What did you do with your wedding dress?

I have separated from my husband over 20 years + and I've always had the dress hung up in its bag in the wardrobe. But I was having a clear out today and I was wondering what to do with it.

I don't fit in it now Blush
Regardless of whether you are still married or not, what did you do with yours?

Gave mine to a local charity on the same lines as cherished gowns. Thankfully given the use for them they don't need many so they don't advertise that they take them but gratefully did when I offered.

I'd got divorced after a short and abusive marriage so selling it or passing it to a charity shop for reuse as a wedding dress didn't seem right. Binning it seemed a waste.

I briefly considered wearing it for a colour run with a couple of divorced friends but am perfectly happy and at peace with where it ended up.

Mine has been stored in the lofts of the three different houses we've lived in since our wedding 25 years ago. On our silver wedding anniversary last week we got it down from the loft and I tried it on ( couldn't do it up as I'm a stone heavier than I was on my wedding day). DD13 tried it on and declared it a bit old fashioned but asked me to save the veil and head dress in case she ever gets married.

Everything is now back in the loft.

Hope you had a great anniversary. Did you try the dress on to surprise your husband or was he with you?

@lightand

No not really. Tight in all sorts of wrong places.
At least you got it on. I am going to try mine again but not hopeful!! Keep your fingers crossed for mr
lightand · 19/09/2021 16:07

Will do!

Soubriquet · 19/09/2021 16:08

Accidentally left it behind in a house move. Never to see again

It’s such a shame because it was a beautiful dress and a bargain at the same time

Tried to get into my old dress. Total failure. I intended to surprise DH. I did but it was embarrassing rather than a pleasant surprise! We laugh about it now

I gave mine to cherished babies to be made into burial gowns for premature babies.
Having lost 3 babies myself but never being able to bury them I thought it was important to help those who can bury their precious babies.
I nearly lost my 2 surviving children shortly after birth and they would have been too small for traditional gowns as well.

I did feel a bit better, when my 20 something, not really overweight DD, couldnt get it to fit on her properly either.
I was probably smaller than her, back in the day.

ineedsun · 21/09/2021 17:05

My daughter (DSD) wore it for her wedding. It’s now at her house and presumably if DGD wants to wear it, she can.

Think I might try this. My DD is not overweight but I can't try again myself. When my husband came home I had the dress totally stuck over my head. I had to wait for him to stop laughing!!

I presume laughing at your story because it was funny?

Anycrispsleft · 26/09/2021 21:41

Mine was a second hand bridesmaid's dress. It sat in my wardrobe until my then 2yo twins discovered it, and then on very, very special occasions they were allowed to "put it on" (stand in a massive puddle of dress holding onto the shoulder straps). Then one day, DD2 was on her last nerve - she had an upset stomach, and we had just moved into a half-finished house - and I let her have the dress to wear as nothing else was cheering her up, and she had an accident on it. From there it went into the washing machine, and from there to their dressing up box. They're 9 now and they still have it!

You're probably right. Looking back it is funny now but at the time it was really embarrassing particularly as DH brought a friend home with him. What do yo do?

I still have mine, never getting rid of it. It was bought with money my nan left me in her will the year before we married.

Our last time seeing each other, we were discussing what dress she could imagine me wearing on the day. She died 10 days later. Just after I received her money, I was walking past a wedding dress shop and in the window was the dress my nan described. It had everything she described. I went in and ordered it then phoned my mum to say I had my dress sorted.
She was shocked that I had chosen it without her being there but when she did see it she thought it was perfect.
I love that my nan helped choose the dress and bought it for me.
