Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

The terms foraged or locally sourced are so overused

You picked it or just plain bought it for goodness sake.

ButNotTonight20 · 12/09/2021 17:35

Oh and don't get me started on artisan.

catfunk · 12/09/2021 17:36

Really shitty slimming world type fakeaway recipes. They always look dreadful and I'd rather have cheese on toast.

dotdotdotdash · 12/09/2021 17:40

Badly made sourdough with massive holes so the butter drips off

speakout · 12/09/2021 17:41

Salted confectionary, ice cream or chocolates, why???

dotdotdotdash · 12/09/2021 17:41

Agreed, Oreos are processed rubbish full of palm oil but some people seem to love them and I don’t know why

Standrewsschool · 12/09/2021 17:42

Salted caramel.

Brownies - always on a dessert menu served with icecream

Cupcakes - with lots of icing on them - give me an old fashioned fairy cake with a thin laying of icing (made with icing sugar and water), and sprinkles any day (although you do see less of these nowadays)

Fresh fruit salads - missing in action, you never see these served as desserts any more (trying to be health conscious when going out)

dotdotdotdash · 12/09/2021 17:42

Yes @speakout. Why would you want salt flakes in your chocolate? Ruins it.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 12/09/2021 17:43

Lotus Biscoff flavoured everything 🤢

justasking111 · 12/09/2021 17:43

Reading a catering article a lot of chefs have thrown in the towel where vegan V vegetarian is concerned. Covid wise being short staffed vegans being more vocal than vegetarians these days the expense of stocking pseudo meats means vegetarians have suffered

IglesiasPiggle · 12/09/2021 17:43

I forgot sourdough. I do not understand the appeal of sour bread.

@DearFatties

Also people saying things like ‘fermented’ foods or red curry…they are actually foods of other nations, not random trends…
Something can be a regular food in its country of origin and a trend somewhere else. They’re not mutually exclusive.
MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 12/09/2021 17:44

The only veggie burger option being a vegan one. I don’t want horrible plastic cheese on my burger!

CarrotSticks23 · 12/09/2021 17:45

I fully agree with the cakes with biscuits on top

Any over the top deserts covered in various biscuits, sweets, chocolate sauce. Freak shakes, cakes covered in biscuits/sweets, ice creams that are covered in masses of shit. Cakes that's are covered in royal icing so they can look nice but are not tasty. Too much and means I can never have a desert.

Most of the things on here I am okay with though

PatchworkElmer · 12/09/2021 17:46

@NotAnotherPylon

Another one fed up with vegan options replacing vegetarian options. This affects DP more than me as, while I prefer vegetarian food, I do occasionally eat meat, but DP doesn't eat meat at all and he is not vegan. Yet it is assumed he'll be ok with a few shreds of cardboard held together with wallpaper paste. Don't get me wrong, many of our favourite dishes, which I've been cooking for years, are vegan, but vegetarians have always been sidelined in restaurants with limited selections and mediocre dishes and now they're sidelined even further by the vegan trend.
Sorry, why is veganism a “trend” but vegetarianism not? Veganism has been around for a long time…
CaptaNoctem · 12/09/2021 17:46

Salted caramal here too

I am so over it. It ruins everthing it is in.

CarrotSticks23 · 12/09/2021 17:47

Also hate the term fakeaway. I know how to make a curry, stir fry or pizza (because its never anything interesting) but a takeaway it is not.

drpet49 · 12/09/2021 17:47

Processed fake vegan food

MouseholeCat · 12/09/2021 17:48

I eat a lot of vegan food but I'm so fed up of the way vegan food influencers overly stress how delicious and like the real thing their creations are. Especially things that copy meat dishses like carrot hotdogs and carrot bacon. Vegan dishes are best when they are their own thing.

Influencers selling their disordered eating habits through 'what I eat in a day' videos.

LittleMissPeggySue · 12/09/2021 17:48

Mayonnaise on every shop bought sandwich ever.

Menus which refer to "slaw" and "smashed avo". Stop, it makes my teeth itch and IMO both taste like 💩 anyway 😡

Ellie56 · 12/09/2021 17:49

@Dashdotcom

Stuff being served on boards/slates at restaurants, poor waiting staff have to do that awkward push and slide across the table to try and pick it up.

JUST USE A PLATE.

Yes and it is disgusting as you can't wash wooden boards on a hot wash, so God knows how many germs are on them. Yuk
EmbarrassingAdmissions · 12/09/2021 17:49

The sweetness of everything. It's hard to taste anything else.

The vegan faux meats are sweet.

Commercial dessert products and biscuits etc. are far too sweet.

Salad dressings can be sweet.

dotdotdotdash · 12/09/2021 17:49

But @PatchworkElmer, I think there are many more vegetarians or people who enjoy vegetarian dishes than there are vegans but the degree to which vegans are now catered for marks it as a food trend

KohlaParasanda · 12/09/2021 17:50

Shakes and smoothies marketed to people who are capable of chewing proper food.
Huge swirls of buttercream on everything.
Snobbery about the cocoa content of chocolate.
Turmeric in everything.
Alcopops marketed to adults as artisanal fruit gin, with a huge price premium.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/09/2021 17:52

It’s a restaurant trend rather than an actual food trend but… menus that say ‘19’ ‘8’ etc with no pound sign. Just makes me think things are overpriced.
