How the heck do you clean a toilet brush?!

They are truly gross things

Had a guest this weekend. A lovely considerate one and cleverly not her fault, she had a tummy upset and she has tried to clean the toilet but left the brush in a disgusting state.

I would bin without a second thought but it’s a beautiful toilet brush that perfectly matches my bathroom!

How do you clean?

Although at the moment… I’m thinking just bin it and suck up spending £28 on identical replacement!

I put it in the dishwasher with the dog bowls on a long wash and do an empty long wash after.

purplesequins · 05/09/2021 08:26

I put mind in the dishwasher when I use a descaler on a long hot maintenance wash.

if you don't have a dishwasher, bucket of bleach?

Good heavens. No. Absolutely no no no!

For a start… it’s not leaving the bathroom!

I don't believe you.
AfterSchoolWorry · 05/09/2021 08:28

I would bin it. But I wouldn't spend €28 on a loo brush!

Miniroofbox · 05/09/2021 08:29

I do. Once a week on a Saturday morning. 😁

AllTheCakes · 05/09/2021 08:30

You can buy silicone ones now that are much easier to clean than the bristle ones. Joseph Joseph do them.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/09/2021 08:31

Just put it in the toilet bowl with a load of bleach and leave it for a while

cheeseismydownfall · 05/09/2021 08:32

Get a silicone brush. Traditional brushes are utterly revolting.

We have silicone brushes in all our loos and even when they've been really, er, 'well used' you just rinse it in the water while flushing and its clean, no problem.

3WildOnes · 05/09/2021 08:32

I put mine be in a bucket of hot soapy water and then a bucket of bleach.

LittleBearPad · 05/09/2021 08:32

Bucket of bleachy water?

I don’t think I could put mine in the dishwasher.

If it’s really bad buy a new one

ginandbearit · 05/09/2021 08:32

Put it in the loo bowl and squirt / soak with bleach ad leave for a while ..overnight if poss ..then flush the loo and swish brush around in the water as it flushes..jobbies done !

WeatherwaxLives · 05/09/2021 08:33

I put a big dose of bleach in the loo and leave the brush in overnight. Then in the morning flush the loo while holding the brush unde the running water to rinse it off.

If that doesn't work I'd chuck it and get a new one!

Wannabegreenfingers · 05/09/2021 08:33

Flush it few times in the toilet bowl, then leave in bleach. Do not put in the dishwasher. My toilet brushes are never dirty. When I've cleaned the loo, I always do an extra flush, no issues.

cheeseismydownfall · 05/09/2021 08:33

Also I am the singularly most lax person I know about hygiene and even I think the idea of putting a toilet brush in the dishwasher is unspeakably grim.

MaggieFS · 05/09/2021 08:34

You bin it and buy a basic white one for a couple of pounds. Who cares what it looks like. It's a loo brush not an item to covet it worry about matching. Best kept in a cupboard any way.

Hotelhelp · 05/09/2021 08:34

How can people honestly put them in their dishwasher. I could never be fully confident that all ‘particles’ had been rinsed.

MaggieFS · 05/09/2021 08:34

*or worry about matching

Bagelsandbrie · 05/09/2021 08:36

I never buy expensive ones for this reason. Tesco do a perfectly good one that sits in a proper container for about £3!

That's the type of reply where I have absolutely no idea whether the poster is taking the piss or not. Smile

£3 is expensive for a toilet brush. Ikea sell them for 70 p.
PurBal · 05/09/2021 08:38

Bleach. A lot of bleach.

Marni83 · 05/09/2021 08:39

I really can not grasp putting it in the dishwasher

Unbelievably gross

I’ve binned it and just purchased a silicone one!

Thanks all

Honestly, buying countless cheap brushes and using gallons of bleach is completely unnecessary and wasteful. Get a silicon brush. No need for the expensive Joseph Joseph one, ours were about £8 from Amazon and as far as I can tell will last forever.

People on MN are paranoid about poo.
I would hose it outside, maybe get a bucket with hot soapy water in it. Scrape it with a stick which you then throw away.

I had sheeps poo on my trainer yesterday after a hill walk, scraped off the worst then scrubbed it with a bit of detergent over the utility room sink. Then gave the scrubbing brush a rub under the tap and left it outside to dry and washed my hands well.

There's often dog poo around eg on pavements - are you all throwing away your and the DCs shoes, bleaching the house floor?
