What did you do with your wedding dress?

I have separated from my husband over 20 years + and I've always had the dress hung up in its bag in the wardrobe. But I was having a clear out today and I was wondering what to do with it.

I don't fit in it now Blush
Regardless of whether you are still married or not, what did you do with yours?

@ParkheadParadise

I gave it to my local chapel. It was made into a First communion dress for children that couldn't afford to buy one. I received a picture of the beautiful little girl on her special day. The dress was re-used again the next year.

This is so lovely 💕

OfTheNight · 14/09/2021 20:34

Gave it to a charity who organise weddings for terminally ill people. They passed it in to another charity who recycle wedding dresses once it was past its best.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2021 20:36

Sold it for more than I paid for it when i got back from honeymoon. Didn't see the point of it sitting in a bag in the loft.

Ex husband chopped it up when he pulled my uni books to bits for leaving him

I CBA to get mine dry cleaned after my wedding, so the grass stains dried in. I kept it for ages but eventually binned it. It wasn't expensive and had served its purpose.
I did keep my veil and my sister in law wore it to her wedding.

CottageOnTheHill · 14/09/2021 20:47

DD asked for mine and had parts of it re-made into her wedding dress. I also had my mum’s wedding dress and parts of that went into DD’s dress too. Some of the fabric from both dresses also went to make DGC’s christening gown. I don’t know why I kept the dress tbh as I divorced DD’s dad.

OhGiveUp · 14/09/2021 20:50

My daughter wore it on her wedding day after some slight professional alterations, then it was made into a christening gown for my grandkids.
The left over scraps and lace were made into cushion covers and nightdress cases for my bed.

2catsandhappy · 14/09/2021 20:54

Gave it to my dsd. Literaly don't know what happened to it.

Has anyone done Trash The Dress? Seems a bit wasteful/entitled, but some of the photos are very cool.

MiddleParking · 14/09/2021 21:43

DH took it to the tip. That fucker was never getting clean enough for anyone to wear it again.

MissSmiley · 14/09/2021 21:57

My ex put it in the garage and it got water damaged, I screwed it up and put it in a carrier bag and put it in the slip when the builders started my extension, cost ££££, I was glad to see it gone, it was 20 years old

This is where mine went too :)
Blackopal · 16/09/2021 15:09

Sold mine straight away (only could afford it with the plan of selling it).

The lady that purchased it sent me the photos of her wedding, was lovely.

Jennyw12 · 16/09/2021 17:00

Has anyone worn their old dress again? Willing to try to surprise DH but don't think I'd be able to get into it these days

Theblackdogagain · 16/09/2021 17:45

I put it on over the first lock down for a laugh, I've put on two dress sizes but it was tied up back and do I got it on.

mrsdavegrohl · 16/09/2021 17:52

It's in the loft. It's been there 10 years, haven't even looked at it.
It's not traditional or white so can't imagine anyone else would want it

dun1urkin · 16/09/2021 17:57

Mine was in three parts, skirt, bodice and jacket. I sold the skirt and jacket on eBay Had to chuck the bodice as it was made bespoke to my massive boobs and small waist with about a million bones, and uneconomic for anyone to alter to reuse

Daisy62 · 16/09/2021 18:21

Gave it to a charity shop that had a centralised system for selling nearly new wedding dresses. Tried a few charity shops first, to check it wouldn't be sold for a fiver for dressing up - I wanted the charity to get a reasonable amount for it. Donated it less than a year after my wedding, while it was still a current style and still on sale new.

Congrats. Did you manage to get it on by yourself or did you need some help?
sueelleker · 17/09/2021 10:27

Charity shop. We're still married, but it wasn't the sort of dress you could adapt to an evening dress; so I gave it away.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/09/2021 10:29

Had it died black and continued to wear it to the odd posh do.

DoucheCanoe · 17/09/2021 10:50

I gave it to the charity shop after 3 wears.

It wasn't a traditional wedding dress though - a 50's style black and white halter dress that cost £30 so I got my monies worth!

If I had a traditional dress I'd have kept it for my daughter to alter into something she loved if she wanted or given it to a charity that turns them in to gowns for still born babies.

tiggy20 · 17/09/2021 10:58

A month after our wedding I gave it to a charity fighting poverty that rent wedding dresses out to brides. It was such a beautiful dress and I didn't want it rotting in the loft! Makes me happy that the charity is making money from it.
