Someone please tell me I am bonkers

We are going to the coast at the weekend, staying in a nice hotel. The sea air, dog walks on the beach, fish and chips, the whole shebang because I know how to holiday :)

We are only going for a couple of nights.

Thank God they emptied the brown bin this morning because I am going to fill it. The garden is getting scalped, the house will be cleaned - I swear it will. Windows washed, clothes laundered, ironing basket emptied, beds changed because you always have to change the bedding before you go away don't you?
Floors washed, kitchen blitzed, bins emptied, bathroom will be hotel clean.
As we drive away I will be emotional.
Every time I go away I am like this. I turn into a maniac.
What is wrong with me people?

You're bonkers.

HTH! Grin

My mum always thoroughly cleans the house, changes bedding, clears all laundry etc. before going on holiday. It drove me mad as a kid because it spoilt the exciting build-up. Now, I just think she's bonkers to still be doing it Hmm

H1978 · 22/09/2021 13:38

I’m the same, have to clean the entire house and clean bedding to come home to.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 22/09/2021 13:41

Quite sane
Nothing worse than returning from holiday of Any length to a load of housework

EllieSattler · 22/09/2021 13:44

Coming home from holiday to a ton of housework is depressing. I'm not especially house proud but always do a big clean and tidy before a trip.

Atalune · 22/09/2021 13:45

I do this too. I LOVE coming home to a spotless house.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2021 13:46

I wouldn't want to come home from holiday to a messy house. That would be very depressing to me.

Daisy4569 · 22/09/2021 13:49

My mum does this before she goes abroad. She always phones before getting on a flight to say she loves us and she’s cleaned the house so she’s not embarrassed if something happens to them and someone has to go into their house!

onelittlefrog · 22/09/2021 13:51

I can understand why people do this - wanting to come home to a perfect house after a holiday is understandable.

But you do have to balance it with your sanity before you leave (and that of your partner/ family).

My ex was so obsessive about doing this when we went away that it actually became quite controlling and upsetting and it was detrimental to everyone's wellbeing.

If that happens then it doesn't actually add to the relaxation of a holiday, it just causes stress.

Crinkle77 · 22/09/2021 13:52

Nothing wrong with you. There's nothing worse than coming home to a messy house when you get back from your holiday. You can empty all your bags and cases without having to worry about the housework too.

Tal45 · 22/09/2021 14:09

I do a tidy up before I go so I don't come back to a complete mess. You sound bonkers but I'm just jealous.

Aposterhasnoname · 22/09/2021 14:13

Can’t tell you that, because I’m the same.

StoatMilk · 22/09/2021 14:18

You’re bonkers

Can I come and stay at your house while you’re away it sounds lovely? Grin

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/09/2021 14:20

I don't think I've ever had a spotless house!

CheesyWeez · 22/09/2021 14:23

Not bonkers. I'm jealous that you find the energy to do this (I have the will to do it but am always too busy with other stuff before a holiday). It will make your holiday all the more special to come back to a shiny house. Grin

And- jealous your brown bin is being emptied. Ours aren't! Mine's overflowing! No way I'm putting that now-stinky vegetation in my car to take to the tip myself. And no sign of a refund from the council of our brown bin charges either. Confused

Arabelladrinkstea · 22/09/2021 14:25

I’m a very messy person…. Until I’m going away somewhere and then the house becomes spotless!

Blindleadingtheblind · 22/09/2021 14:30

You're doing the right thing OP. Echoing what others have posted, you cannot come home to a mess, it just won't do.

I've been on a cleaning spree today and it feels great. Only a matter of time before the kids are back from school to ruin it Angry.

Christmas and new year is my time to shine. House gets blitzed before the decorations go up and then again some time between Christmas and the new year -as I am a control freak who can't stand clutter

HairyFeline · 22/09/2021 14:32

Nothing wrong with you by my book, OP 😄 nothing like coming back to a nice clean house.

Ellarain · 22/09/2021 14:33

I'm the same, blitz the whole house before I go away. Love coming out to a clean house and clean sheets on the beds.

GreySweater · 22/09/2021 14:34

I'm exactly the same. I literally leave for holiday by backing out of the house hoovering as I go! All beds changed, aero dishes, zero washing and all sinks / toilets bleached Grin

gannett · 22/09/2021 14:43

Surely the spotless sheets and everything would have just gathered dust after not being touched or moved for a week/two weeks?

Also if I return in the evening or later, I'm sweaty and dishevelled from travel (especially if it involves a flight) and so tired I just want to collapse in bed. The time to freshen everything up is the following morning.

FlatStanletta · 22/09/2021 15:05

I would love to leave my house clean and tidy but I can EITHER clean and tidy the house OR do the laundry and packing for 5 people including 3 small children. I can’t do both. And said small children will mostly be destroying any tidyish corner of the house while I feverishly shove things into suitcases. Our house always looks like a bomb has hit it as we drive away and most of the time when we are at home.

I’m in awe of those who manage to do both.

Metallicalover · 22/09/2021 15:11

I would hate to come home from holiday to an untidy house!
This Is why I do it I get soo stressed about this before I go away!!

Neonplant · 22/09/2021 15:17

I don't want to sound like a dick but I never have any idea how people have time for this. I'm always so but with packing, planning and finishing off stuff at work I couldn't have the house immaculate too. Maybe I'm lazy?!

TabithaTiger · 22/09/2021 15:29

I always used to clean the house before going away. Now the DC are older and stay at home when I go away, I purposely DON'T clean the house as I know it'll be messy when I get back!

teenagetantrums · 22/09/2021 15:40

I used to do this. Then a few years ago l pulled my back somehow dusting the skirting boards... couldn't walk for 3 days and missed a holiday..never again. Now l leave it basically tidy but no deep cleaning.
