Which musical to go to?

I absolutely love a musical and over the past few years since the kids are a bit older we’ve been to a few until Covid put a stop to all that. Now everything is starting up again my partner has suggested that we book something for half term.

I’ve been looking online and I cannot make my mind up at all. We’ve already been to my top 3 choices - Les Mis, Wicked and Hamilton and I have tickets booked to see Six in a couple of months with the girls when the tour comes to us. Can anyone recommend one they particularly enjoyed?

Book of Mormon?

Matilda
Kinky Boots
School of Rock
Come from away
Lion King
Mary Poppins

Come from Away was great.

Wicked, hamilton, les mis and six were going to be my recommendations!
The new Cinderella is meant to be good.

Pretty women and Joseph were both awesome but pretty women was better I felt

clare8allthepies · 02/09/2021 22:41

I was thinking about come from away but wasn’t sure if I would spend the whole thing blubbing! I did think my partner would enjoy Book of Mormon too as it’s supposed to be pretty funny

I’m taking my girls to Mary Poppins next year. Singin’ in the Rain is about to open I think - that’s one of the all-time best, a true classic.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 02/09/2021 22:59

Amelie was absolutely amazing.

allofthecheese · 02/09/2021 23:00

Lion king was my favourite

Chosennone · 02/09/2021 23:02

I've seen a lot of Musicals and still think Matilda ticks lots of boxes. Its quirky and funny with an
amazing score. School of Rock is good but not amazing. We loved Everybodys Talking About Jamie.

Elzbells · 02/09/2021 23:05

I loved Hairspray. I wasn't expecting much at all, given that it was the only musical that had tickets during Kids Week but Michael Ball and Les Dennis had an excellent rapport and it was my favourite by far!

NuffSaidSam · 02/09/2021 23:05

Come From Away
Matilda
Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Book of Mormon is great, but not suitable for children, not even young teenagers imo.

Or for something a little bit different Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is great.

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 02/09/2021 23:07

I agree with PP - I've seen several musicals and Matilda is still one of my favourites. Also saw Everybody's Talking about Jamie recently and absolutely loved it - but v different & more contemporary than Les Mis.

MirandaWest · 02/09/2021 23:08

Matilda is great
Saw Come from Away last month and that was wonderful too

StarryStarrySocks · 02/09/2021 23:10

Another vote for Come From Away. I don't know if Waitress is still on, bit that was really good too.

BoattoBolivia · 02/09/2021 23:11

How old? I would maintain that Matilda is the BEST musical ever on stage, and I have seen a fair few. We just saw Cinderella (kids 11&19) and we all loved it. A little more 'sexy' than Matilda, but very well done and a great twist in the story.

Princesspond · 02/09/2021 23:13

I genuinely thought Come from Away was the most feel good uplifting musicals I’ve seen. (But I didn’t take the kids)

OhGingleBells · 02/09/2021 23:15

Not sure when half term is but if Anything Goes is still on then that is absolutely phenomenal! I challenge anyone not to come out of it singing and with toes tapping!

If not, Mary Poppins is excellent. Surprised at how much I enjoyed it as an adult.

Based on your list, Phantom should be up there as a next choice! Anyone who likes musicals (even anyone who doesn’t Grin ) should be able to say that they’ve seen it and offer an opinion. The music isn’t for everyone but the overall spectacle and story is incomparable.

Have fun and let us know what you choose!!

DellaPorter · 02/09/2021 23:16

Mamma Mia or Matilda

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 02/09/2021 23:16

Back to the Future was incredible.

Hairspray is the best musical I've ever seen live.

BoopBoopBastian · 02/09/2021 23:19

Dear Evan Hansen is on my next to see list

dunkaccino · 02/09/2021 23:21

Priscilla Queen of the Desert - all musicals are fairly camp & cheesy and this really is the ultimate in gloriously cheesy campness, truly magnificent!

clare8allthepies · 02/09/2021 23:27

Sorry I wasn’t very clear, it would just be me and my partner, needing to wait for half term is so that we can take them to my mum for babysitting help. That rules out Matilda as the girls do want to see it. Also out is Book of Mormon as it’s not on until mid November and also Chicago which I fancied but is also touring.

I would love to see everybody’s talking about Jamie but I don’t think my DP would be as keen. At the moment I think come from away is in the lead

I really enjoyed the phantom of the opera and wicked.
Going to see pretty woman in October, can’t wait!

TeamNegan · 02/09/2021 23:31

Wicked is brilliant, I’ve seen it more times than I care to admit and it never gets old for me!
