Things you thought were normal/harmless until joining mumsnet

(Lighthearted )
lots of things that I thought were quite normal /fine/harmless before I joined MM seem to be quite abhorrent to a large percentage of posters. I often find myself wondering about whether my perceived normal is actually the minority. Some examples

Home made food or cakes - I bloody love home made cakes and think they are always nicer than shop bought - my first thoughts when offered one is usually yum, a cake! I've never given a moments thought to whether the person owns cats or dogs or has a hygeine certificate.

Ensuite bathrooms - I've got an ensuite bathroom. It's used for any instance where you may need a toilet. Apparently this is very very wrong.

Eating carbs

Bayliss and Harding toiletries - I would not be offended by this as a gift unless it was from my husband

(I'm with you on Thorntons though - they are nasty)

Answering the door to someone - if I see ex criminals selling stuff door to door, I dont answer, otherwise I dont have a problem with answering the door, and i get on with all of my neighbours.

Speaking to and socialising with work colleagues - i speak to, socialise (outside of work) and am friends with most of my work colleagues. I'd count many of them as friends. We buy each other birthday cards and presents and sometimes bring in cakes. (See point 1)

What are the things you've been educated on since joining MN?

I thought it was normal to not wear underwear underneath pyjamas. Apparently this is wrong and eww to quite a few on MN.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2021 11:59

@RedMarauder shockingly yes. He mentioned what my neighbour does for a living. I've lived there 12 years and hadn't worked that out!

I’ve never got this one!

I always picture these people like the never nude guy in Arrested Development showering in jean shorts Grin

I want to learn from the loo brush haters how they keep their toilets clean, please.

Really?! I genuinely had no idea about this one. I'm only wearing underwear with my PJs just now because I'm 31 weeks pregnant and have too much discharge so need to wear a pad at nights as well. Normally I just wear my PJs commando...

There's nothing wrong with home made food, en suite bathrooms, Bayliss and Harding or carbs.

I know nobody who thinks that.

Knittingupastorm · 16/09/2021 12:01

Having a washing up bowl is apparently far more disgusting than I could ever have imagined.

ButFirstTea · 16/09/2021 12:03

I didn't realise that it was a heinous crime to eat more than eg a single very small slice of pizza, or that having a snack at any time of day meant you were out of control with your eating habits.

DillonPanthersTexas · 16/09/2021 12:05

I thought 18 year olds while being eligible to vote, drive, drink and join the army still need a bit of support and guidance at times as they fully transition into responsible young adults. Instead, the moment they blow out the candles on their cake they need to start paying the current market rate in rent or even better move out while being 100% independent and magically gain the wisdom of an 80 year old.

Bbq1 · 16/09/2021 12:06

Or cocaine. Apparently according to MN "everyone" uses that too.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 16/09/2021 12:07

A kid's packed lunch consisting of a cheese sandwich, an apple, a banana, and a pot of carrot and pepper sticks. I thought nutritious, MN said full of horrid sugary carbs.

ILoveShula · 16/09/2021 12:07

Drinking more than a thimbleful of alcohol once a year makes you an alcoholic unless it is Prosecco or gin.

SylvanasWindrunner · 16/09/2021 12:08

I put the dog bowls in with the rest of our stuff in the dishwasher. And the dog often licks the dirty plates when they're sitting in there. Apparently this is only a step down from putting your loo brush in the dishwasher (yes we have a loo brush but it's a silicone one so I think we am have dodged a bullet?! It doesn't go in the dishwasher though!)

In RL in my circle of friends or family I've never known anyone to express disgust (or even offer an opinion tbh) but I notice them crop up on MN as things that people find offensive!

Eating a chicken in one meal.

SylvanasWindrunner · 16/09/2021 12:10

Oh and knickers just go in with the rest of the clothes in the washing machine. The fabled poo particles be damned.

Frazzledbutcalm · 16/09/2021 12:11

@TiredButDancing

Oh yes, that you should be mortally offended and/or terrified your child will die from germs if some old lady leans over the pram, strokes their cheek and comments on how sweet they are.

I handed almost newborn DS over to an old couple who were clearly desperate for a cuddle in a coffee shop once while waiting for my NCT gang to arrive. I now understand why they all looked at me like I was crazy when they got there to discover me chatting to a couple of strangers who were cooing over DS!!

Oh that is so sweet 😊😊🥰🥰 … the elderly couple will remember that precious moment forever and will retell everyone around them constantly .. you will have made their day ❤️❤️
Cocogreen · 16/09/2021 12:11

The fear and loathing of en suites is absolutely hysterical.
And the idea of having rules about which loos are for wee and others for poo which some people seem to have in place in their houses is a bit much.

imjustsoworried · 16/09/2021 12:13

Putting 'D' in front of everything even when the person is a twat. See 'DP' when they've cheated, 'DM' when they're clearly very toxic.

DDog always makes me laugh though. I know it means 'dear dog' but come ON.

snanagram · 16/09/2021 12:13

Never buy/rent a house that is more than 5 miles from a major hospital.

Never let a drop of alcohol pass your lips if you have children on the off chance that you need to drive them to said hospital.

Driving is essential - regardless of the fact that driving lessons/tests/running a car are out of reach of many people who are barely scraping by.

ivykaty44 · 16/09/2021 12:16

What are the things you've been educated on since joining MN?

white plain bed linen only

yeah right...thats a no from me

degsydoodoos · 16/09/2021 12:16

Doing one lot of washing for everyone in the house, instead of each family member washing their own clothes!!

Evening only wedding invitations

Weddings without a free bar

Going to visit a new baby (and parents) and being offered a little hold of the baby!!

Adult children paying keep, and it not being "saved and given back to them as a house deposit"

Not getting any financial help from parents or other family

I could go on.... but all of these are perfectly normal things in my life, and I'd never experienced any opinions to the contrary except on here!

ivykaty44 · 16/09/2021 12:17

46% of people in London don't own a car

and its 33% in the rest of the country

@Brollywasntneededafterall

I have a loo brush and leave my washing out overnight.. True rebel me... Grin
Me too - although I now try to dash out at 10 or 11 so it does not get "overnighted" (I never knew that was a thing).
slashlover · 16/09/2021 12:19

I'm single and have male friends, apparently that makes me some sort of vixen with a mission to steal boyfriends/husbands.
