Anyone fancy joining me for Ocsober?

If so, we could make this into a support thread and maybe list ideas for non alcoholic drinks, good films and tv programmes to watch etc.

Hi everyone, I'm a bit late to the party so to speak but I hope you don't mind me joining in. I have been drinking almost a bottle of wine a night for I can't remember how long but kidding myself it's not so bad as I dilute with diet lemonade (I only drink white wine). Just lately I have been feeling sore around my liver area so decided I need to do something about my drinking, I'm also very overweight so hope to lose a few pounds too.

I wonder if anyone has noticed any ill effects from not drinking? I have been getting really bad headaches and wonder whether it's because of no alcohol or if it's dehydration, although I am trying to drink more water during the day.

Anyway, onwards and upwards!

FanGirlX · 06/10/2021 14:40

I had a bit of a stressful incident yesterday but I'm really pleased I didn't reach for the gin.

We rent at the moment and we got notice that the landlord wants to sell so we have to be out by Dec.

We are thinking of trying a different area, so this kind of forces our hand.

Hi all would love to join this thread, seems very supportive. Another NHS nurse here which makes me feel awful, as I know first hand the consequences.
My amount would vary sometimes days/weeks without wine then nearly every night. One is never enough.
My routine bloods have shown low B12 and folate so need to get them checked again, really worried it is because I have liver damage.

Trying to keep myself busy with reading and walking. It does get tough but I need to do this. Keep going everyone.

FanGirlX · 06/10/2021 17:19

Evening Smile Struggling a little this evening, I got offered a great job today so normally would reach for the wine to celebrate. Trying to distract myself with my cross stitch and Mumsnet. Hope everyone is doing well today.

goldpendant · 06/10/2021 20:22

Congratulations @FrasierCraneDay - amazing!

I'm struggling too, really busy day at work, D.C. poorly, stressed! Almost caved at 6pm but battled through kids bedtime and feel ok now.

We've almost done a week everyone 👏🏻

goldpendant · 06/10/2021 20:23

Sound stressy @FanGirlX - we'll done for staying focused. You'll be better equipped to deal with the situation if you're clear headed and calm. Good luck finding somewhere new.

ZednotZee · 06/10/2021 20:37

Well done for sticking to your resolve under such circumstances @FanGirlX. I hope you find a lovely new home very soon.

I feel you @goldpendant on the poorly DC front. DD has vomited on the way home from brownies this evening, she's currently dozing on the sofa whilst I drink a ginger beer. DH is out playing football and I'm just about to do some laundry. Living the dream Grin

Well done @FrasierCraneDay its bloody hard to resist the tempatation but it does pass and then we can feel proud of ourselves.

Wow, a whole week tomorrow. Thats the longest I've been dry possibly all year.

Hi @Goatling and @Rupertpenrysmistress looking forward to chatting with you both as we navigate the month.

Goatling · 06/10/2021 21:17

Thanks FanGirlX good to be here.

Goatling · 06/10/2021 21:18

and ZednotZee.

IWanderedLonely · 07/10/2021 07:50

FailedSad. Sorry all. Wednesdays are always long stressful days and I hadn't planned my downtime. Back to day 1 today for me.

Goatling · 07/10/2021 09:22

Don't beat yourself up IWanderedLonely, it's a hard thing we are doing. Just draw a line and start again today, one day at a time is a good motto.

DotCottonsFag · 07/10/2021 09:27

This time last week I was getting ready to go out on a bender!

Woke up Friday with a hangover from hell! I need to keep reminding myself of that. I also had the odd bottle or 3 in the week after work - its looks glam but the next day I paid for it with a fuzzy head and puffy cheeks

7 days dry!! Lets do this!!

LowbrowVictoriana · 07/10/2021 10:53

Checking in, still dry.

Sorry you faltered, @IWanderedLonely just get back on the horse, you can make it a bit further, I know you can!

Belindabelle · 07/10/2021 11:32

@IWanderedLonely come on you got this, just ignore the blip and carry on. DO NOT carry on drinking over the weekend to restart on Monday. You can have another 4 dry days under your belt by Monday if you just keep on keeping on.

Sorry to hear about your mum @goldpendant. Fingers crossed for a good outcome and what a great idea to support MacMillan.

This thread is very helpful in terms of accountability. DH knows I am doing this but no one else. I think I am doing ok but I have been eating loads. I need to address that soon as the idea was to lose weight this month not gain. Another weekend looming and it’s the start of Half term too. Oh well!

30kgtogo · 07/10/2021 12:07

Keep going everyone! 1 week alcohol free today - like pp, the longest in at least the last year 👍

I am meeting a friend for long-overdue quick drinks this eve. Will try and keep going! However, if I cave, I’ll have one drink then go to tonic water, and not catastrophic enough about failing.

30kgtogo · 07/10/2021 12:08

Sleeping a million times better without alcohol - it’s astounding the effect just 1 drink has

FanGirlX · 07/10/2021 14:25

I hope I feel the benefits soon. Not sleeping well and feeling a bit groggy in the day. Think it's to do with my extra circumstances though.

OP posts:
30kgtogo · 07/10/2021 14:34

@FanGirlX, hope you sort your circumstances out. I’m about to put house on market - moving is so stressful!
Even if we’re not feeling benefits, there will be healing happening in our body

IWanderedLonely · 07/10/2021 16:52

Thanks all for your support & kind words.
I'm back on it today. I have to learn how to control the "fuck-it" button when I'm really stressed - that's the bit that's eluding me.

FanGirlX · 07/10/2021 18:06

I've just bought a weighted blanket and am looking forward to snuggling up with a dragonfly tea later.

I'd love a place to call our own. We just can't decide where to live though. Waiting for an announcement from work about what hybrid working will actually look like. Hate renting.

Thank you for your messages of support Smile.

30kgtogo · 07/10/2021 22:52

Well, failed dismally this evening out - a small, then a large glass of wine. We had a lovely catch-up, though.
I had lots of water when I got home, am now on tea, and will resume sobriety tomorrow 😬

goldpendant · 08/10/2021 08:22

Happy Friday! We've done it (mostly!), well done - even if you've cracked it sounds like it was a small slip up.

I'm pretty sure the stress will be making you feel rubbish @FanGirlX - it does all sorts of things to our health/head, it's all connected.

I'm going to celebrate one dry week with something yum tonight.

Was almost about to cave last night after another mammoth work day and kids still at home poorly, but actually, had something spicy and it distracted me. The need passed quickly after that!

FanGirlX · 08/10/2021 10:09

Happy Friday everyone!
