Why can I always smell burning?

It's doing my head in.

Like burning firewood for a few days now. I just assumed the neighbours were having a BBQ/bonfire/burning things but they were from what I can see.

@DoylyCarte

Not sure but once my friend’s dad could smell farts and drains all day and it transpired that during an 8am grass cut, he’d mowed over a dog shit and a large particle had settled in his moustache just under his left nostril.

Have you mowed near a bbq recently?

That's fucking hilarious 😂🤣😅😆
GemmaRuby · 21/09/2021 20:25

I’d do a covid test.
I’m assuming OP doesn’t have a moustache.

Petrarkanian · 21/09/2021 20:27

Any dried blood in the nose smells like burning. Could it be this?

Zeal · 21/09/2021 20:34

Tumour.

newtolineofduty · 21/09/2021 20:38

@DoylyCarte thank you for the BIGGEST laugh I've had in ages! Read that out to DP who similarly thought it was hilarious! X

Try Googling phantosmia, which is when people smell phantom odours. It’s to do with how the brain understands smells. I get it every now and then, usually burning (I had 5 people checking the wires in a meeting once) or sewage. It can’t ever be roses or baking bread can it? It usually goes after a while. Mine is caused by MS. Your doctor is unlikely to do anything unless it’s more frequent or there are other symptoms. Write down what the smell was and how long it lasted.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/09/2021 21:05

That signifies something specific, can’t remember what. GP will, though.

mineofuselessinformation · 21/09/2021 21:10

Do a sinus rinse before you trot off to the GP.
If it persists, then yes, see them.

freshcarnation · 21/09/2021 21:20

We had it and the fridge freezer was smouldering. Found out just before it caught fire

Shallwegoforawalk · 21/09/2021 21:50

@Zeal

Tumour.

Well that's just a ray of fucking sunshine isn't it? Confused

TiddlesUpATree · 21/09/2021 21:52

I have the same. It comes on a few days before period and also around the time I ovulate. It's bloody awful. Sure it's hormones.

Wombat96 · 21/09/2021 21:53

Yep, I'm smelling burning too. I haven't had covid, I don't think...

Every other house round here has fitted a wood burner & there's loads more road fumes pollution, so I was thinking it was real but DH can't smell anything.

Comedycook · 21/09/2021 21:54

You do need to see your GP about this

tomorrowalready · 21/09/2021 21:57

Lucky catch, freshcarnation. That's why I checked my kitchen when I had the burning metal smell though I knew I did not even have a grill pan to burn. It's when the smell goes with you wherever you go you know it's coming from inside yourself somehow. I must admit I do find being able to smell something so strongly that is not actually there fascinating. Partly it makes you aware how little we probably are perceiving about the physical world. And partly makes you think about what it means not to be able to smell at all. Do those who lose their sense of smell remember smells or is that lost as well?

CharlotteRose90 · 21/09/2021 21:59

Please please please see your GP. It can be down to sinus problems, polyps, a stroke and even tumours. Trust me I thought the same when I got it and it’s not covid . Mine is from nasal polyps and I was lucky. Go to your Gp immediately for a scan .

tomorrowalready · 21/09/2021 22:00

TiddlesUpaTree, I was the same , my sense of smell intensified so much before my period, especially for 'male' smells when out and about. It just added to my disgust with the world to be able to sniff it out even more.

WeatherwaxOn · 21/09/2021 22:01

@Runningupthecurtains

OP do you watch Ghosts? You could have your Mary "they smells the burnings"
Grin
museumum · 21/09/2021 22:02

Start with a covid test. Friends with it have described smells like burning rubber.

YourFinestPantaloons · 21/09/2021 22:42

Thanks all, I did have COVID last month!

Needhelp101 · 21/09/2021 22:58

Another vote for post Covid. I smelt burning meat, smoke etc many times afterwards.

Mykittensmittens · 21/09/2021 23:03

@YourFinestPantaloons

Thanks all, I did have COVID last month!
There you go!

Get the GP to check alternate possibilities just in case. I have had repeated sinus issues and when I get the burning smell know one is about to start. It’s so predictable I start using a nasal flixonase spray immediately and it lessens the outbreak.

Best to rule out the other stuff first though.

Crunchiedelight · 21/09/2021 23:12

I had it after Covid too. I lost my sense of smell for about 8 weeks and then when it came back I could smell burning all the time. So odd!

Covidwoes · 21/09/2021 23:18

Covid! I had it in November last year and often smell burning that DH assures me doesn't exist!

Talktalkchat · 22/09/2021 00:49

Bloody hell I was going to start a thread about this!

Most be covid.

mowglika · 22/09/2021 08:19

Have you had covid? A few months after I had covid I started smelling burning/cigarette smells. Particularly when I was stressed. Haven’t had it for a while now but randomly had it yesterday
