Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Favourite songs.

Whether solo or as a duo.

Paul Simon - Slip Sliding Away and Under African Skies.

Art Garfunkel - I Only Have Eyes For You and Since I Don't Have You.

S&G - The Only Living Boy In New York and A Hazy Shade Of Winter.

I confess I'm not a big fan of Paul Simon's solo stuff. By and large, the two were better as a duo.

I love S&G. Sound of Silence and Hazy Shade of Winter would be my favourite.

The entire Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme album, played through in one go in order. Amazing.

I’m sad that the crafting of the album has pretty much gone.

Thank you @NapoleonOzmolysis. We often watch Sky Arts these days.

Preferred them as a duo. Homeward Bound is possibly my all time favourite of theirs, although the list of honourable mentions would be long.

Love S&G but I'm a huge Paul Simon solo fan.

S&G - not original but my favourite of theirs together is Bridge over Troubled Water because I think it makes the very most of their separate strengths. A very Simon tune and warmth but a barnstorming Garfunkel vocal.

Garfunkel solo - i only have eyes for you is a delicious track.

Simon solo/with others - so many but I love the whole of Still Crazy After All These Years as an album. My overall favourite song of his might be the Phoebe Snow duet Gone at Last.

OliveHenry · 21/09/2021 10:29

I've got a soft spot for S&G as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is my birth number 1.

I like most of their stuff, but I'm always struck by Silent Night/7 O'Clock news.

Love Simon & Garfunkle. I think my very favourite is America - there's something so wistful about it, 2 people setting out optimistically looking for the American dream but realising it's not really there. I also love Mrs Robinson, not sure why cos that's also about loss of innocence & the American dream (I think) but its my sing in the shower song.

I love Art Garfunkles voice - I bought Angel Claire when it came out & I still often listen to his version of Barbara Allen. Not so keen on solo Paul Simon; American Song from his first album is my favourite of his solo work.

TheSpiral · 21/09/2021 10:35

I used to play the cassette of Bridge Over Troubled Water so often as a teenager that it wore out. Paul Simon is the talent for me, he is absolutely and without a doubt my favourite singer songwriter ever. I can take or leave Art Garfunkel.
I would say my favourites are The Boxer, Hearts and Bones and Train in the Distance, but I love so many of them, and I love Rhythm of the Saints as a whole album although I wouldn't pick out a specific song as my favourite.

TheSpiral · 21/09/2021 10:36

Oh, I really like American Tune as well. The lyrics so often seem to fit the national mood.

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees

But it's alright, it's alright
For we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
Road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what has gone wrong

Dadvdtret · 21/09/2021 10:37

S&G - I Am A Rock, 59th Street Bridge Song, America, Homeward Bound
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al, Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Still Crazy After All These Years
Art Garfunkel - I'm not crazy about his solo stuff but I do like All I Know

Peggytheredhen · 21/09/2021 10:37

Ooh I have listened to S&G since I was born. I associate them with long summer holidays. Learned the guitar at primary and endlessly played easy versions of Homeward Bound etc. Then I listened to them endlessly at Uni and as a melancholic 20 something Hmm

I can't think of any other artists with such consistently brilliant songs. If I had to pick my favourite is probably Hazy Shade of Winter. PSR&T is an incredible arrangement though.

I don't rate either artist as much solo but I do love Gracelands. Call Me Al is an all-time favourite. I was also obsessed with the song Bright Eyes aged 7, not so much the film Shock

PermanentTemporary · 21/09/2021 12:29

Guess what Spotify is playing..

God Baby Driver is a good song. I always forget just how good they can be.

leavesthataregreen · 21/09/2021 12:46

I'm a massive fan of Paul Simon's solo stuff so the list is long.

Paul Simon: Still Crazy, Slip Sliding Away, Boy in the Bubble, Graceland, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, Wristband, How Can You Live in The North East?, Who's going To Love You When Your Looks Are Gone? Father & Daughter

S&G: America, Kathy's Song, For Emily, The Boxer, Sound of Silence, I am a Rock, Bridge Over Troubled Waters

AG: no idea as I don't know anything he sang solo except Bright eyes, which is good. But the only song i think he really does sing better than Paul Simon is bridge Over Troubled Waters. All the rest I prefer in Paul Simon's voice. It's not as pure but it has more soul and grit.

leavesthataregreen · 21/09/2021 12:49

When we went to NYC I actually booked tickets to Newark not La Guardia just so we could drive in over the New Jersey Turnpike and count the cars... Blush I am so in love with that song.

PermanentTemporary · 21/09/2021 12:55

Oh God leaves when I finally made it to the USA aged 20 my letters home were mainly Paul Simon lyrics Blush

Bridge over troubled water makes me very teary- mind you so does Elvis singing 'How great thou art'. Strange considering I am an atheist.

I love I only have eyes for you and Still crazy after all these years.

I have to ask..is that a joke, a typo, or are you genuinely mishearing “whores”? Grin
RonniePickering · 21/09/2021 13:46

Homeward Bound, I also love Paul’s live version on Parky.
And one about a horse coming on to someone, I forget the name 🤔

Clawdy · 21/09/2021 13:51

Are people joking about the horse on 2nd Avenue!? It's "whores".

PermanentTemporary · 21/09/2021 13:55

I assumed it was a joke!

CrotchetyQuaver · 21/09/2021 14:06

I love every single one!
It was also brilliant bedtime "going to sleep" music for my girls, from babies upwards. They love them too.

Loveatthe5anddime · 21/09/2021 14:10

Oh gosh you guys are my people!

My artist/album I’d take to a desert island
My artist/album that reminds me of childhood
My artist/album I’d like me kids to take from their childhood...

Everytime it would be a S&G album!

There is no other collaboration of artists that makes me nostalgic and emotive of the past before me, the soundtrack and memories of my childhood and the bible to grown up years well maybe Joni Mitchell

So so many favourites, Cathie’s song, The Sparrow, Crazy Love, America, Sound of Silence, Wednesday morning 3am, April she will come, Call me Al.

Very outing but I have a quote from Simon and Garfunkel’s Cathie Song and my eldest DD also has (very unusual) same name as one of Paul Simons DC...

The latter being absolute coincidence but which I sometimes like to think is is due to some kind of spiritual magic
