Haunted house stories!

I've been inspired to ask for your haunted house stories. Last night I made myself jump by thinking my hanging dressing gown was a shadowy figure in my bedroom, but it made me remember years ago when I thought my partner at the time was sleepwalking, which he did do from time to time. I woke up because it was really cold and saw what I thought was him. He was very tall, 6ft 7, and I could see him standing at the foot of our bed slightly rocking from side to side. I called his name and the rocking stopped and there was just suddenly an intense creepy feeling. I said "Dave, stop it! Come back to bed!" And his sleepy voice came from beside me, where he was IN BED with me, saying "what are you on about? I'm here!"
Obviously I pulled the covers straight over my head and lay there shaking in fright! He turned the light on and there was nothing there but he did also remark on how freezing the room had become.

A few years later, in the same house, I came home and the kitchen taps were both turned on full force. I had left the house empty and returned to it alone. That was spooky.

So, anyone else got a haunted house story? There are always lots of haunted pub, haunted graveyard/forest stories, but I'm interested in haunted residences!

We live in a 300 year old cottage. DS has seen a man in old fashioned clothes and a hat walking around. I've heard children's voices - playing and laughing. I thought it was the DC but they weren't where the voices were coming from.

Nothing scary, though, just all part of the fabric and history of the house.

I had a friend who lived in a new-ish house (not a new build but was only about 20/30 years old)
Anyway they had a baby and wanted another but sadly lost him
We would often see a little boy in the corner of our eye or hear him running around upstairs
It gave her a lot of comfort knowing he was around-we named him Sam which he seemed to like

My old flat had a presence. Never seen, but heard. When England played Argentina in the world cup years ago the racket coming from an empty room was hilarious (in a strange way.) Lots of other things to0, like doors slamming on their latch, with no wind or draft being the cause. Whoever he was, he meant no harm to me. When I moved out, I heard that the lady who moved in was a bit freaked by it all.

The house I grew up in was very creepy. It was just a normal terrace house but it wasn't really until we moved when I was 16 that I realised how un-spooky other houses were and just how bad it was - creepy things included:

Feeling someone sit on the end of my bed every night (no one there), mum always told me I was imagining it but after we moved admitted seeing a man sitting on the end of my bed a few times then disappearing but didn't want to freak me out!

SIL and I both seeing someone that we thought was my brother walk past my bedroom door and through his closed bedroom door (brother wasn't in the house)

Ornaments flying off shelves.

Taps turning themselves on full blast then off again.

Heavy footsteps banging up the stairs in the middle of the night.

Regularly seeing a man standing behind me when looking in the mirror, no one there when turning around.

Hearing light switches flip in the middle of the night.

All my other houses since have been fine.

I have a story but it’s too long to type here… not me where my mum lived.

Family house I grew up in there would be a very strong smell of flowers sometimes in the hall, mum didn’t wear perfume much or have flowers much. After going into an unexplored loft they found beautiful coloured drawings of flowers and discovered 2 sisters had lived there at turn of century (Victorian house). Smell of flowers gone now (still family home).

Our friends live in a 60s semi (so not in any sense a 'historic' building) over the years they have had lots of strange happenings . Things like items disappearing from where they were clearly placed in full view only to reappear a few days later in exactly the same spot and the tv and electric fan turning on when switched off.
It was a few years before they found out (thanks to the advent of google) that the previous occupants' grown up child was murdered while they lived there.

Gonnagetgoing · 09/09/2021 10:18

Potentially outing. My mum lived in a flat share in a house in Covent Garden or Kingly Street area. She experienced a strange period of events with her not being able to sleep, hearing male threatening voices, her father’s gold cross she’s had for years going missing etc… after a period of time and her male friend staying and giving her a floral Victorian silver cross for protection it all stopped.

Fast forward to a few years a mutual friend of a friend of hers who’d died came to stay and I was also over for dinner. Turns out this mutual friend shared the same flat in same house but at a different time to mum. So they get talking and friend says “did I ever tell you what happened in X house?” My mum stays silent. Friend recalls experience of being home late one night dark seeing a long olden days type skirt with stripes at bottom walk past her room (so seeing under door) and she was scared. Rushed into room next door to find other flatmate cowered in corner seen similar. Both girls were shaken up and they knew of a friendly policeman who used to come round for tea and check on them. He did some research and apparently a murder had been committed in that house and a woman murdered. My mum was relieved to hear this as it seemed the puzzle fitted together.

Another time when a relative died my mum swore a phone rang in our family home at exact same time.

Gonnagetgoing · 09/09/2021 10:20

I’m not sure about ghosts per se but apparently energy is left behind after someone dies and I suppose this can create happenings.

My mum had a beloved cat who died young - she swore after his death that for a few months she could feel him lying on her bed where she used to sleep with him. After a few months that went though.

CaMePlaitPas · 09/09/2021 10:31

I had a male shadow figure stand by my bed every night for about 4 years when I was a child. I couldn't see his features but he was tall enough to look into my bunk bed. He wasn't a threatening presence and I remember sitting up to look at him and touch him but it was like touching air. I was definitely awake. When we moved he didn't follow.

I remember often waking up in the middle of the night petrified in our next home, I was so sure there was something in my room but I daren't look. My Dad told me he didn't like the upstairs landing area because of the energy. He also told me he used to see things out the corner of his eye.

Years later, in the same house when I was about 22 I was sitting alone at the breakfast table at
9am, no one else in the house. I was eating when all of a sudden I heard movement from upstairs and as God as my witness someone heavy running down the stairs. I waited to hear the front door open but nothing. No further noise. I walked around the house afterwards but didn't find anything or anyone. Weird.

CaMePlaitPas · 09/09/2021 10:40

Just following on actually the day my family moved out of that second house the ceiling in my old bedroom fell in. We got the impression whoever was there didn't want us to go. We were there 17 years.

My Dad had an experience of being woken up at about 5am one summer morning by someone banging on the front door of his home (he was about 15 at the time), he looked out the window but no one was there, went back to bed and it happened again. The phone rang at 6am to tell his Mum that a cousin had died.

Actually a good friend of mine has this story from a good friend of hers. One room in an old house where she lived was always freezing cold. No matter what heater they put in there or central heating. Discovered an old man who I think was a dentist hung himself in there. My first friend good friend in this para she’s into reiki etc and certain places she won’t visit due to bad energy or she’s stayed one place and it’s haunted.

Oooh I love a good haunted house tale, following.

MissConventionality · 09/09/2021 14:35

Someone I know lived in an old rectory and she insists someone slapped her in the face in the middle of the night after she'd said goodbye to a one night stand. She says she was drifting off to sleep when she got a stinging slap round the face! It was before camera phones were good so she didn't take a photo but said she looked in the mirror and her cheek was definitely red! She told her story in the pub a few weeks later and someone said that their nan told them an old lady used to live there and ran a Sunday school type class for older girls, and that she would smack the ones who she heard had behaved in a loose and flighty manner. Such as stopping too long to talk to a young man outside the chemist, which is what apparently happened to this person's nan!

We lived in a beautiful Victorian terrace when I was a teenager with my mum stepdad and siblings. My brother reported hearing somebody running up and down the stairs every night at 3am - it terrified him so much he slept with headphones on! I was always too scared to verify it.

In the same house, one evening I was home alone. Family were out at the supermarket. I heard my DSD come in, slam the front door and run up the stairs. I shouted hello and thought nothing of it. 10 mins later DSD actually walks in through the front door alongside with my family. I was so so spooked!

Numerous times we'd be stood in the kitchen and we saw a shadowy figure go up the stairs - can you see a theme Grin we all saw and heard things in that house even very sceptical DSD!

My mum reported my sisters cot was often made up on a morning which was freaky. The lady who sold us the house kept in touch and said a medium friend had come round years ago and said there was the presence of a young maid in the house! No wonder she didn't say anything when we were moving in haha! It was never scary as such as we got used to it but to start with it was unsettling.

Chocolatebuttercream · 09/09/2021 14:50

Growing up we lived for a while in a massive old house in Scotland whilst my Dad did a job up there (we are not rich or anything, it was in a particular remote area of Scotland where properties are cheap!!) The previous owner was very woo. I went with my parents to view the house and my teenage older brother was to have the basement floor as his room and study. The vendor told us she used that area as a laundry and she often heard someone calling her name from the ground floor above. My mum asked me not to tell my brother as there was no point freaking him out.

As you can probably guess, my brother would occasionally come upstairs and ask who was calling his name...

In addition the kitchen had a tiled floor and in the night you could clearly hear the chairs being scraped on the floor- I know people will say old houses make noises but it was a very distinctive noise.

There was a kid I went to school with who said his grandmother's house had a poltergeist, but it was just a 1940s prefab semi. Although I guess poltergeists are allegedly attached to people and not property? Or have I got that wrong......

My Dsis lived in an old railway workers house in the middle of a terrace and she used to hear a noise by the front window like someone had walked in through the wall and was knocking snow or dirt off their boots. When I joined a Facebook page for history in our town, there was a very old photograph of the row her house was in. Her bay window wasn't there but the front door was instead!

Have a look on YouTube for the channel Really Haunted. His house is seemingly very active and there are lots of videos to watch.

Lee (the channel/home owner) seems very genuine.

Twenty years ago I was living in my new build alone. I loved that house.
One night I woke up with a start, fully awake, bolt upright in bed with a tremendous feeling of dread.
I caught the end of something travelling slowly across the ceiling. It had passed over my bed and was disappearing through the opposite wall. I was looking up from underneath and it was like looking up at the underside of a flying carpet type of thing so I didn’t get to see anything to describe. The thing that has stuck with me was the noise it made. It was a humming white noise. I was terrified as I just knew what ever it was, was evil. I had to put all lights on in the house for the rest of the night. I never had any further incidents but whenever I recall this I get goose bumps and can clearly remember that noise to this day.

Chocolatebuttercream · 11/09/2021 10:30

Shameless bump! I love things like this. I'll share another in a bit when I have time!

Itsbeen84yearss · 11/09/2021 10:36

Yep we had to move in the end. Never believed before. Then we moved into a three hundred year old property. Running Footsteps on the landing, a child giggling. Then I actually saw a man go into my ds bedroom from the bottom of the stairs in the daytime. Ds was in there napping. I was so convinced it was an intruder I grabbed a glass photo frame thinking I could try to attack the man with it. Got in there and there was nobody there. That was it for me. House went on the market

FuckingFabulous · 11/09/2021 12:50

Funnily enough, I've a relative who works as a cleaner. She's just taken on work in a converted church. I met her for coffee this morning and she told me that while she was cleaning the downstairs bathroom she heard someone come in and call out "Margaret!" She came out to tell the visitor that the family were out and there was nobody there and the door was closed. She asked the husband when he came back who Margaret was and he laughed and said "Did my wife tell you to ask me?" and said she keeps telling him there's a ghost calling out for Margaret and now he's sure she's trying to spook him!

I just went to have a peek and then decided that half eleven at night might not be the best time- will look in the daylight 😂

My DAunt and her DH were househunting and took my cousin, aged 3, with them on a second viewing of a house they really liked. This was in the 70s before the Internet. Cousin cried at the door and refused to go in, very unlike her. Was coaxed in but kept saying 'we can't live here, the little girl doesn't want us'.

They asked the estate agent, who admitted that the young daughter of a previous owner had died in the house.

Bloodyavocadoagain · 12/09/2021 17:38

strangeaddiction. I’ve just had a look at really haunted. It’s hysterical. It looks like every other channel that does this stuff. It’s so OTT and the clickbaity thumbnails and Intro to the videos with demons and whatnot 🤣. Think someone decided to have a bash at a Lancashire version of the Enfield Poltergeist while they were on furlough. It says he was in or ran a ghost hunting group so he will know all the tricks of the trade I imagine .
