How the heck do you clean a toilet brush?!

They are truly gross things

Had a guest this weekend. A lovely considerate one and cleverly not her fault, she had a tummy upset and she has tried to clean the toilet but left the brush in a disgusting state.

I would bin without a second thought but it’s a beautiful toilet brush that perfectly matches my bathroom!

How do you clean?

Although at the moment… I’m thinking just bin it and suck up spending £28 on identical replacement!

Glug a load of bleach into the toilet bowl and leave it standing in that overnight.

BronzeBalonze · 05/09/2021 10:37

Ps mini once upon a time I had both a horse and a dishwasher, and if memory serves me right I'd put horse bits, stirrups and other bits and pieces in the dishwasher.
Headcollars, saddle cloths and rugs went in the washing machine.
Still here to tell the tale Smile

Aposterhasnoname · 05/09/2021 10:38

Dear god, don’t put it in the dishwasher! I honestly thought the posters that said that were joking.

I don’t use a toilet brush the way your friend does. I use it on a toilet that is fairly visibly clean to give it a good scrub if that makes sense? Not to wipe away poo. So it’s not visibly dirty (I’m sure there are germs!) when it comes out of the loo.

Every time I use mine I either spray it with dettol or a capful of disinfectant type cleaner.

In your case I would put something like toilet duck in your loo and give it a clean with the brush. Surely most of the stuff would come off with a vigorous rub?

VladmirsPoutine · 05/09/2021 10:41

People put their toilet brush in their dish-washers!!! My god! This is exactly why you can't eat in everybody's house and my personal favourite refusing to taste whatever 'homemade' treats people bring to the office. That is the definition of disgusting.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 05/09/2021 10:41

OP I'm so glad you asked this. I've tried cleaning mine but it's not great. Off to buy a silicone one off Amazon as they look loads better Grin

QueenHofScotland · 05/09/2021 10:42

@Aposterhasnoname

Glug a load of bleach into the toilet bowl and leave it standing in that overnight.
Yes this would also work!!
LadyLolaRuben · 05/09/2021 10:42

and how would you remove skid marks after being to the toilet?
IcedPurple · 05/09/2021 11:05

It's been a while since we've had a toilet brush thread on MN!

I bought one with little disposable heads on Amazon. You simply bin the heads after a few uses or whenever they start getting manky, and attach a new one. I would never use one of the 'traditional' types again.

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/09/2021 11:09

on way to check out silicone brushes

VerbenaGirl · 05/09/2021 11:19

I won’t even have toilet brushes in the house, having once been told of a friends toddler caught playing with their toilet brush. I won’t go into the graphic details, but it Still makes me shudder. We seem to manage fine without.

Baggingarea · 05/09/2021 11:20

Sorry haven't RTFT but had to comment because toilet brushes are TRIGGERING to me.

I invested in a silicon one because bristles just gave me the no feeling. Put bleach down at night, scrub any poo stains, flush, bung more bleach down and leave the brush in overnight, flush in the morning, pop back in container.

In the day if there's a poo stain I put bleach on it and hope it goes away next flush.

Brushes are so gross. Someone needs to invent some sort of self cleaning bog.

@CeeceeBloomingdale

Just put it in the toilet bowl with a load of bleach and leave it for a while

@BunnytheFriendlyDragon

Are people joking about putting it in the dishwasher?? Shock
Surely no one would joke about thisGrin
Nitgel · 05/09/2021 11:26

it's poo a natural substance i don't really get all the bleaching the hell out of toilet brushes or buying lots. it's really bad for the environment.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/09/2021 11:28

@MydogWillow

Chuck it and never, ever buy another. Disgusting things.

Replace with Marigolds, bleach and elbow grease.

Now this I don't understand. Get rid of a brush that is specifically for the loo and only ever touches the loo and replace with Marigolds and presumably a cloth which you do what with afterwards?
opinionminion · 05/09/2021 11:32

Throw it out - ghastly things - use toilet paper to mop up after oneself if required.

GammyLeg · 05/09/2021 11:33

I’m more horrified by the waste of water and power running an empty dishwasher every week than by putting the brush in!

Not that I’d do that either…

GammyLeg · 05/09/2021 11:35

Also, I don’t understand why British toilets are designed the way they are - so that you’re constantly scrubbing shit off them.

We lived in a country that favoured the shallow bowl type of toilet - in six years I think I only needed a toilet brush four or five times!

RisingSunn · 05/09/2021 11:39

Dishwasher ?! 🤢

TheHumanSatsuma · 05/09/2021 11:41

@CeeceeBloomingdale

Just put it in the toilet bowl with a load of bleach and leave it for a while
That’s what I always do and flush a couple of times after it’s soaked.
Froppysue · 05/09/2021 11:43

Most toilet brushes you can unscrew the brush part and add a replacement.

I have a silicone one now but I did used to replace our old ones regularly.

I can’t believe people put them in the dishwasher, surely not!!

TheWeatherWitch · 05/09/2021 11:47

Fill the toilet with bleach, shove toilet brush down, let it soak for a while, flush rinse and repeat as often as necessary.

To everyone washing their toilet brush in the dishwasher, you’re vile 😝😵‍💫🤢🤮

garlicandsapphires · 05/09/2021 11:50

I don’t understand those of you who claim to need no brush at all. Scrubbing off poo stains with loo paper?!
