Does anyone have a separate letter box on their house?

We need a new front door and the design we really really like can't have a letter box in (long glass panel in the way).

We could just pick a different door or we could have a separate box for post next to the front door.

Has anyone got one? Is it a hassle if you go away and it fills up?

We have a separate one never had an issue with it being filled up (maybe we are not that popular 🤣). The only thing I would mention is look for a secure flap one I can put my hand in ours and fish the post out so if I can do it stands to reason others can.

Lordamighty · 28/08/2021 20:51

We have a separate post box. Ours is from Brabantia.

We have ours quite high up for that reason. I can't reach the letters through the flap, and neither can anyone else if they're small items at the bottom of the box, but tall family members can fish out larger items without using the key.

I had one in the past. Handy for collecting rain and spiders.

brewstoo · 28/08/2021 20:59

I've just been looking at them as our new door won't have a letter box either.

passionfruitpizza · 28/08/2021 21:00

We have one. We chose a door without a letterbox so it didn't lose heat through the opening. We went for bigger one so you can get reasonable sized parcels in it as well as letters. Very happy with jt.

AntiHop · 28/08/2021 21:02

Don't do this. I know someone who did this and her post was stolen for identity theft, leading to loans and credit cards taken out in her name.

shuyajty · 28/08/2021 21:02

We have one to stop the dog going crazy at the post. Never had a problem with it.

Barwell76 · 28/08/2021 21:03

We have one it was already in place when we moved in. Our house is quite cold so i am glad we don't have even more drafts (sp?) coming in. It has never filled up when we are away. I prefer having one.

Cameleongirl · 28/08/2021 21:06

It’s normal when I live in the US, everyone has them. If we’re away for a couple of days, we ask a neighbor to collect the post and we do the same for them. If we’re away for more than a week, we have delivery stopped for the duration and pick everything up at the Post Office when we return. I’m sure there’s something similar in the UK.

cosmopolitanplease · 28/08/2021 21:09

Yes we have one as a pp says to stop the dog going mad at the postie (he still does)

Driftingblue · 28/08/2021 21:09

Different country where mail slots are rare and letter boxes are normal. You can buy ones that lock to prevent mail theft. I preferred that to a mail flap. It just felt odd when someone could put something into my house.

At the moment we have neither because our current area has centralized locked mail boxes for each street.

Ooooh mixed reviews - thanks for the pointers. Still no idea what to go for!

Our letterbox is basically a hole through the wall next to the door, rather than through the door itself.

We had one when we moved into our house. I think the previous owners had put it in to stop their dog chewing their post. We got rid of it as it was at the end of the front path which was a pain in Winter or if it was raining heavily. It would have been fine if it had been by the front door.

troppibambini6 · 28/08/2021 21:31

We have one built into our gate posts. It's a decent size one they only thing is the snails seem to like it and crawl in and eat the post!

CherryMaple · 28/08/2021 21:40

Yes we have one - new fancy front door wouldn’t take a letterbox. We love it. The front is lockable. It’s tall. No one could put their arm in and get the post out - there’s a chute you drop the letters and parcels into, and you can’t put your arm inside. It will take parcels as big as a shoe box. The postman says he wishes everybody had one Grin

CaptainCarp · 28/08/2021 21:41

We have one. Just make sure it's decent enough size across that a small amazon type can fit in.

I have small hands & can't get my hands in to reach the post.
My old house the post wasn't even kept in a locked postbox though... Basically a box on the doorstep so this one feels way more secure lol

ATowelAndAPotato · 28/08/2021 21:43

@CherryMaple ooh that sounds fancy! Can I ask where you got that please?

rubbletrouble · 28/08/2021 21:48

We have one as the door I liked didn't have a letterbox.

I can't say I think much about it, it's functional and secure and I have the door I wanted, winner winner.

CorpusCallosum · 28/08/2021 21:51

Can your door just have a letterbox near the bottom under the glass panel?

BonnyandPoppy · 28/08/2021 21:53

We have one on the house wall under the porch roof. It’s quite large and no one can get their hand in and steal our post. Small parcels fit in too.

DahliaMacNamara · 28/08/2021 21:55

This does worry me slightly. However, the only time I've had my post stolen was direct from the postman's trolley.
CherryMaple · 28/08/2021 21:57

@ATowelAndAPotato We’ve got this:
