How the heck do you clean a toilet brush?!

They are truly gross things

Had a guest this weekend. A lovely considerate one and cleverly not her fault, she had a tummy upset and she has tried to clean the toilet but left the brush in a disgusting state.

I would bin without a second thought but it’s a beautiful toilet brush that perfectly matches my bathroom!

How do you clean?

Although at the moment… I’m thinking just bin it and suck up spending £28 on identical replacement!

FFS that can't be real.... the dishwasher??? I can't deal GrinGrinEnvyEnvy

BlackberrySky · 05/09/2021 18:39

I would buy a cheap plastic bucket and put it in there with some bleach.

Absolutely retching at the toilet brush in the dishwasher. That is just vile.

I worked with a guy who had worked at Little Chef and he said they put them in the dishwasher there. Needless to say I've never been to a Little Chef and hope to God none of my friends who've fed me at their houses do that.
I have bought replacement brushes that screw onto the end of the handle so I don't have to replace the whole thing.

You have got to be kidding me.

This is beyond disgusting.

@purplesequins

I put mind in the dishwasher when I use a descaler on a long hot maintenance wash.

if you don't have a dishwasher, bucket of bleach?

Please tell me you're joking

Have they had a visit from the health inspectors recently?

If I believed this story, I'd almost tip them off myself. However, I don't believe it.

@AllTheCakes

You can buy silicone ones now that are much easier to clean than the bristle ones. Joseph Joseph do them.
I have one of these. How you get 'matter' out of it though when rinsing alone doesn't do the job?
Gmom · 05/09/2021 19:05

@IcedPurple Funny that you don't believe me. It's true that my colleague told me that. I suppose he could have been making it up but that wasn't really in his character and all the posts on this thread saying "put it in the dishwasher" make me think it must be something that some English people do! Yuck! I just googled "Little Chef" and they've gone out of business.

No, it's not that I don't believe you - I should have specified that.

It's that I think your source was fibbing or at least distorting the truth somewhat.

cheeseismydownfall · 06/09/2021 10:56

thethoughtfox - we have silicon toilet brushes (not JJ) and I have never had any trouble with 'matter' sticking to them? And they've definitely been... put through their paces, shall I say.

Once I have scrubbed and flushed (holding brush under the flush) I then plunge them up and down a bit in the fresh water in the bowl if needed. This always gets them completely clean.

Blueskyrainshowers · 06/09/2021 11:27

I'm sure if a toilet brush is used daily (whether it needs to be or not, so to speak) it effectively gets a really good rinse anyway.
I think it's possible to be a bit too neurotic about germs. Most things, unless they are going to be eaten, are clean enough if they look clean.

LimitIsUp · 06/09/2021 11:39

@Miniroofbox

I put it in the dishwasher with the dog bowls on a long wash and do an empty long wash after.
Fuck no!
