Why do girls wear pinfores and not school skirts ?

I have a DS at school and a preschooler DD, but I don't get why the girls at infant school wear pinnys and not school skirts ? Do skirts just not work on infant age girls ? I mean a skirt can be worn all year with tight or socks around so surely this is cheaper? I don't see many girls in trousers either, which seems crazy in the snow and ice last year they are all wearing tights.

I mean I think personally the school uniform shouldn't be different for girls and boys, but anyway I don't want to make this protest via my DD 🤨

Are they not allowed to wear skirts?
Pinafores don't have to fit at the waist and won't fall down.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/09/2021 11:00

Eh?

Just out a skirt or trousers on your dd if you want to. Or a pinafore. Surely people just put their kids in their preferred uniform?

Your post is a little confusing too - you say pinafores arent good, but they are just skirts with a top part....then say skirts are great for all year round....then say they should be in trousers.

LakeShoreD · 09/09/2021 11:01

It’s easier to fit a pinafore because a skirt might be the right length but may not fit at the waist.

Pinafore are less likely to slip down on a child with no waist. Shirts less likely to come in tucked and be uncomfortable. Surely it's a choice anyway. Where I taught there was an option of trousers which a lot of girls wore but trousers are outgrown more quickly (my daughter has 4 boys and its a serious issue).

HelplessProcrastinator · 09/09/2021 11:02

Mix of pinafores, skirts and trousers for infant girls at our primary school. Are girls allowed to wear trousers?

BabyAlexander · 09/09/2021 11:02

Pinafores keep their tops clean. I'd be all up for my son wearing one. White polo shirts are the bane of my life.

Toomuchleopard · 09/09/2021 11:02

When my girls were little they had a couple of school skirts but their shirts were always hanging out as if they are tight enough round the waist to keep the shirt in, they are hard to get on and off. Pinafores with a zip up the front were easier for them to get on and off themselves and looked tidier.

DaisyDozyDee · 09/09/2021 11:02

Pinafores are easy to get the fit right.
Given the rate children can grow, trousers the right length have a very short lifespan. I’m very glad my son prefers shorts (even in the snow).

Jasmine11 · 09/09/2021 11:02

Pinafores are so much more practical as skirts are often too big around the waist. What do you not like about them OP?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/09/2021 11:03

My DD hated waistbands in reception and yr1. Pinafore were more comfy.

She hates tights still (yr4). So will wear knee socks and skirt or trousers sometimes. Even in snow.

SwayingInTime · 09/09/2021 11:03

Infant girls in my experience drop their skirt to their ankles when using the loo - anything to avoid this! Also with the windows open at the moment pinafores are an extra layer.

MedusasBadHairDay · 09/09/2021 11:03

My DD largely wore pinafores because she's a skinny little thing, so skirts have always been trickier to buy. If they fit in the waist they'd be far too short, but if the length was right they'd be so loose they'd fall down. She's never liked trousers, so pinafores were the most practical solution.

TwooThirty · 09/09/2021 11:04

Skirts end up twisting round on some children as they play. They look like a slightly uncomfortable whirlwind by the end of the day. Pinafores look comfy.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/09/2021 11:05

I remember finding pinafores more comfy when I was a kid. No messing around with things coming untucked.

DD, however, has worn trousers since her first year in school, when a boy kept lifting her pinafore. This is her 6th year in trousers and she loves them, they're very practical, warm and comfy.

3peassuit · 09/09/2021 11:06

Skirts and trousers were always too big round the waist for my girls, they never stayed up. Dresses were a better fit for them.

Cherryana · 09/09/2021 11:06

It’s just an item of clothing that is part of the uniform.

They looks sweet and smart.

Beamur · 09/09/2021 11:07

Pinafores are often more comfortable, kids grow out of them less quickly and the tops underneath stay cleaner looking. They're a very practical item of clothing.

VanishingWitch · 09/09/2021 11:07

DD preferred pinafores because of her tiny waist. She's still petite at 15. All skirts were too big even on smallest waistband adjustment. She still prefers things like jumpsuits or leggings that fit properly.

Rainallnight · 09/09/2021 11:07

My DD wears them because she has a gastro condition that gives her bad bloating. They’re a godsend for us (and I do think they look cute!)

GrandmaSteglitszch · 09/09/2021 11:07

As a primary child, I thought pinafores were so cool. 😎

maxineputyourredshoeson · 09/09/2021 11:08

When DD2 was younger I always put her in a pinafore because her waist was so slim that I had to pull the elastic in so far on her skirts it was uncomfortable. She now just wears skirts and tights - her choice, I’m forever trying to get her to wear trousers in winter but she prefers her tights.

DD1 had always worn trousers since reception.

PumpkinKlNG · 09/09/2021 11:08

I think dresses are easier than skirts personally, and not another thread about girls wearing trousers to school 💤💤💤 my girls don’t want to wear trousers! Are you the op who posted about wanting all schools to change to only allow trousers as that’s what your daughter wanted to wear but didn’t want to be the odd one out?

Comefromaway · 09/09/2021 11:08

When ds started school I had an absolute nightmare getting trousers that didn't fall down on him even with pull in waists. Putting dd in a pinafore was so much easier. It didn't matter if they were a bit too big on her.

PumpkinKlNG · 09/09/2021 11:09

Also my 4 year old has just started and no way would she manage with buckles or buttons, I don’t see how people claim they are “easier”

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/09/2021 11:10

I don't get why the thin Teflon trousers are seen as warmer than the thick wooly uniform tights...
