Downgrade from a king to a double

I see a fair few questions or website posts about upgrading from a double to a long sized bed, but has anyone downgraded? I'm currently lying in the middle of a king-size bed, and so is my partner. We never gravitate towards the edges (although, I wonder if my mattress has anything to do with that).

I think I'd like a bit of extra space in my room as it's not large, it's a small double room really

But I'm worried that going down to a double will be hell. Is it really that noticeable?

Long sized bed Grin

Very noticeable to us. We’ve left holidays early after suffering sleepless nights in a double, if you happily sleep touching it may not be an issue.

We have a double and manage fine. But we're just back from a week away in a kingsize and my goodness can we tell the difference!
But if a double wouldn't affect your sleep (any way you could try that out?a couple of nights away?) then I'd go for the space.
Without trying it out though, not sure if you'd know how it might affect your sleep

We've never had a king-sized, managed perfectly well in a double (until my snoring meant I moved out to a separate room entirely!). I recommend you keep your current king-sized duvet when you downgrade, the extra overhand on the edges makes it really cosy.

MyCousinDaphne · 04/09/2021 08:45

We have a double, we like it, never felt the need to go bigger. And we are not small people!

AmelieLovesAutumn · 04/09/2021 08:47

Why not book a weekend away in a double? That would give you a good idea of how comfortable you'd find it.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/09/2021 08:47

We had to share a double on holiday recently. The size, combined with it being bloody uncomfortable, meant we were exhausted by the end of it.

CattyMcNips · 04/09/2021 08:48

Isn't a double shorter? I would struggle with that.

GemmaRuby · 04/09/2021 08:48

Don’t do it!

grey12 · 04/09/2021 08:49

Maybe go on holiday first Wink

FlowersinJune · 04/09/2021 08:50

Don’t do it. We had to share a double and spent most of the night going:

“get over on your side”. “

“I’m on my side. If I roll over more I would fall off”.

Fubitch · 04/09/2021 08:51

If you sleep in the middle anyway and don't mind touching each other then I don't see the problem in downsizing.

Nobranothanks · 04/09/2021 08:55

All the comments on here about "not minding touching each other" are really making me laugh.

I'm exactly the same - love dp to bits and am happy to be touched any other time but for the love of God don't cuddle up to me in bed 😂😂

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/09/2021 08:59

P is huge and we have a superking.

A few times we've had to sleep in a double for trips or whatever and it was hell.

I can't sleep with someone up against me.

The snoring is bad enough, if he was touching me as well I swear I would smother him in a rage.

Well I can't go to sleep touching him but I wake up in that sickly romantic entanglement but I'm convinced that's just him being needy!

I am one of those DO NOT TOUCH ME as I fall asleep people. My son has a double bed, we might have to hop in it before I change the bed linen tonight and maybe watch TV and see how it feels.

Hmmm I feel like maybe I'll end up regretting it

I think you need to actually sleep in it. Could you swap beds for a few nights?

We did it.

Would not recommend.

I had a king when I lived alone. When dp moved in I agreed (stupidly) to use his bed and gave mine away to friend. I was trying to ensure dp had enough of his stuff about that he felt at home.

We spent much of the 2 years sleeping separately for parts of the night. Or he would come to bed late and I would get up stupidly early.

We just bought another King last week and its bliss. Never, ever going back to a double.

Kitkat151 · 04/09/2021 09:39

Never had a king and been together 35 years....double works fine....I’m 8.5 st and he’s 11.5 st....and neither of us move much in bed

Ethelfromnumber73 · 04/09/2021 09:41

DON'T DO IT

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 04/09/2021 09:53

Somehow my mother has a short 5ft bed ....well, it's shorter than ours... and I cannot sleep in there with dh, he is all up in my space.

I am a notorious bed hogger. As soon as I possibly can I am going to upgrade to as big a bed as will fit into the new bedroom in the house we are moving to.

Mydogisagentleman · 04/09/2021 09:58

We have a super king - get us!
Occasionally we have to sleep in a double. It’s pure hell.
Since you have a double in the house, spend a couple of nights in it. I think I can guarantee you will not be downsizing

Enko · 04/09/2021 10:11

I hated it when we did and very happily upgraded back up to a kingsize a few years later. A good mattress is important though

piglet81 · 04/09/2021 10:14

We have a king and I would never willingly downgrade. Wish I could banish DH to another room and have it all to myself tbh!

BashfulClam · 04/09/2021 10:24

We have just upgraded to a superking and it’s the best investment ever. In a double , he’d roll on my arm, one of us would be so near the edge…no!
