Why is everyone smoking weed now?

I mean it's everywhere. My neighbour smokes it and stinks the block out with it. In addition I smell it very often just round and about, coming from people's gardens and in pubs and that.

I don't like it because I had a massive anxiety attack first and only time I smoked weed and it left me with PTSD, I mean it was severe. According to my therapist this is actually quite common. I mean therapists know that weed is nasty stuff that makes people feel bad, quite a lot of the time.

But still people are smoking it. And cops are turning a blind eye obviously.

I wish it was legalised really so that these stinky people would have to fit fans and vents and the like.

But until that happens loads of people are at it even though it makes them be boring cunts. Why!

I have noticed people are just willy nilly smoking it as they walk the streets like a cigarette

WorraLiberty · 29/08/2021 00:44

Why do people drink alcohol?

How ever many reasons you can think of, they'll be the same for those who smoke weed I expect.

I know so many people now who smoke it (as you say, it's very common), and they're not all boring cunts. I mean yeah some are, but that's got nowt to do with their week smoking really Grin

The only problem I have with it is the smell. It fucking stinks.

SpindleWhorl · 29/08/2021 00:44

I've noticed this too. Really commonplace.

QueefofSheena · 29/08/2021 00:44

YANBU, it seems to be stinkier than ever too. People who smoke it don’t seem to realise they reek of that revolting ‘old sock stinky feet’ smell for ages after too.

WorraLiberty · 29/08/2021 00:44

*Weed smoking

WorraLiberty · 29/08/2021 00:46

Also, is it just me or has anyone else smelled a certain type of weed lately that smell like foxes piss? Confused

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 00:47

Yes exactly so. It's like they don't give a shit.

I find that quite intimidating. Also just generally depressing: if you're stoned at 10 o'clock in the morning you're not going to work, achieve, do anything etc. Those little smoke spires signal your intention towards your community for the rest of the day and it's not a good one.

It’s miserable if you live next door to a chronic cannabis smoker. I’ve got no issue and think it should be legalised really but as you say then maybe ventilation might be better. We used to live next door to a couple of skunkheads and in the summer they’d smoke in their conservatory and
It would seep into our kitchen. Smells awful.

whatswithtodaytoday · 29/08/2021 00:49

It does seem to smell really strong nowadays. I used to hang out with people who smoked it and you might get a whiff, but never that horrible sweet, cloying smell.

I think partly because it's completely ignored by the police, and partly because we've all just lived through (are still living through) a very stressful time, and weed helps people cope? Plus alcohol really isn't fashionable anymore, for youngsters.

Nat6999 · 29/08/2021 00:50

The communal area of the flats I live in stinks of it, if the wind is in the wrong direction it blows under my front door.

See the thing is, a lot of people I know who smoke it don't really get 'stoned'.

They smoke small ones the size of a normal roll-up and appear pretty normal after. So I'm guessing it's like someone having just one glass of wine/pint of beer.

It probably just gives them a good feeling, compared to those who smoke huge spliffs and pass them around?

Plumtree391 · 29/08/2021 00:52

I've haven't noticed it. My neighbours don't (I would smell it out in the garden), used to smell it occasionally when our children were young but they're all teetering on middle age now and have their own homes.

I've never heard of anyone having an anxiety attack on first smoke. It must have a been strong joint, best to start off gently. At my first time I was sick, which is apparently the sign of an amateur, and didn't try it again for years.

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 00:52

Yes really my neighbour is causing me problems with the smell. I can't really report it because no one gives a shit that there's a loser spending all his waking hours stoned but fuck me my hallway and bedroom smell of weed and it's not nice.

I think this ^^ is a big part of it, yes.

Multiple pubs have closed down everywhere since long before the pandemic and the price of alcohol is far greater than say a £10 bag of weed, that'll last for possibly a few days.

IceLace100 · 29/08/2021 00:54

People want to smoke it because humans like to escape and relax with substances the world over. Yes, there are some who don't at all. But most people will want to use substances at some point (including alcohol). You might not like it or want to do it yourself, but it's a very common feature of human behaviour. So if you're asking why do people smoke weed, well, it's the same reason granny has 3 sherries too many at Xmas. It's not a hard concept to understand.

Weed is illegal, but is it really doing you any harm? Maybe speak nicely to your neighbours about the smell, I am sure most people would compromise if asked politely.

Obv the police don't give a fuck, they have bigger fish to fry. If you want them to police things like individual cannabis use then vote for a party who actually funds the police next time.

Do they own or rent?

If they rent, can you speak to the landlord if speaking to them proves fruitless?

SecondCityShark · 29/08/2021 00:56

It's horrible, I hate the smell. Somebody I know is convinced that the smell is lovely and they always try to get me to sniff their latest purchase in the same way that you might get somebody to smell an amazing sauce you're cooking up or something.

He full-on cannot believe that I find it repulsive.

I sort of wonder if its a bit like the coriander thing - where some peoples' taste buds make it taste nice, but other peoples' taste buds make it taste revolting?

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 00:56

Well that's all very nice and tidy.

My experience fucked my life up for years, literally 10 years on antipsychotics and in and out of hospital, which isn't fun, but you fucking crack on and tell me I've got it wrong if you want to make some petty fucking point about how much fun you are.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 29/08/2021 00:57

Honestly, I think if someone could invent something to mix with the weed that cancels out the smell, no-one would worry about it.

That's absolutely awful for you OP Thanks

But I really don't think it's a common reaction at all thankfully.

SecondCityShark · 29/08/2021 00:59

But yeah, my area is full of hippy types so it's very common. I think it's becoming more socially acceptable than booze.

It's sort of class based actually. The middle class hippies smoke weed, the working class locals drink alcohol.

SecondCityShark · 29/08/2021 01:00

Very true @WorraLiberty

If it wasn't for the smell, I wouldn't care about it.

I couldn't disagree more to be honest.

I live in a very poor London borough and weed is definitely the most common choice over alcohol, as it's much cheaper and as a PP said, alcohol isn't really that popular with youngsters anymore. Well nowhere near as much as years gone by.

Thetepidstepper · 29/08/2021 01:02

Thanks. The therapist who finally got me out of the fucking morass I was in said it's hellish common and he'd seen it loads. Maybe he was just trying to make me feel better but I dunno. It is a psychotropic substance. And certainly my stinky weed neighbour hasn't been out of his flat in the time I've been here so I guess he's not doing so much with himself.

I guess to compare it to alcohol again, you do get some people who have awful reactions to that too Thanks

But regarding your neighbour, have you spoken to them about it?
