What's your biggest waste of money ?

Ok so currently fuming at myself and my stupidity because I purchased something by accident thinking it was an upgrade for an item but it was infact the same one I already owned. It's the type of thing that cannot be resold.

Company have refused to help even though I proved already having the item etc etc . Anyway.... £60 down the drain on nothing .

Also started a small hobby business but struggling to see how I'll get the money back that I put in Blush (not mlm btw) so another £300 gone (be lucky to get £100)

What's your biggest waste of money lately? Make me feel better that it's not just me who throws money into the wind and kicks myself for weeks on end about it. Sad

My country boots. Supposed to be waterproof but they aren't. Wore them walking the dogs by the river so got them minging. They gave me horrendous blisters, they now look terrible and my feet got wet walking through a puddle. Think I need muckers instead 😪

alwayswrighty · 14/09/2021 07:19

Oh and they were just shy of £100

ANameChangeAgain · 14/09/2021 07:24

My Timberland boots. Cheap chappy thin laces and narrow fitting. The £25 boots from Shoe Zone are far more comfortable!
An Argos leather sofa that the dogs only need to look at to scratch.
Don't beat yourself up about your hobby business costing more than it'll make. If you enjoy doing it and will get a little bit of money back, then its worth it. I run a sucessful business now, but have had so many failed ideas its laughable.

The copious amounts of cross stitching supplies (patterns, aida, threads and hoops) I own.

At the rate it takes me to to complete one pattern, I've estimated I'll have worked my way through my supply by the age of 324.

And that's if I dont buy any more.

It's bugs me having to spend money on the thing the kids break. iPhone cable last week. It was snapped out of the iPad rather than pulled but these things are a weekly basis.

Also my husband is forever buying medication. Slight sniffle and one of those squirty up the nose things but if he looked at home we'd probably have about 10. Heartburn tablets but again the house is full of them, then when he has a clear out and finds them he dumps them all as they have gone out of date Angry

@ANameChangeAgain your right I do enjoy it so I shouldnt be hard on myself - just feel bad Sad the guilts!

Years ago, had my eye on a lovely jumper from White Company. Delicate fabric, pale grey, bit shimmery, beautiful. Cost £87. After coveting it for literally 8 months, I thought fuck it, I deserve a treat and bought it.

Within the first ten minutes of me wearing it for the first time, I spilled bright yellow mustard down the front and nothing would lift the stain out. The fabric was too delicate to do any major scrubbing or use any chemicals on it so that was that. Ruined on the first wear.

Probably too late for your poor jumper but for future reference, sunlight is like a little miracle on mustard and most organic stains (eg tomato/carrot). I had a top with curry sauce down the front, no amount of stain remover was shifting it, but a sunny day on the line, all gone.
lurkingfromhome · 14/09/2021 09:47

@SaturdaySpread - ah, thank you - if only I'd had that top tip to hand when the mustard disaster occurred. Good for future reference, though, as no doubt there will be more incidents involving nice jumpers and brightly coloured condiments!

@lurkingfromhome oh no that's heartbreaking!!!! Sad

Argos furniture for my son's bedroom. Falling apart within weeks.

I bought a jumper online from the Reiss sale. Its slightly too small and doesnt really suit me. £90 wasted!

Baboutheocelot · 14/09/2021 09:59

Feeding my kids. I feel like most of the food just goes in the bin. I may as well buy 12 packs of crackers and let them eat those for every meal.

Abracadabra12345 · 14/09/2021 10:02

I love this thread!

Mine is also a pair of expensive, top of the range unisex wellingtons. First wear and they rub my feet and are too narrow so heaven knows how they can be called unisex.

I guess stationery for my hobby but although I have far too much and will, like the pp, need to live to 324 to use it all. But it gives me such pleasure and when I come across some that has been buried for a year, it’s like it’s new and gives me joy!

I do agree with another pp who talks of replacing kids’ broken stuff 😬

I definitely would have cried at this. Poor beautiful jumper.

I think one of my biggest waste of money purchases was a treadmill.

SweatyBetty20 · 14/09/2021 10:10

Buying clothes without reading the washing instructions and realising when I’ve worn it and it’s ready for the wash that it’s dry clean only.

So it stays in the laundry basket for a couple of weeks or months, then I think I really should take that to the cleaners. Then I think, surely it’ll be alright on a delicates wash. So I do that. Then I take it out and realise that it would only fit a teddy bear because it’s been shrunk that much.

Cassimin · 14/09/2021 10:13

Shower cubicle 2 weeks ago.
Plumer told me to order 700mm so I did.
It came, was too small. Plumer called me up to show me, saying I’d ordered wrong size/ they’d sent wrong size ( making out it was my fault)
I got the tape measure and measured it - it was 7500mm!
Stuck in my hall for 2 weeks, sold it on fb for £50, cost me £200

MojitoPlease12 · 14/09/2021 10:26

Ahhh these are all so frustrating also! How do you let this stuff go without simmering inside Sad I suppose it's just life isn't it Grin you live and you learn

About 7 years ago I was getting work done on my house. One of the jobs was a new porch. To get this done I had to have the gas box outside moved a few meters which cost 900 euros by the gas company..extortion but nobody else could do it. I then changed my mind about putting in the porch. All my own fault and felt like a complete eejit. Such a waste 😪

MojitoPlease12 · 14/09/2021 11:45

@cstaff oh no that's a bad one where you can't resell or anything ... no way to claw back . So frustrating!

I bought a lovely bottle green suede pencil skirt and dropped creme brule down it first time

Also craft supplies here. Fabric and yarn. Also just invested in the Aldi overlocker that is on the site at the moment - went over a pin the second time I used it and knackered the cutting knife. No problem, it comes with a spare. Changed the knife and promptly did the exact same thing again. Then discovered that you can't get replacements ANYWHERE that I can find, so I'm hoping the wee hardware shop man who sharpens knifes can re edge them for me, but they are really tiny...
