Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Favourite songs.

Whether solo or as a duo.

Paul Simon - Slip Sliding Away and Under African Skies.

Art Garfunkel - I Only Have Eyes For You and Since I Don't Have You.

S&G - The Only Living Boy In New York and A Hazy Shade Of Winter.

I confess I'm not a big fan of Paul Simon's solo stuff. By and large, the two were better as a duo.

Just amazing lyrics, more a poet really like Leonard Cohen (who was of course), Nick Cave and Tom Waits.

weegiemum · 21/09/2021 21:20

I love the line "Fat Charlie the archangel sloped into the room". (Crazy Love). It's just such an anything could happen next line.

I love Kathy's song, I have a 21 year old Kathy myself.

And Still Crazy After All These Years.

Graceland is one of my favourite albums and I especially like the the acapella start to Diamonds On The Soles Of His Shoes.

GrouchyKiwi · 21/09/2021 21:26

Love S&G. Favourites are

  • I Am A Rock,
  • America,
  • He Was My Brother,
  • The Sun Is Burning
  • My Little Town.

Haven't heard any of Garfunkel's solo stuff, apart from Bright Eyes, which I don't care for.

Love Paul Simon. Favourites are

  • Obvious Child,
  • the entirety of Graceland (one of my favourite ever albums),
  • Rene And Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War,
  • American Tune,
  • Late In The Evening.

The drums in The Obvious Child are just so perfect. They make me happy.

Clawdy · 21/09/2021 22:54

I'd not really heard the "Rene and Georgette Magritte And Their Dog" song till I saw Paul's concert a couple of years ago, and now I love it.

Mischance · 21/09/2021 23:06

MargaretThursday - indeed. And written when they were 20 - extraordinary.

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/09/2021 23:46

Paul Simon is a very talented musician and lyricist. I love most of his music, especially the Simon & Garfunkel and early solo stuff. Bright Eyes was one of the first singles I bought. I hadn't a clue who Art Garfunkel was, but we'd just been to see Watership Down.

@LifesNotDoneYet

Wednesday Morning 3am has always been my favourite. Closely followed by The Boxer.
@LifesNotDoneYet, I like version on Wednesday Morning 3am, but not the more up-tempo shouty one. Probably a good thing that I can't find that one on Youtube.

Probably my favourite version of one of my favourite songs, Scarborough Fair/Canticle, is the one S&G sang with Andy Williams on his show,

I still have my well-worn S&G LPs, but with nothing to play them on now.

LifesNotDoneYet · 22/09/2021 07:26

Yes that's the version I like! I love the close harmony and the guitar.

MoonriseKingdom · 22/09/2021 08:00

S+G
America - pleased to see all the love for it here
I love a lot of their songs but I would be more likely to put Paul Simon’s solo work on. Never really listened to any Art Garfunkel.

Paul Simon - all of Graceland but I particularly love ‘The boy in the bubble’.

Celticdawn5 · 22/09/2021 08:04

Paul Simon singing American Tune on Parkinson is a You Tube delight

Art Garfunkel : Watermark album was on constantly in my youth

MrsMariaReynolds · 22/09/2021 10:24

I grew up on Paul Simon and S&G music, so most songs really hit my musical sweet spot.

Fave S&G, too many to name, but I adore: The Only Living Boy in New York, The Sound of Silence, America, and I Am Rock

Fave Paul Simon: Hearts and Bones, Graceland, Further To Fly

Can't say I'm a fan of Garfunkel's solo stuff...

WildRosie · 22/09/2021 12:11

The 1981 Central Park concert was something of a triumph. Most of the songs had to receive new arrangements to suit the band and the outdoor venue yet they were, for the most part, almost as good as the originals. BOTW really needed a string orchestra but had to do without. Still quite good.

ssd · 23/09/2021 10:09

That version with andy Williams is brilliant, thanks for posting @2020isoverthankgoodness

2020isoverthankgoodness · 23/09/2021 10:38

@ssd, I have it saved on my TV and play it over and over, trying (and failing) to sing all the harmony lines in turn.

ssd · 23/09/2021 10:48

They are all just so talented.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/09/2021 11:03

@thesunwillout

S&G American Tune (live in central park) In fact that album is one of my all time faves.

S&G America

S&G Slip Sliding Away.

Paul Simon, Mother and Child Reunion.
Makes me cry.

Paul Simon, Hearts and Bones.

X

Me too, love Mother and Child Reunion.
the80sweregreat · 23/09/2021 12:39

I love Bridge over troubled waters.

Latenightreader · 23/09/2021 13:02

I bonded with my best friend over a mutual love of Simon & Garfunkel and The Archers. We always said we would go to a reunion concert if they ever did one, but couldn't afford it in the early 2000s. We did go to the Graceland 25 anniversary concert in Hyde Park which was incredible - one of the best days of my life. When the first notes of Sound of Silence shivered out (an unexpected encore) we just grabbed hold of each other and didn't let go until the concert finished. I've seen him twice more, once with Sting and the Homeward Bound final tour.

Favourite songs change depending on my mood, but the 59th At Bridge Song, Bleecker St, At the Zoo, A Most Peculiar Man, Hearts and Bones, Father and Daughter...

Boy in the Bubble is one I'm incapable of listening to just once, I always have to skip back to the start to relisten. 'Medicine is magical and magical is art...'

I always thought the line in the Boxer was 'just to come home from the war zone, seventh avenue'. I thought it was a really rough area selling drugs (the comfort) he had to fight his way through to get back to a tatty room.

Latenightreader · 23/09/2021 13:03

(I'm sorry, that was quite an essay)

Peggytheredhen · 23/09/2021 17:59

I think The Boxer is my favourite. Such wonderful lyrics.

Peggytheredhen · 23/09/2021 18:03

I also love the Horrible Histories Viking and & Garfunkel song Smile

Maskless · 23/09/2021 18:11

The live version of "Late in the Evening" is breathtakingly good!

Check it out!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 23/09/2021 18:16

@Peggytheredhen

I also love the Horrible Histories Viking and & Garfunkel song Smile
Yep, I found myself thinking of Horrible Histories doing S&G.

I love Sound of Silence. And Scarborough Fair. And… oh, bugger it, I’m just going to have to say pretty much all of their double act songs. Don’t really know many of their solo efforts.
