Anyone fancy joining me for Ocsober?

If so, we could make this into a support thread and maybe list ideas for non alcoholic drinks, good films and tv programmes to watch etc.

@IWanderedLonely

Please can I join you? I need a reset and being accountable to other people helps me massively when I do Dry January.
The more the merrier 😀

I’m in!
I did Dry Jan and found it tough meaning I needed it!
I’m away for the first weekend of Oct but will then be on it.

I know I’ll feel better for it and a nice break before all the Christmas booze

LowbrowVictoriana · 22/09/2021 19:43

@Ladywinesalot I think you may benefit from a namechange!

Maybe Ladydoesntwine for October, and Ladywinesoccasionally thereafter! Grin

Hahaha you’re right!! Grin

I did go sober for October a while back and I loved it! It's made my drinking habits change for the better and I can go weeks without a drink now. Schloer was awful, was to sweet. Blue becks was lovely. Graze, nuts and a bowl of Strawberries or banana and grapes often stopped my need to keep looking for something. By week two, it was a lot easier. Good luck mumsnetters!! Xx

Terzani · 22/09/2021 22:35

Sure, why not? Our livers, under eyes and jawlines will be thankful Flowers
And one basic tip to avoid alcohol in case of cravings (tried and tested when I gave up smoking): chewing gum or brushing teeth. Or both. And good hydration. Good luck!

Little bump in case anyone else wants to join us!

@Raffles1981I had a similar experience with Dry January a couple of years ago. I joined because of a thread on here. It transformed my relationship with alcohol, and probably added years to my life.

I hope those who came on just to piss on a support thread are still around to read your and my experiences of taking part in these "Dry" events... they really are helpful and worthwhile.

IWanderedLonely · 24/09/2021 21:32

I'm practising for next week by having a Beck's blue.Smile

Yes, absolutely agree. Those who showed up to piss on a support thread have no idea what they are talking about.

So I'm just back from a weekend away. I'm doing my shopping list for this week and adding lots of AF drinks to my list. So far I have got:

Clipper lemon and ginger tea (this brand has a good amount of ginger in)
Elderflower cordial
Sparkling water to go with the cordial
Lots of lemons and limes to make water taste nicer

Any other suggestions?

I'm also planning on taking a vitamin B complex and Omega oil capsule daily to try and replenish the vitamins that alcohol has taken away.

I like nice tonic water... the “light” ones by Fever Tree. They have some lovely flavours. I also have some nice posh “adult” cordials for occasional use, like Belvoir ginger... not every night though as they are sugary.

Peppermint tea and decaf coffee I also like to drink in the evenings. And Becks Blue. I’ve not found any other AF “booze” worth bothering with, though!

FanGirlX · 26/09/2021 18:01

@LowbrowVictoriana

I bet the fever tree light Mediterranean tonic is nice - ice cold with a few slices of lemon and lime. Added to my list, thank you.

I agree, the pretend alcohol isn't worth bothering with.

I was on the dry Jan thread and recall kombucha being very popular, I might try some of that.

I also love the London Essence pink peppercorn tonic with a squeeze of lime - yum.

Birthday weekend over now and kickstarting October with a detox retreat - cannot wait.

Same here 😁.

I'll see if I can get some kombucha. I've never tried it but now I'm intrigued.

I’m in!
Nosecco is good and Robinsons do a lime and mint cordial - add lemonade and it’s very similar to a mock jito

I’ve stopped midweek drinking and got into a bad habit but at weekends I crumble Blush

NotYourCupOfTea · 26/09/2021 19:51

as not and

FanGirlX · 26/09/2021 20:13

Some people like nosecco, I wasn't a fan.

Apparently Waitrose do a nice AF white wine but I haven't tried it.

I struggle to go to sleep when I'm not drinking at first so I sometimes have Clipper bedtime tea (can't remember the exact name). Not sure how much it helps but I enjoy it.

goldpendant · 26/09/2021 20:26

The best AF wine/fizz I tried were both from Waitrose, found them on a telegraph article... hold on....

goldpendant · 26/09/2021 20:30

These were the best I could find (and I tried loads!)

I discovered Clipper in Dry Jan, they have so much more flavour than the other herbal teas I've tried. Big fan of the lemon and ginger, will give the bedtime brew a go too.
