Lost bank card & no money to get home! WWYD?

I'm away in a different city an hour away from home because I am working at a book festival over the weekend. I paid for lunch in m&s and a few mins later brought my purse out to use the cash machine and my card was gone! Sad m&s don't have it and found nothing when I retraced my steps.

What is the best thing to do...go to the police? Or just show up at the train station with my usual rail card, explain and hope they'll take pity on me?

Book a train ticket online and pay with PayPal or similar?

Choconuttolata · 18/09/2021 13:20

Is there a bank branch in the city that can help you?

catlovingdoctor · 18/09/2021 13:20

Call your bank ?

Lizzie523 · 18/09/2021 13:21

I will need to call the bank to cancel. The local bank itself is closed all weekend.

Some banking apps (NatWest at least) let you put in an emergency code to a cash point for money.

If you have card details saved on your phone could you buy a ticket?

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/09/2021 13:22

Call your bank and explain. They will cancel your card and can give you a way to get some money.

LateDecemberBackInLowB12 · 18/09/2021 13:22

Is there anyone you're working with you can transfer cash to and they take it out from their account?

I know some banks have a thing where you contact them and they can give you a code to use on the machine if you've lost your card and are in your situation as well.

Anyone who can come pick you up?

ChrissyPlummer · 18/09/2021 13:24

If you have any friends/relatives you can call, they can do what is called a SILK payment. They would need to go to their nearest station, explain where you are stranded and they can pay for the ticket there and it will be printed off at the station you’re at. Or, get them to book online and forward you the email with the pdf tickets attached.

If there is a branch of your bank where you are, they should let you withdraw money with some photo ID, like a driving licence.

Lizzie523 · 18/09/2021 13:24

@LateDecemberBackInLowB12 I've just met them all yesterday so I really don't think so. And no, I'm not asking anyone to come and pick me up. I'll just need to deal with this.

The sad thing is I've been so stressed that this meant to be a nice time out but clearly this has happened because I'm so stressed.

The bank can sort out an emergency cash withdrawal from an ATM when you report the card as lost.

NoSquirrels · 18/09/2021 13:25

Guess you didn’t buy a return ticket?

No card saved on your phone - ApplePay etc?

Friend or family you can ask to buy a ticket via Trainline and you print out at station? Someone you’re working with who can lend you money?

icelollycraving · 18/09/2021 13:26

Do you have Apple Pay? Can you buy tickets with PayPal?

AndTime · 18/09/2021 13:26

Just book a ticket online most mobile phones have our details stored or have google pay/Apple Pay

I very rarely use my card and even rarer use cash.

NoSquirrels · 18/09/2021 13:27

Asking a fellow volunteer (or the coordinator) for help would be fine, I think. The idea of transferring via bank app so they can draw out would work.

HalzTangz · 18/09/2021 13:28

@Lizzie523

I will need to call the bank to cancel. The local bank itself is closed all weekend.
There are 24 hour phone lines to cancel a card which you should do immediately especially if it's contactless.

If you have your banking app on your phone you can freeze the card that way too.

As for train, book your ticket online which is what you would be told to do if you presented without a valid ticket

Claudethecat · 18/09/2021 13:29

Who are you working for at the festival? Publisher? Can they help? If you are an author I bet one of the other authors will help or your publisher, it is a small world and everyone knows everyone IME.

StellaAndCrow · 18/09/2021 13:30

Hi I've lost my card a couple of times, phoned bank to cancel and they've always asked if I need any emergency money. Do you need us to look up any phone numbers for you?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/09/2021 13:34

You’ll need to call the bank - they’ll have a 24 hour number for lost cards. Don’t wait, you need to help the bank minimise their losses by blocking the card, incase someone tries to use it for contactless.

Then for your tickets home, it’s either Apple Pay/PayPal/get someone at home to let you use their details to book, or ask someone to lend you money, if your bank can’t give you an access code to get money without a code.

Lizzie523 · 18/09/2021 13:38

Hey all. I couldn't book a train online as they had none leaving until Monday but I successfully managed to book a bus ticket for the morning using my card details.

OP posts:
purplesequins · 18/09/2021 13:38

blocking the card should be priority!
most banking app let you do that easily and quickly.

my banking app has the option to draw cash from an atm. that has to be a anks specific one though in my case.

Lizzie523 · 18/09/2021 13:41

Usually it would be the priority but I had to buy a ticket first or I would haven been stranded.

Now that's done I can cancel the card. And try to enjoy the last day!

OP posts:
PeppermintMocha · 18/09/2021 13:47

but if you try apple pay or paypal - surely that is connected to the card itself, so the transaction will be declined?

Unless you do it before you report the card lost, which sounds potentially dodgy in case someone else is using it in that time.

Better to ring the bank and ask their advice on how you could get cash, or use a different card to book online if you have a family member who'd give you details or do it for you, or the thing where they buy a ticket at the station and it's printed out at your end.

Then on the journey home - see if you have money/points loaded on cards for things like coffee shops or boots to buy sandwiches or sainsbury's points or anything like that - you might have more 'money' stored on your phone in non-card places than you think

liveforsummer · 18/09/2021 13:49

Do you know your security code? When I forgot my card and had a whole shop at the till I quickly set up my Apple Pay as I knew the 3 dodger number it was quick and east

Mybalconyiscracking · 18/09/2021 13:49

Can’t you phone someone to come and get you, it’s only an hour?

liveforsummer · 18/09/2021 13:49

*digit not dodger 🙈
