Has anyone had a dream/nightmare like this?

Last night I had a dream where I was involved in a helicopter crash, and I was very aware in my dream that this was the moment I was going to die. I dreamt that the noise from the crash was so loud and explosive, that I literally heard it in my head, and when I woke abruptly from said dream, my head was throbbing and my heart was racing. The noise in my head was so loud!

Has anyone experienced a dream like this before?

A few times. Most recently crashing off a bridge and feeling the moment of knowing it was going to happen, and feeling the fall before waking up with a real start.

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 13/09/2021 21:04

It's horrible isn't it. It was SO vivid.

I have 9/11 style dreams but they happen on the high street where I grew up - so a plant flies into the local shopping centre. They're so vivid. Sad

Over the years I've had a reoccurring dream where I was stabbed and pushed from a moving car. I knew in the dream it was the 1920's/30's and as I fell every time I bumped off the running board of the old car and lay in the road looking up to an archway which was a kind of gateway over the road into the town beyond.
It's always vivid, I feel the stab in the side, I feel the bumps as I hit the board and the road and as things start to go black I always wake up.

Very weird and it's been happening since I was a small child.

I was standing in a wide tree lined avenue, houses set back with lawns and shrubs infront, just like a US suburb. It was dark with street lights and porch lights on. It was silent, around 3am and I was the only person out walking up this road.

Some lights came into view and a wide low sports car approached me. Some vivid rock was being played in the car and the exterior was bashed, scratched and covered in mud and grime. As it approached it did a wide circle across the width of the road and stopped with its bonnet just a yard from me. The engine noise was deep powerful and menacing. The driver was young, thick set, dreadlocks. There was a sense of malevolence about this person and a sense I was powerless and was going to be killed. The driver got out of the car, approached me and thrust a long thick knife into me. I felt hot and weak and felt my life was ebbing away. The dream was so powerful I must have been compelled to wake up......straight into several minutes of sleep paralysis which followed.

Yes, there's a name for those loud noises you hear in your sleep but aren't real...exploding head syndrome maybe?

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 14/09/2021 22:27

Wow some of these are so vivid!

I'm off to google exploding head syndrome now!

@JollyHostess I've just searched for Exploding Head Syndrome and it does sound like that except it was in the middle of my sleep as opposed to whilst falling asleep or waking. I hope it doesn't happen again!

How hideous. Sleep paralysis is awful , I get it sometimes.
JollyHostess · 14/09/2021 22:46

I've experienced it once where it was part of a dream. Which was that someone fired a gun through my letter box, and once where I just hear the noise and woke up trying to work out if it was real or not 😂

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 14/09/2021 22:53

I've just searched for sleep paralysis as well and I definitely experienced this one I woke from the dream. I found it calming though. My brain was aware it was a dream but I couldn't move for a few minutes.

I have a regular nightmare being in a tower block inferno like grenfell 😢

WanJames · 14/09/2021 22:55

I get sleep paralysis too 😬

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/09/2021 22:56

Toilets. Always toilets. Unusable toilets. Overflowing toilets. Door less toilets.

Sigh.

WanJames · 14/09/2021 22:57

Oh yes ‘The Toilet’ dream…have that regularly too 🚽

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 14/09/2021 22:59

Oh gosh toilet dreams sound awful.

I often have a dream I'm trying to get ready for work and for some reason I can't leave the house and I'm getting later and later panicking I'm not at work. Jeez what a saddo Grin

Oh yes - the toilet dream - occupied toilets, shower cubicles, missing toilets, people beating me to the last toilet, doorless toilets etc... Normally have those dreams when I have a very full bladder...

LatinforTelly · 14/09/2021 23:07

Me too with the toilet dreams. I do like a nice clean private toilet, always thought it was just my anxieties coming to the fore!

In my 20s I had violent persecution dreams which always had to end with me killing the perpetrator violently. It got to the point where I could recognise it was a dream and sort of steer it away from the gruesomeness.

Your loud noise thing sounds horrible, OP.

RedSoloCup · 14/09/2021 23:10

Yes I was shot at the top of some stairs, I wasn't scared and I felt the whole thing then thought I'm dead! So real I'm still semi convinced happened in a past life maybe and the dream was about 15-20 years ago!!

BIL used to do past life regression (ages after dream and never on me) is v interesting

JamMakingWannaBe · 14/09/2021 23:12

I woke screaming from a very vivid dream about crashing my car at a notorious blackspot junction where I used to live. They've improved the junction now, but every time I go back to the area I get the heebie-jeebies. Weirdess thing was, Wayne Rooney was in the front passenger seat! No idea why.

OldTinHat · 14/09/2021 23:16

Me too with the toilet and shower dreams! Always lots of people around, no doors, overflowing loos. Glad I'm not alone!

disculpe · 14/09/2021 23:17

Yes, quite a lot. I'm afraid of flying and often in the weeks leading up to flying I'll have incredibly vivid dreams of being in a plane crash. which is really helpful- thanks subconscious! The noises of the engines or of myself and others screaming in the dream often wakes me up and it takes me a while to calm down because it was so vivid and loud! Sometimes I've thought I've actually screamed out loud in my sleep and that's what's woken me up but my DH never wakes up so it must just all be in my head.

Dreamstate · 14/09/2021 23:19

I experienced exploding head syndrome, mine was about kids smashing through my house downstairs and calling my name and ended with someone literally whispering my name in my ear and an alright explosive noise and I woke up

Scary as he'll, they dont know why you get it, some point to stress. It went away after a few weeks and not had it again.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/09/2021 23:21

@JayAlfredPrufrock

Me too! Or toilets that are really high up and I need to climb to use them but that would involve touching a dirty seat. I've had these dreams so many times.
