Wedding v Engagement Ring

Currently shopping for wedding rings and surprised at the cost of a simple band.

My engagement ring has stones on the band and I want basically the same ring but without the setting and the diamond in the middle

Got me thinking what is one is normally more expensive. What cost more your engagement or wedding ring

Engagement ring was way more.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 12/09/2021 01:02

Yep, engagement ring cost more.

BobsBurgersisthebest · 12/09/2021 01:05

Engagement ring was more, which is expected as they mostly have diamonds in them.

My engagement ring was a lot more. It has lots of stones in it, my wedding ring is a simple gold band.

DressBitch · 12/09/2021 05:02

Engagement ring - £2000.
Wedding ring - $80.

I wear neither.

icedcoffees · 12/09/2021 06:42

My wedding ring was more expensive but it has diamonds and rubies in the band.

Parttimemostofthetime · 12/09/2021 06:47

My engagement ring has diamonds and cost 2k, I only wanted to wear one ring so bought a £35 wedding band but never ever wear it

ginsparkles · 12/09/2021 07:14

I'm a jeweller. In most instances the engagement ring will be more expensive than the wedding band, especially if the wedding band is a simple plain band.

The price of precious metals has escalated significantly recently which maybe why your surprised at the price of the wedding ring, but there are ways of finding less expensive options. Speak to a good local independent jewellers, they can help you select something appropriate within your budget.

A few years ago most brides were choosing diamond set bands as their wedding rings, recently we seem to have shifted back to plain rings and keeping the diamond set one as an eternity ring later. Maybe this is an option to consider?

My wedding ring was more because the engagement ring was one that DMiL gave to DH that had belonged to her mother. We had it valued and it turned out not to be a real diamond (but I don't care, I love it anyway). We bought each other's wedding bands from Tiffany's - mine was £600, DH's was £800 - flash git.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 12/09/2021 07:25

Not sure exactly how much my engagement ring cost but I’m guessing about 10x what we spent on my wedding ring. I think that’s fairly normal.

minatrina · 12/09/2021 07:31

My engagement ring was 9ct gold with diamonds which was £2K. My wedding ring is a plain 9ct gold band which cost around £100.

MatildaIThink · 12/09/2021 07:50

Engagement ring was probably around £1,500 but I am not totally sure, it was quite a few years ago and my husband and I did not have a lot of money at the time, but his last living grandparent died and he got around £2,000 which he spent on the ring and the weekend away where he proposed. We did not get married for several years and were a lot more comfortable financially by then but our wedding rings cost £140 each and part of that cost was because they are engraved on the inside.

In reality I could not care less about the value of the ring, it's meaning and value is because my husband gave it to me, not because it has any monetary value.

Indoctro · 12/09/2021 07:55

Engagement ring was £3500 and my wedding ring to match and to fit next to it was £1200 but I got it made

lachy · 12/09/2021 07:58

I think my wedding ring was about £200 (8yrs ago), engagement ring was £2000 (10 yrs ago).

Both 9ct white gold.

Marmite27 · 12/09/2021 08:01

My engaged ring was 150% more expensive than my wedding ring.

mummyh2016 · 12/09/2021 08:06

Where have you gone looking for a wedding ring? I got mine from the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, it was cheaper than anything comparable on the high street plus it was made to fit my engagement ring perfectly.

mummyh2016 · 12/09/2021 08:07

Just realised I didn't actually answer your question. Engagement ring was £1000, wedding ring £450.

Coogee · 12/09/2021 08:37

I have never asked what my engagement ring cost.

Currently shopping for wedding rings and surprised at the cost of a simple band.

If you are in the midlands or close,it might be worth a visit to the Birmingham jewellery quarter. I had mine made there. It’s not quite a simple band as it has diamonds embedded in it. They were matched to the one in my engagement ring. It cost less than half that of a comparable off-the-shelf ring from a high street jeweller.

MaverickDanger · 12/09/2021 08:41

Engagement ring was about 4.5k and wedding ring was 400.

My wedding ring sounds similar to what you want. Just has small diamonds most of the way around on the band. We got it from Ernest Jones.

Because of the setting of my engagement ring, I wear that separately on my right hand - or will do when I’ve lost the baby weight!

Outbutnotoutout · 12/09/2021 08:45

My engagement ring was £2500, platinum with diamonds

My wedding ring, has cost £34.95, silver band

(We aren't married yet, it's next year)

Lazypuppy · 12/09/2021 08:57

You have to have the same metal for both rings or they will be damaged. My DH bought a platinum engagement ring for £1200 and my wedding ring was £750 as it also has little diaminds in it and is platinum

minatrina · 12/09/2021 09:00

Oh yes I want to echo previous posters and recommend going to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, too Smile

Lazypuppy · 12/09/2021 09:00

@Outbutnotoutout your wedding ring needs to be platinum too, it will get damaged if worn next to eachother. The one rule is the rings need to be same hardness of metal

daisypond · 12/09/2021 09:04

Engagement ring.
Wedding ring was free - it was my grandma’s, and was a cheap ring in the first place.

SockQueen · 12/09/2021 09:07

Engagement ring was about £2k, I think (11 years ago).

For wedding rings we did a cute "experience day" where we went to a jewellery workshop and actually made (heavily supervised) each other's rings, both just plain 18k white gold bands. Because of that it cost more, so I think my share was probably about £500. If we'd bought a similar one from a normal shop it would probably be a couple of hundred cheaper.

I'm a hospital doctor so wanted a plain ring with no stones that I would be able to wear to work.
