Would a hotel give me a discount?

I experienced some sickness this summer and my GP referred me to the hospital for a procedure. There's a waiting list and I have now idea when I will be given an appointment. I'm thinking maybe after Christmas. Im not in the UK by the way. I'm a public patient and I don't have any health insurance.

The procedure my GP referred me for is a colonoscopy. I never had one done. I read up online about it. I'm not nervous about the procedure itself but the day before the procedure, you have to fast except for clear liquids and also you have to take laxatives to clear out your insides. It's called prep online. I'm not looking forward to the prep but I am looking forward to getting cleaned out. I think there might be a night feeling being lighter.

Anyways I have no peace and privacy at home. I'm thinking about for when I'm called for the procedure, I'm thinking about booking 2 nights in a hotel in the city. It would be close to the hospital. I could pack a luggage bag with bottles of water and the laxatives and some of my own towels and baby wipes and an overnight bag and other supplies. I think it might make the process easier. I don't have any dates but rooms are usually expensive. Later on down the line when I get the details for the procedure, if I was to call into a hotel in the city and explain my situation, would they give me a discount? Would it be cheeky of me to ask for a discount? I would like 2 nights two one for the prep evening and the day after for after the hospital procedure.

Does anyone here work at front dest for a hotel? Would you give a discount under special circumstances.

Wtf?

Mariell · 03/09/2021 20:23

Your circumstances are not special. Sorry you don’t want to hear that but the hotels are running a business not a charity and quite frankly you will be embarrassing yourself to ask for on those grounds!!

You can however negotiate a general discount by simply asking if they can do a better price without giving any personal details of any health concerns.

In fact you would most likely be decline full stop if they thing you may have an ‘accident’ in one of those rooms after revealing your intentions to clear your bowels out.

Howsyourfather · 03/09/2021 20:23

Why on Earth would they give you a discount?!

Hi OP, I can't comment on the discount (I suspect you won't get one) but wanted to say from experience of colonoscopies, I don't think you will need two nights in a hotel. The day before you won't go to the loo as much as you think as you are fasting, and after the procedure you may be a bit sore but can pretty much carry on as normal. Hope it all goes well.

Tiredforfive45 · 03/09/2021 20:24

Why would they?

These aren’t special circumstances, they are just the reason you would like to stay in a hotel rather than at home!

ChessieFL · 03/09/2021 20:24

I suppose it’s worth a try at an independent hotel. However, from the hotel’s point of view, why should they? They can let the room at full price near Christmas. They won’t make any money on additional meals/drinks from you, and it’s unlikely you will be a returning customer. So what’s in it for them?

Libertynan · 03/09/2021 20:24

No

NotAnotherBloodyNameChange · 03/09/2021 20:25

I’ve had the prep.
I’d rather have been using my own bathroom than a strange hotel one, even with family members asking how long I’d be. It’s fine, honestly. You don’t need the baby wipes -which aren’t flushable btw & I’m not sure housekeeping would thank you for putting used wipes in the bin.
I don’t see that they would give you a discount tbh. I spent years working in hotels and we wouldn’t have discounted for someone booking a room for two /three nights.

BigWhooper · 03/09/2021 20:26

Would I give you a discount to shit in a hotel bathroom?

No. No, I would not.

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 03/09/2021 20:26

I agree you won't need two nights, after procedure you should feel fine as normal but in my experience you definitely WILL be on the toilet A LOT the day before procedure. I have taken bowel prep twice and literally didn't get off the loo for 4/5 hours. But sorry I don't think you'd get a discount and I don't know how you'd even start that conversation x

ANameChangeAgain · 03/09/2021 20:26

I could pack a luggage bag with bottles of water and the laxatives and some of my own towels and baby wipes if you tell them this they'll charge you more!!

caughtinanet · 03/09/2021 20:26

Just a wild suggestion but why don't you ring the hotel in question and ask them. It's Friday night here and crystal balls might be a bit tired after a busy week

thinkfast · 03/09/2021 20:27

Why on earth would a hotel give you a discount for this? A room's a room. People stay in hotels for all sorts of reasons.

Mariell · 03/09/2021 20:27

Ring ring!

Receptionist - “Hello, Fairytale Hotel, how may I help you?”

OP - “I have a colonoscopy on the 17th so need to book a nearby hotel room as I want to have a good clear out of my bowels and wonder if you would be so kind as to give a me a discount on the room, please?”

Receptionist - sound of dry heaving.

Line goes dead.

Ughmaybenot · 03/09/2021 20:28

I’m honestly so confused as to why on earth you think you’d get a discount for this?! Confused

BigWhooper · 03/09/2021 20:30

"Well I wouldn't need the bed because I'd be on the bog all night."

"Ok so we can rent the bed to a Moldovan businesswoman and just charge you a fiver for the loo and paper."

"Great!"

Seafog · 03/09/2021 20:32

How are these special circumstances?

EileenGC · 03/09/2021 20:32

It’s not special circumstances.

When I travel for work I don’t get reimbursed for hotel costs, it comes out of my pay. I’m in a ‘special circumstance’ in that I’m 1000s of miles away from my own bed, so should I ask for a discount too?

As you see, it makes no sense.

Go on booking.com and find a cheap hotel at £40 per night or whatever. If it’s not a possibility financially, then stay at home. I’ve worked front of house (albeit not at a hotel) and I didn’t ever entertain all the ‘special circumstances’ people used to come up with.

StarryStarrySocks · 03/09/2021 20:34

Don't even bother asking for a discount. Just set up a crowdfunder to cover hotel costs. Grin

Mariell · 03/09/2021 20:35

Op rings back.

Ring ring!

Receptionist - “Hello, Fairytale Hotel, how may I help you?”

OP - we got cut off. I’ll be bringing extra bog roll and a can of air freshener....”

Receptionist interrupts the OP - “Please stop calling ....”

Line goes dead.

Hotel receptionist receives another phone call -

Ring Ring!

Receptionist - “WE DO NOT WANT YOU AND YOUR BOTTOM HOLE STAYING AT OUR HOTEL...!

Caller - “this is your manager Joyce and you’re fired.....”

KateTheEighth · 03/09/2021 20:35

Take your own loo roll though

Hotel loo roll can be v rough and scratchy round your bum hole if you have the shits

Apparently

Larryyourwaiter · 03/09/2021 20:35

I cannot stop laughing. Sorry.

I can understand you want privacy but the rest….

Shapesorted · 03/09/2021 20:36

Why is there so much additional and unnecessary information in your post? Envy

TweedePrik · 03/09/2021 20:37

Um no

takeawaycoffee · 03/09/2021 20:39

No they wouldn't just give you discount, but check with the hospital, as they may have a partnership with the hotel, and have an agreed discount in place. The hotels I have worked in have an agreed rate with local hospitals, mainly private ones, for accommodation.
