.

CosmicComfort · 01/10/2021 08:09

I’m not sure this really needs explaining but as a nurse that starts work at 7am, there is no public transport available to get me to work at that time and it would take me approx 1.5 hours to get home via public transport at the end of my shift which is 12.5hours later. Not all of us live in areas with excellent public transport!

Agency Colleagues travel 50+ miles for work and won’t be able to do that if they can’t get fuel which means I don’t get to go home because there will be no one to cover the shifts.

Frontline nurses have no option to work from home and wards cannot run without nurses.

lannistunut · 01/10/2021 19:32

@TheHouseILiveIn

Do you not consider it important for nurses to attend their workplace Confused

I think you're being a little bit silly on purpose.

I see what @TheHouseILiveIn is saying.

Unless you drive for a living, you don't need fuel. You can be a nurse if you don't drive.

I hate the opinion that 'I work for the NHS so I NEED fuel' - my dad is a taxi driver, he needs fuel.
He can't get to work in any other way, can't work from home, can't cycle/walk..
