Unusual foods that you self medicate with

I’ve just had three coffees to fight through the flu fog - it worked! That got me thinking- I always eat rice for a stomach upset, garlic and honey for a cold etc. What unusual foods do you use to cure your ailments?

Not really unusual but I regard boiled or steamed green cabbage as health on a plate. If you're a bit run down? Cabbage. Toothache? Cabbage. Virus? Cabbage. I'm like the Donald Trump of Big Cabbage.

Bacon and honey sandwiches when I have a cold and sore throat, plus icecream. Works, but I'm a lot fatter after a few days!

Peppermint tea or polos at early stage of a headache.

Very cold Guinness for a sore throat.

I will definitely try the cabbage! Bacon and honey I would eat just because 😁

I’m coming to the end of an awful cold and it was made only bearable by eating a box of Hot Tamales sweets (spicy cinnamon jellybeans?). Probably more due to the sugar content but it worked a treat. I definitely recommend it.

Salted crisps and full fat coke
(Aka Chav dioralyte!)

MintyGreenDream · 25/09/2021 10:30

If I have a cold I get drunk! I find that once you're pissed the cold symptoms go away and don't return the next day either.

Luckyelephant1 · 25/09/2021 10:33

If I feel a cold coming on, lots of orange juice and berocca. Seems to prevent the cold becoming full-blown

leavesthataregreen · 25/09/2021 10:34

I used to suffer from long term depression. When it came on, I'd start eating my body weight in marmite on ryvita. I think it was a craving for B vits which lots of depressed people lack.

Now I do a lot of physical exercise, I find I crave protein every day which I never did before - eggs and natural yoghurt and lots of meat or fish. When I was a couch potato I could go for days without wanting protein.

Wasn’t the supposed Scottish cold cure mentioned in the book whisky galore?

Take a bottle of whisky to bed, hang your hat on the bedpost. Drink the whisky till you can see two hats. Go to sleep, and wake up feeling either a lot better or a lot worse.

Mrsjayy · 25/09/2021 10:36

I seem to have had the cold from hell it's been gawd awful I've survived on toast on Jam tea and hot orange juice.

Black radish for any kind of cold, especially sore throat & coughing. Works WONDERS!

Underamour · 25/09/2021 10:44

Definitely raw, cut + honey on top. Wonders, I swear. It's not that terrible, either. My grandmother has taught me as a kid!
lightand · 25/09/2021 10:47

Cramp - milk
Long covid - elderberry, chilli
Sore throat and anything cold related - tropicana with bits
upset stomach - coca cola, or if really bad, plain bread and crackers
bowel movement - liquorice, bran, brown bread

I am a vit C and green leafy veg person for most things

Lunaballoon · 25/09/2021 10:49

Hangover - marmite on toast with a cup of tea

Fuckitsstillraining · 25/09/2021 11:13

I make Kefir and take it daily but increase the amount if I'm feeling poorly or on medication particularly antibiotics. If I go a week without it I certainly miss it. I don't use the commercially produced stuff, it's usually full of sugar and has less probiotics and even the ones it has are added artificially instead of naturally occurring through the fermentation process.

PermanentTemporary · 25/09/2021 11:18

@BlackAlys well I've put it in a lighthearted way but yes I do believe that green cabbage is good for me. It's an inexpensive green vegetable available all year in the northern hemisphere.

I've remembered that I used to get mouth ulcers in my 20s and when that happened I would switch from cereal for breakfast to wholemeal toast and Marmite for the B vitamins. From my 30s onwards I usually have eggs for breakfast, no mouth ulcers for a couple of decades.
