Just wondered if people generally keep it private that they use Mumsnet or not? Never heard any of my friends saying they use it and wondered if it's widely takes about it not really! Just curious to know what people do...

No I don't.
Although I know someone who's on here but she doesn't know I know.
Never been mentioned in convo etc.

PalmarisLongus · 04/09/2021 20:16

I told someone about it when I first.found it but they didn't know what it was and don't use the internet much so they assumed it is like Facebook. Grin

Rainallnight · 04/09/2021 20:17

Oh weird, I had exactly the same thought today! No one I know ever ever admits to it.

SpacePug · 04/09/2021 20:17

It depends on the other person's opinion of MN as to whether I'd admit it or not. I know a woman who refers to it as HunsNet and jokes about it in a negative light so I did not mention that I use it

mrselizabethdarcy · 04/09/2021 20:20

Yes ..I tell people but refuse to tell them my username if asked Grin

TheWayTheLightFalls · 04/09/2021 20:21

Given the user numbers I expect that (in certain demographics especially) every mum is using it. I have admitted (Confused) using MN before but it leads to an awkward reaction - I think people are reluctant to link themselves to it somehow. Maybe the bitchy/sniper-ish reputation on bits of the site? Or the idea you might be outed? Dunno.

PrincessNutella · 04/09/2021 20:22

I do, but I wouldn't admit my user name! I love to talk about interesting threads, though.

gamerchick · 04/09/2021 20:24

Yes. I know people on here and visa versa who know my username and I have no problems in mentioning MN IRL. I don't start threads though.

Haggisfish3 · 04/09/2021 20:26

I do.

neverstophopping · 04/09/2021 20:35

I found out my sister was on here when her very recognisable thread ended up in classics

Soubriquet · 04/09/2021 20:36

Only to people I know aren’t on mn in the first place

WineAcademy · 04/09/2021 20:36

Loads of my friends were radicalised by mumsnet, so yes. 💚🤍💜

SpindleWhorl · 04/09/2021 20:37

Yes.

It's not exactly 4-Chan.

Elieza · 04/09/2021 20:37

I never tell anyone my user name but I’m quite happy to tell them I’m on here.

My male colleague posted something about dc not sleeping and asking for help and he said he was shocked by the venom and bitchyness of some of the answers and it put him right off. And the polar opposite replies!

I do still admit to being a mumsnetter though.

Retrievemysanity · 04/09/2021 20:38

Yes all the time Blush But none of my friends or colleagues are on (or so they say) and they think I’m a bit weird for it.

Bobmonkfish · 04/09/2021 20:39

I do, because most of my topics of conversation are prompted by stuff I have read on here Grin But I only have three friends that I know use it.

JudgeRindersMinder · 04/09/2021 20:41

No, due to a previous horrendous experience with a different forum

GTAlogic · 04/09/2021 20:41

No, it's like some guilty secret. If I mention something I've read on here, I always talk about it as being something I read about on the internet or that a friend was on about.

jugglingduty · 04/09/2021 20:41

A few years ago I mentioned without thinking once, and had my brother-in-law launch into an unexpected rant about transphobia.

He sat there scoffing about this unparalleled online female community - which has supported me through multiple miscarriages, infertility and my husband's depression and suicide attempts - with such vitriol.

It changed my opinion of him, the sanctimonious piece of shit, and still makes me feel absolutely furious when I think about it.

Ironically it has made me more likely to mention and defend Mumsnet in other conversations, and suggest it as a place of support for women.

Shirleyphallus · 04/09/2021 20:42

Absolutely not! It’s my guilty pleasure!

Albgo · 04/09/2021 20:44

Yes, I'm very open about being on here. I often tell friends / family members about interesting or funny things I've seen on here too. I love MN.

Albgo · 04/09/2021 20:46

"Ironically it has made me more likely to mention and defend Mumsnet in other conversations, and suggest it as a place of support for women."

Good for you @jugglingduty

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/09/2021 21:26

Hell yeah! But I am outside the uk so people dont really have much context.
