Downgrade from a king to a double

I see a fair few questions or website posts about upgrading from a double to a long sized bed, but has anyone downgraded? I'm currently lying in the middle of a king-size bed, and so is my partner. We never gravitate towards the edges (although, I wonder if my mattress has anything to do with that).

I think I'd like a bit of extra space in my room as it's not large, it's a small double room really

But I'm worried that going down to a double will be hell. Is it really that noticeable?

Don’t do it - it’s very noticeable

We’ve always had a double but would get something bigger when I change it. Our room is very big. We’re okay with the double though but we are small people, I’m 4ft11” and dh is 5ft 2”.

I done this last year. I am so glad I kept my king size bed as I ended up giving the double to my daughter and building my king-size back up after a couple of months. I hated it.

I have the box room and my bed takes up the full room I can open the door and nothing else. There's a set of drawers for the TV to open but they are empty as there isn't enough room for them to openGrin. So thats why I tried the double so i could have a bit more space but I decided less space was worth it.

*TV to sit on

I thought we were fine in a double but we needed a new bed and our kids often sneak in in the night and our bedroom is big so we went for a king size. It’s soooooo much better. I’d never go back now.

Two people in a double bed have proportionally less room than a baby in a cot.

But I have a double bed, and sleep fine with dp in it. It helps that we are both deep sleepers though, so don't wake each other up when we move. And that we also like to be warm in bed and usually fall asleep touching even in a larger bed. (Not entangled, but he will have his hand on my thigh and my hand is often on his shoulder)

Seasidemumma77 · 04/09/2021 11:08

I have a king size, dp has a double in his home. We can sleep in either, but for us we agree on a hot summer night my king size wins hands down.

MrsKDB · 04/09/2021 11:10

We have an emperor 🤣 a double is for one person imo. Don’t do it!!!

Bordois · 04/09/2021 11:14

Super king and separate duvets did wonders for our marriage 🤣

Daisy829 · 04/09/2021 11:19

We have a king. There’s no way I would downgrade to a double. Our next bed is going to be a super king!

DappledThings · 04/09/2021 11:22

Only ever had a double and we are not small people. Have plenty of space with no touching in the night.

mizu · 04/09/2021 11:23

Um, no.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/09/2021 11:59

Whereas we are both tall and can't get away from each other in a double and certainly didn't have any, let alone 'plenty of' space!

I suppose sleeping positions come into it somewhat, being generous!

FrenchFancie · 04/09/2021 12:00

I would kill to have a king sized bed - we have a double and it does my head in, there’s no where to escape to when OH does the starfish thing - but our bedroom is small and oddly sized and if we put a king size bed in every other bit of furniture would have to come out….

starfishmummy · 04/09/2021 12:05

We have a king at home. I'm large, dh is tall and we are both "spreaders" even though he always maintains that he sleeps on one side and doesn't turn over or move...not true!! Our favourite holiday cottage (for location) has a double, we manage but two weeks is enough!!

Housewife2010 · 04/09/2021 12:18

We have a superking which we love. The only downside to having a superking is if we stay somewhere with a double, after being used to all the space, our sleep really suffers. After moving home and having a smaller bedroom, a double would probably look better, but I would never change it.

Mamamamasaurus · 04/09/2021 12:28

I'm a superking-er and fucking love it. We upgraded from a king. I like to be all tucked in and cosy, DH is a duvet flinger.

We went away last year and slept in a KS and it was hell. All up in my space he was.
Balls to that

TiddleTaddleTat · 04/09/2021 12:30

Yeah it's the downgrading that's the issue, not the size of the double itself. We have a super king size bed that takes up almost all of the bedroom but whenever we share a double on holiday, find it incredibly uncomfortable and don't sleep well at all! I don't think I'd get used to it easily now.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 04/09/2021 12:32

Don’t do it!

ZednotZee · 04/09/2021 12:32

We have a double. We like sleeping close to each other.

Never had a bigger bed, just keep buying doubles and our room is huge, it has a seating area

NotMyCat · 04/09/2021 12:57

Don't do it
I have a super king to myself and am grumpy if I have to share it Grin

thisplaceisapigsty · 04/09/2021 13:02

In our last house there was barely room to fit the king size bed in the room and it was very inconvenient but we both agreed there is no way we could downsize. DH is very hot in bed (literally speaking!) and I can't stand his boiling hot limbs touching me when I'm trying to sleep, not to mention the hogging of space generally. When we book a holiday cottage now I try never to book one that has a normal double as I know I'll end up in a child's bunk bed or on the sofa for the week.
