You should cut your hair short, now that you're 40

Is this a thing?

My mother (age 75) has just informed me that I should cut my longish hair short now that I'm over 40. Or is this a generational thing, mum and her friends have all had short hair for as long as I can remember. My friends tend to wear their hair longer (even those over 40 Smile).

It doesn’t have to be short, a chin length or collarbone length bob is fine.

Don’t forget skirts on or below the knee please. No leather, and no one wants to see your cleavage,

Wink

I've heard this before. It's so outdated. Just wear your hair how it suits you. And if you like ripped jeans, then wear 'em! Wear what you're happiest in and fuck everyone else!( in the nicest possible way of course....Grin)

66 here. Have long hair which I heave dyed dark purple.

My hairdresser convinced me to try it and she was 109% right, taken years off me and makes me feel younger 😊

Anybody doesn’t like it then tough tit 😂

Frogsandsheep · 22/09/2021 23:37

I’m in my early forties (although I look quite young for my age) and have hair extensions!

I think I suit long hair and have no intentions of cutting it.
It depends on the individual - both what they like and what suits them.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 22/09/2021 23:43

My hair is nearly to my waist (thanks to lock down!) I wear it in a plait most days. I’m 55. I’ve also stopped colouring it (again mainly lockdown) and it actually looks better as the strands of silver make it look lighter.
Long hair suits me and I’ve no intention of cutting or colouring it and having to go back to hairdressers every 6 weeks

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 22/09/2021 23:45

Fuck that noise!
I'll be 50 next year, I've been going grey since my late 20's. My hair is long. I cant be arsed to pay to have my hair cut.
If anybody has a problem with my choices that's up to them.
The one thing I will never do though, is follow in my xmil's footsteps and wear miniskirts and heels, long after she should just because her husband liked it.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 22/09/2021 23:46

Have your hair how you think it suits you.

Short hair and bobs aren't bad. Some women, including me, look much better with short hair than longer. It's not letting yourself go, or giving in to ageing, to have hair above your bra strap. Mine's always been between shoulders and pixie since I was a teenager. I've seen women with long hair all just hanging there that would look so much better a bit shorter. But, it's up to them how they prefer their hair.

Lookingoutside · 22/09/2021 23:47

I love my hair. Not a chance!!!

Coyoacan · 22/09/2021 23:48

I think short hair looks gorgeous on some women, but I do not suit it at all, so I'll getting on for seventy with long hair.

Back in the day, a 28-year-olf friend of mine was told that she was too old for long hair.

Charlize43 · 22/09/2021 23:55

I'm 50s and love my long grey hair. I think it all depends on how comfortable you are with your age and also what suits you, long or short. I don't want to look in my 30s, because I'm in my 50s. I'm actually looking forward to it going whiter. Tell your mother to check out Eveline Hall!

Balls to that! I started growing mine in my late 30s and have zero intention of ever cutting it again!

rosegoldwatcher · 23/09/2021 00:16

In the 70s, where I was brought up, swathes of women wore their hair short and permed once they were no longer in their twenties.

Pubic curls.

MyPatronusIsACat · 23/09/2021 00:19

Mid 50s here. Hair 3-4" below my shoulders and (dyed) blonde - natural colour mousy. Like fucking HELL will I ever have it bastard short!

lemmein · 23/09/2021 00:25

I wonder if J-Lo's mum tuts at her long hair? 🤔

GTAlogic · 23/09/2021 00:25

Mine's almost waist length and I'm 41. Yes it's going grey but I'm not bothered: I like grey hair. I'll keep it this way for as long as I feel it looks nice.

haba · 23/09/2021 00:26

@MarleneDietrichsSmile

Generational Grin

My mum has kept on about my hair being too long and childlike for someone of my advanced age since I was 35 (15 yrs ago)

She says it makes me look lanky and younger, and that is not a good look for a woman of 50 Grin

I just nod and smile

Mine's down to my waist- I wish it did make me look lanky! (I'm 5'0", mid-40s) There's a lady lives near me who I have seen for past twenty years, so she's probably about 70 now, and has white knee-length hair- it's amazing. She does look lanky though! Grin Probably because she's about 5'9"
YourFinestPantaloons · 23/09/2021 00:29

Fuck that.

I'm 100% gonna be one of those elderley women with a long white plait running down my back.

haba · 23/09/2021 00:29

And MIL has grown her hair out over lockdown and it looks stunning- makes her look like Jane Goodall (she's similar age).

KurtWilde · 23/09/2021 00:33

I'm 45, masses of long wavy black hair (no sign of grey yet!), no way in hell am I cutting it. It suits me, for starters, also it's absolutely no one else's business how I choose to wear my hair! So weird that people think they should have a say in it Confused

BasiliskStare · 23/09/2021 00:40

I have had mine cut ( I am late fifties ) to shoulder length , from bra strap length & I actually prefer it ( on me - just my choice ) but what I absolutely love are those 50s 60s hairstyles which are quite a bit shorter - so e.g. Jackie O , Pussy Galore in James Bond - you get the gist - but I have never thought I was good looking enough to carry those off. Now I think I am going a bit shorter. (Brave me? ) But in no way do I think you have to have your hair cut just because ............ My neighbour is 85 - white collarbone length hair - Looks great on her. Especially with her Fedora. Grin

Strokethefurrywall · 23/09/2021 00:43

Fuck that. I'm 42 in October and my long hair is fucking fantastic.

I've done a short look like Sarah Hylands in Modern Family and loved that too, but actually it was far harder to look after. I work out a lot so I need long enough hair that I can tie back.

Driftingblue · 23/09/2021 00:49

Late 40s with long hair. Ive always wondered why almost all the women in my parents generation had short hair by my age.

SingingInTheShithouse · 23/09/2021 00:50

Pahahaha. GrinI'm 60 & my hair is almost down to my waist

Some people are weird like that though. I had a male long haired leather clad biker looking friend hit 40 & turn up the next day with short hair, clean shaven, tweed jacket brown cords & brown suede shoes & that was him from there on😐
