Which musical to go to?

I absolutely love a musical and over the past few years since the kids are a bit older we’ve been to a few until Covid put a stop to all that. Now everything is starting up again my partner has suggested that we book something for half term.

I’ve been looking online and I cannot make my mind up at all. We’ve already been to my top 3 choices - Les Mis, Wicked and Hamilton and I have tickets booked to see Six in a couple of months with the girls when the tour comes to us. Can anyone recommend one they particularly enjoyed?

I'm not usually keen on jukebox musicals but we really enjoyed &Juliet when we saw it just before lockdown. Some great set pieces with songs you didn't know you knew reimagined for musical theatre. Good messaging for you girls too - you don't need a Prince Charming, do your own thing...

Also loving Heathers the musical but it's only on a limited tin in London right now so will
probably have closed by the time you want to go. Not suitable for younger ones, great for older teens though!

I absolutely loved the phantom of the opera, honestly worth the watch! Sat front seat too so blew my mind and was worth every penny and more Grin

Also kinky boots! Amazing 😍

I really enjoyed Chicago.
And Mary Poppins was breathtaking.

This is no help to you at all OP but if you ever get the chance go and see Angela's Ashes the musical. It's one of the best musicals I've ever seen and deserves to be massive.

Mormont · 03/09/2021 00:16

Phantom of the Opera is spectacular.

@BoopBoopBastian

Dear Evan Hansen is on my next to see list
Mines too & Six

Wicked is brilliant! I took 7yr old niece and DH .. we all loved it!

As are Matilda and Book of Mormon (Book of Mormon is hilarious but not for the easily offended or Pearl clutches!) but you've ruled them out for valid reasons.. but def go see them another time!

Saladcreamormayo · 03/09/2021 00:34

Book of Mormon is excellent.

MrsFezziwig · 03/09/2021 00:38

Come From Away. Yes, it concerns a poignant subject but as PP said it is uplifting rather than weepy. When I went they had a display in the foyer detailing the background to it which I found very interesting.

DoneAdulting · 03/09/2021 00:39

Jersey Boys, can't believe no ones suggested it yet

Rebeccasmoonnecklace · 03/09/2021 00:43

Some fantastic ones already mentioned. Blood Brothers is a good one too.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/09/2021 05:38

Is waitress still on? Thats good and quite funny and quite adult.

sub453 · 03/09/2021 06:25

I think I've now seen Les Mis 5 times (over a long period in my defence). Going against the grain but my husband and I found Matilda a bit boring though the kids liked it. I really enjoyed Miss Saigon but I think that only came back for a limited fun. In which case, my vote is for The Lion King as I love the music.

sub453 · 03/09/2021 06:26

Limited run not fun. Though distinctly more x rather than the original version, I shall never look at table tennis balls the same way.

sub453 · 03/09/2021 06:27

Aargh x rated. Need to stop typing half awake!

ToastT · 03/09/2021 06:29

Hairspray with Michael Ball is unmissable. Absolutely fantastic, joyous, incredible!

emlouwat · 03/09/2021 06:43

Waitress is brilliant

theliverpoolone · 03/09/2021 06:52

Another vote for Hairspray. Absolutely brilliant, although you'd need to go before half term as I think it finishes at the end of September.

TheCarrs · 03/09/2021 11:16

@NuffSaidSam

Come From Away Matilda Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Book of Mormon is great, but not suitable for children, not even young teenagers imo.

Or for something a little bit different Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is great.

@NuffSaidSam I recommended Book of Mormon as I read it that they were going as a couple not a family.

I did take my kids when they were mid teens though.

clare8allthepies · 05/09/2021 00:19

You were supposed to help by all recommending the same one not adding loads of other ones in I hadn’t considered yet! 😡🤣

Current front runners are come from away, phantom and hairspray

Blood Brothers!! Take your tissues.

ShitShop · 05/09/2021 00:29

I’m seeing waitress for the second time next month. The music was written by Sarah Bareilles who I love.

Once was my all time favourite but I don’t think that’s on at the moment. Going to see Dear Evan Hansen too, so glad that’s been mentioned a few times!

Whatever you choose, have a great time!

NeedWineNow · 05/09/2021 00:42

We saw Hairspray this week which was absolutely fabulous. Led Dennis and Michael Ball are now my new favourite double act!

We've just got home from seeing Anything Goes which is also good (but not as good as Hairspray IMO).

Next on my list to book are Six, Moulin Rouge and Frozen. I also quite fancy Cabaret with Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley.

YourFinestPantaloons · 05/09/2021 00:49

Come From Away is absolutely wonderful

Newnormal99 · 05/09/2021 00:56

@clare8allthepies

Sorry I wasn’t very clear, it would just be me and my partner, needing to wait for half term is so that we can take them to my mum for babysitting help. That rules out Matilda as the girls do want to see it. Also out is Book of Mormon as it’s not on until mid November and also Chicago which I fancied but is also touring.

I would love to see everybody’s talking about Jamie but I don’t think my DP would be as keen. At the moment I think come from away is in the lead

Hairspray is a limited run I think ending before half term. Jamie is also closing for a year or so in September. I have seen some good reviews on new Frozen musical but they may be quite booked up as it was delayed and rescheduled so many times.

Also seen good reviews on back to the future.
