What did you do with your wedding dress?

I have separated from my husband over 20 years + and I've always had the dress hung up in its bag in the wardrobe. But I was having a clear out today and I was wondering what to do with it.

I don't fit in it now Blush
Regardless of whether you are still married or not, what did you do with yours?

Gave mine to Oxfam when H and I got divorced after 20 years of marriage. It was a traditional early 90s thing so knew I wouldn't sell it. I have kept my cathedral length veil in case my daughter wants it - it is beautiful and when my sister tried it on with her dress with a view to borrowing it, the lady in the bridal shop said you wouldn't get anything of that quality these days and that was 20 years ago! Not sure I've kept it in the best way though as it's hanging on a hanger in my wardrobe

Mine is wrapped in a display box all wrapped up after being cleaned etc. However, it has just been sat in a space for the last 10 years and I have often wondered what to do with it. There is a charity bridal shop in a local town for a local hospice and I think I am going to take it there this weekend. We are moving house soon and it seems silly to lug about.

I got married 6yrs ago. It's in the loft but is in a dress bag. I did plan to sell it but I got a drink stain on it and not sure an expensive clean will take it out so there it is. It's a shame really as it's a a beautiful dress and still very much a trendy style.

In the loft.
Not quite meringue, but not that many years after that style.
Put it on recently[ish].
The kids had a right giggle.

Deadringer · 17/09/2021 13:24

In a case in the attic for 34 years. Still married. just about

Username7521 · 17/09/2021 13:34

Wear it! But I didn’t go for a white dress as I couldn’t stand the idea of spending thousands of £££ and only wearing it once.

languagelover96 · 17/09/2021 13:37

My mom sold it this year as she wanted a puppy instead. She is still married but her once unblemished wedding dress has been ripped to shreds by Milo our new family puppy.

languagelover96 · 17/09/2021 13:38

so she binned it oops

beguilingeyes · 17/09/2021 13:40

I got married in a calf-length red lace dress...bought specifically with the idea that I could wear it again. It's taken me six years to be able to get into it again....so I still haven't worn it.

My mum kept hers in the loft-for 50-odd years hoping that I might wear it, but I'm six inches taller than her so that was never going to work.

WitchDancer · 17/09/2021 13:58

I gave mine to Bonnie Babies, who made them into outfits for babies that have passed away.

NeedWineNow · 17/09/2021 14:12

Mine's in the loft (after 25 years). My veil and shoes went to the charity shop when we moved. I did have an idea of having it cut to prom length and dyed so I could wear it again but that's never happened!

Tay1980 · 17/09/2021 14:16

After my divorce had finalised I chucked it in the skip when we moved…if I had daughters I would have kept it but I have sons so knew they wouldn’t be overly bothered!

AudTheDeepMinded · 17/09/2021 14:26

Mine's in its bag and hung up in the airing cupboard on the landing. It has been cleaned but still has green seaweed stains around the hem (don't ask!). It was an inexpensive Monsoon dress with an empire line top but I really loved it. I don't have any daughters so I'm not sure what will happen to it. But it's been in the airing cupboard for 11 years now!

3GreenPullups · 17/09/2021 15:27

Mine was quite short and not wedding dress-y. I had it dyed sapphire blue and in theory wear it as a cocktail frock but for the fact I had to starve myself down to 8 stone to fit it and have never been that small since.

carolinesbaby · 17/09/2021 15:45

A friend of mine is a fashion student who is looking for a donated wedding dress to recycle for her finals project.

I'm not ready to part with mine yet though.

Still tempted to try my old dress but not sure I'll get into it. Did you manage okay?
lightand · 17/09/2021 17:23

No not really. Tight in all sorts of wrong places.

CrazyCatMamma · 17/09/2021 17:46

Mine was made into christening gowns for my children. They have one each they can pass on now.

Beelzebop · 17/09/2021 18:10

I'm thinking of turning mine into a Halloween costume. Most appropriate.

PresidentJoey · 17/09/2021 18:26

I sold mine to a wedding dress shop after my divorce, it was a beautiful Maggie dress but I was so skint and I needed the money. A year later I spotted this dress on Facebook (it was a distinctive dress) being worn by my friend's evil MIL at her third wedding Shock

I was quite upset that this horrid little woman wore my dress but two years later her husband died. That dress was cursed Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/09/2021 18:29

Made squillions of Christmas angel decorations and sold them for a tenner each!

Echobelly · 17/09/2021 18:29

Mine was just a bridesmaid dress. I did actually wear it once after I was married, but after two pregnancies it just doesn't do up around my ribcage anymore!

Was keeping it in case eldest wants it for anything, but TBH, she's probably going to be such a different shape to me I doubt it'll ever fit her (she's 13 and I think she's going to be a bigger bra size than me soon!). It's still hanging in a cupboard, maybe a niece will do something with it some day. It might just get eaten by our moths some day but I won't be too bothered if that happens.

JemimaPyjamas · 17/09/2021 18:33

Its hung off the picture rail in my bedroom - looks great! Otherwise, it'd be in a box, or the wardrobe and never see the light of day.

BraveGoldie · 17/09/2021 18:36

Suitcase in the loft... am divorced but I regard it as part of my daughter's family history. For now at least, she doesn't want me to get rid of it.....

...... planning to be shopping for a new one soon! 😁😁😁

SinoohXaenaHide · 17/09/2021 18:36

I had mine made into a christening robe for my DC a few years later. Now have to keep fingers crossed for the next 25-40 years or so that I eventually get a grandchild who might also get Christened - at which point it then becomes a Family Tradition and may get used for generations to come.

Or the next generation may all be atheists in which case it will get dumped in the trash eventually.
