Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/09/2021 15:04

I need something nice o drink in the evenings.

I've cut wine down to weekends only.
Herbal tea seems to have joined black tea on the migraine trigger list
I can't sleep if drink coffee in the evenings
Trying to cut back on Diet coke, fanta etx
Tonic is also a migraine trigger

Which is leaving squash at the moment... but wanting something nicer!

Any ideas?
Thank you

Hot ribena

Yutes · 18/09/2021 15:07

What about some fruit in water. For example - some fresh or frozen strawberries or raspberries. Cucumber in water is quite refreshing.

I’m really enjoying Robinsons blackberry and blueberry diluting juice, as I am also trying to cut down on fizzy or caffeinated drinks.

Littleants · 18/09/2021 15:09

Depending on your personal taste, there is horlicks, ovaltine, Cocoa or hot chocolate.

If you are feeling really extreme, there is Bovril.

Good old tap water, which apparently is called council pop round here.

Mayhemmumma · 18/09/2021 15:11

I love a wine glass of sparkling water, with ice so I can pretend it's wine

AGreenerShadeofKale · 18/09/2021 15:12

I use fizzy water in a nice glass.

Lime, pomegranate or elderflower cordial with sparkling water.
Vimto with sparkling or still water.
Ginger cordial - hot or cold.
Apple juice with a dash of ginger cordial and sparkling water, with a sprig of fresh mint makes a great mocktail
Hot spiced milk: hot milk frothed up with grated nutmeg, cinnamon, a splash of vanilla essence and honey if you like it sweet.
Virgin Mary: tomato or V8 juice with tabasco, worcestershire sauce, lemon, celery salt and ice and a stick of celery.
Alcohol free beer if you want something savoury.

Soda water with a few slices of fresh lemon and lime and plenty of ice

Fentiman's rose lemonade is nice but very sugary so maybe more of an occasional thing if you are already trying to cut down on coke, Fanta etc

leavesthataregreen · 18/09/2021 15:17

Have you tried fruit teas not herbal ones? Twinings do some lovely ones. Can't see how they would trigger migraines.

AdaColeman · 18/09/2021 15:19

If it's to replace an evening glass of wine, tomato juice, elderflower cordial with water, or fruit cordials such as rhubarb, or the tins of French syrops (Teisseire) have some interesting gown-up flavours such as mojito.

Stroller15 · 18/09/2021 15:19

Appletizer, fresh orange and lemonade, water and lemon, ginger ale?

TheTeenageYears · 18/09/2021 15:20

When you say herbal tea do you include fruit 'tea' in that? Check the ingredients in them to see if there's a common ingredient which doesn't work for you but could be excluded if you check ingredients. I know many fruit tea's contain liquorish root which is really bad for anyone with high blood pressure but not always known about. Might there be something which triggers and could be avoided?

Sparkling water/soda water with fresh lime or elderflower cordial (or both).

Plain hot water (from the kettle with a splash of cold) surprisingly easy to drink especially in the winter when the thought of drinking cold or even room temperature water is unappealing.

I asked this sort of thing in the Christmas topic this week and got lots of responses. I'll try and find the link.

I agree about watching out for licorice root on labels. It's in herbal teas you wouldn't expect.

AviciaJones · 18/09/2021 15:30

Try Bickford’s cordial, my favourite is lime. It’s made in Australia and you can buy it online.

The Bottle Green squashes (and any others that are sweetener free eg Rocks) are very nice if you've only been drinking the Robinson's kind of squash so far. My favourites are Rubarb & Ginger and Plum & Apple. Great served hot in the winter too.
How about smoothies or fruit juices? You can get some very nice ones that are a long way removed from big names in taste. Still fresh lemonade is delicious too. If you have the time and equipment, they are even better made fresh. Freshly juiced watermelon in warm weather is a favourite here.
It's a shame tonic water sets off the migraines, as that would be another of my go-tos for when I've had enough of sweet stuff. I loved a tiny chilled can of Fevertree during my pregnancies.

@TroysMammy

Hot ribena
Why have I never thought of this!!
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/09/2021 15:35

Thanks for ideas.

With the tea... the truth is I have no idea how it triggers migraines. Its now black tea, green tea and peppermint tea. We think its tannin. Also affects a lot of wines.

Going to try fizzy water and fruit this week!

(I've had some Belvoir Farm drinks at parties and liked them)

(Its nearing hot chocolate season too!)

I find that a fancy glass makes all the difference.😂 🥂

Cameleongirl · 18/09/2021 15:37

I love squash ( barley water in my case) with fizzy water in a tall glass. It feels like a special drink to me.

brazenandstrange · 18/09/2021 15:39

I drank some of this with fizzy water the other night when waiting to pick teens up from a party.

It didn't taste like a kids drink at all.

Betsythecheshirecat · 18/09/2021 16:51

Kombucha! Some are really lovely.

Elderflower pressé.

Fauxito - lime and mint cordial (think Robinson's do one)… sparkling water / lemonade, mint leaves

I love a hot juice too.

MardyintheBoudoir · 18/09/2021 16:53

I always like a tonic with lime when not drinking.

Porridgealert · 18/09/2021 16:56

Milkshake. Whizz up a banana in milk. Add a spoon of hot chocolate powder. Chocolate banana milkshake. Delicious. Or just banana and a bit of sugar for banana milkshake.

SpittinKitten · 18/09/2021 16:57

Hell yes to hot ribena!
