Nice hotel and less spending money or not as nice hotel and more spending money?

Going to Newcastle next Sunday for a day shopping /food/cocktails etc
I have a dilemma
1.stay in malmaison hotel and it's £95 for a double room
Or
2.stay in easy hotel for £35 for a double night.

What would you do?
Both on the quayside and good locations but obviously option 2 is v basic

Had too many bad nights in cheap hotels and refuse to do it any more. Last cheap one we stayed in had loo roll like sand paper so had to go and buy our own.

  • Double room not night

How much time will you be spending in your room?

TBH £95 for Malmaison is a bargain.

Probably not a lot.
More if it was a nicer hotel with bar etc

The easyhotel is awful, is there any availability at the Travelodge or the Copthorne?

breallyyy · 23/09/2021 19:58

Lots of availability everywhere for the Sunday.
There's a new hotel
Innside by Melia (I think it's called )
That's showing as £77 for double room with river view

You could think of a vague budget for the weekend and what you'd spend the extra £60 on it you stayed at the Easyhotel. Does it feel worth it?

womaninatightspot · 23/09/2021 20:01

I really liked Malmaison stayed in a few and they always have lovely beds. I'd probably splurge on the hotel as am too old to stay in rubbish ones

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/09/2021 20:02

You'll need your sunglasses for an Easy hotel. Its rather orange...

We stayed in the London one. All we did was sleep there. It was fine.

Honeyroar · 23/09/2021 20:03

I’d pick something in between. Have a look at booking.com and scrutinise photos to get a good idea?

bonfireheart · 23/09/2021 20:09

Agree about choosing somewhere in between. Also ask yourself what you want from a hotel, just a bed or a bar too etc? £95 for malmaison is a good price though.

bonfireheart · 23/09/2021 20:10

Hampton by Hilton with breakfast in Newcastle next Sunday £63 on booking.com

StarryStarrySocks · 23/09/2021 20:12

Malmaison 100%. Breakfast was great when I stayed in one. Do you even get breakfast in the Easy Hotel?!

cookingisoverrated · 23/09/2021 20:12

I'd rather have more spending money, tbh. How much time are you planning to be in the room?

Comefromaway · 23/09/2021 20:13

I’d go in between. Premier Inn or Travelodge. I wouldn’t stop in EasyHotel unless I absolutely had to.

You have to pay extra for the TV remote control!
DENMAN03 · 23/09/2021 20:14

£95 for the Malmaison is a bargain and it will be streets ahead of the £35 room. I would expect to pay up to £200 a night for one of those ! I would spend the extra.

caringcarer · 23/09/2021 20:16

When we want a few nights away in England we almost always stick to Premier Inn or Travel Lodge as you know what you will be getting for yours money. Occasionally if book in advance manage to find a Group deal on nice hotel with spa and grab it whilst it's on offer. If you are not spending much time in room, can't think why you would if shopping weekend then go cheaper on hotel but not too cheap.

Squirrelblanket · 23/09/2021 20:28

Melia hotels are lovely!

I think it depends how much time you want to spend in the hotel as how much time you will be "out on the toon" as it were. There's a lot to do and see there.
chickenandchipsinabasket · 23/09/2021 20:32

If you want a really really lovely spa hotel with fantastic comfy beds, pool, jacuzzi, two pubs in the beautiful grounds I can recommend a 4 star one but it's about 30 mins away in Morpeth!!

Acunningruse · 23/09/2021 20:33

Go for the Maldron Hotel. 4* but v reasonably priced.

Ohshittt · 23/09/2021 20:33

Try the Vermont but via their website. Lovely hotel we live fairly local but our yearly one night escape from the kids is to stay there. What are you planning on doing in Newcastle? Loads of cheap and cheerful bars and restaurants 😊

Linden Hall? I can't think where else!
Ohshittt · 23/09/2021 20:36

I don't believe Malmasion has parking either? Bare in mind you will have to pay extra for that as well if you stay somewhere without parking.
