Which food trends are you tired of?

Sriracha on everything. Enough already.

I don't understand this trend for putting biscuits on cakes, in brownies and in chocolate. I could understand it a bit more if it's incorporated into the brownie but often it's just stuck on top.

Burgers that require you to dislocate your jaw in the manner of a python, in order to eat them. I don't have a delicate appetite. I like a good sized burger but some are so ridiculously huge and have so many toppings that you practically need a forklift to get it to your mouth.

What food trends don't you understand?

My memory of food as it used to be was pre-90s, fried usually meant deep fried. Pan-fried started being used in the River Cafe era to make it clear that it meant something different, although the necessity of saying it has always been queried.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/09/2021 16:26

I disagree - it was always fried or deep fried. Fried on its own did not mean deep fried. Pan fried is just a poncey term to make it sound somehow nicer imho.

midsomermurderess · 13/09/2021 16:26

I don't care if someone is vegan, but why do people need to announce it? If you don't need to know, you won't be eating with them or feeding them, why the need for 'I'm vegan'. That is what I'm tired of.

Can I ask where people are going to be offered bubble tea and milk shakes with biscuits and cakes on top ?

Not that I want them, just curious as I haven't seen these things .

I like salted caramel though as I think the salt makes it less sickly .

DahliaMacNamara · 13/09/2021 16:40

I don't know where the salted caramel hate comes from either. I love the stuff. My only criticism is that sometimes it could do with a touch more salt. And there aren't enough decent proper chewy caramels around. They've gone all soft. I like to give my teeth a challenge.

We shall have to agree to disagree. Pan-fried was used for specific purposes - eg pan-fried fish, and got hijacked to sound poncy, but originally there was a sound reason for using it. Even now, fried chicken and fish would be taken by many to mean deep-fried (eg fried chicken on this very thread).

Sorry but I haven't got tired yet with brioche buns or avocado on toast with a poached egg.
Same with pulled pork.
I have noticed that pickled red onions have become a thing.
Though I have fallen out of love with salted caramel and the bottle of Sriracha hasn't been out of the cupboard in months. When staying with relatives abroad I had Philadelphia with Sriracha which was delicious on toast but can't be purchased here.

Tried bubble tea once when visiting a relative abroad. I love my tea but this was to my mind not very nice it was disgusting actually

Cava is much nicer than Prosecco.

I don't generally mind most food trends but I do feel a bit gyppy when I see wrappers on top of bakes. The outside of a sweet wrapper shouldn't be touching cake. Grim.

caspersmagicaljourney · 13/09/2021 17:36

@Dashdotcom

Stuff being served on boards/slates at restaurants, poor waiting staff have to do that awkward push and slide across the table to try and pick it up.

JUST USE A PLATE.

I hate this too - so unhygienic. I can't see what is wrong with using plates tbh 🙄
Thisisnotreallymyname · 13/09/2021 17:38

Cupcakes. Sponge, a bit of icing. End of.

Davygran · 13/09/2021 17:47

Anything described as “To die for”.
When I want food to kill me, I’ll order a side of arsenic, thanks.

Lincslady53 · 13/09/2021 17:49

Going for a roast and it comes stacked in a tower, with the yorkshire pud stuck on top like the turret on a castle.

Carpedimum · 13/09/2021 17:52

Chips with EVERYTHING on most menus. Even in high end places, every menu item has too many carbs & when is the message that sugar, grains & seed oils are poison to humans going to be received by the general population. This food leads to inflammation that is the root of all disease. We need to reconnect our palates without sweet flavours and remove the association that it is a treat. Food that delivers optimum vitamins and minerals for long term health is delicious!

cherish123 · 13/09/2021 17:57

Avocado, salted caramel.

Ingredients listed on a menu (eg) chicken , cream, turnip.

8dpwoah · 13/09/2021 17:58

Well there you go @Davygran apparently you can just order chips and die happy Hmm

Have a sugar, butter and flour-free Biscuit @carpedimum

cherish123 · 13/09/2021 17:58

Pasta was once on the menu as a side with steak!

Jeannie88 · 13/09/2021 17:59

Fake double cream, you know the sort that is yellow and tastes like oil?

LowlandLucky · 13/09/2021 18:01

Here in Scotland every god damn place has Haggis bon bons as a starter, bloody awful.

IntermittentParps · 13/09/2021 18:03

I love loads of things on here Grin
But am sick to the back teeth of salted caramel everything. And 'filthy' and 'dirty' and 'naughty' etc. I'm with Nigella: food isn't dirty!

Createdjustforthis · 13/09/2021 18:04

Brioche burger buns are amazing, you’ll have to pry them from my cholesterol choked arteries.

I’m sick of tapas style eating. It’s just awkward.

flibberyjibbery8 · 13/09/2021 18:05

Toffee apple crumble. Tastes shit. Keep it simple.

Also agree on the massive stacked burgers.

marioduck · 13/09/2021 18:05

Liver destroying quantities of sugar in a single "portion" of any dessert.

flibberyjibbery8 · 13/09/2021 18:06

I agree with the thing about not using plates too, if I know a place doesn't use a plate then I won't go. I only just started using wooden chopping boards, reluctantly. I think eating off wood is really gross.

theleafandnotthetree · 13/09/2021 18:08

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

I might come across as grumpy, but pretty much everything.

Food has turned into a spectator sport and a show of activity. I think it's obscene now, when we are nearing a environmental catastrophe to have all the wasteful cookery programmes and the endless cook books and magazines and to be chasing the newest, most exotic ingredient.

We need to step back and go back to a more utilitarian view on food, I think.

I am with you there. And I love good food, am quite adventurous etc. But it's just gone too far and is another symptom of our performative and shallow age
